Leatherface's Backstory Explained
Ойын-сауық
Like so many horror franchises, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre started out as a modest, low-budget film with a mysterious killer, but it quickly turned into a series with complicated backstories and contradictory timelines. Leatherface is the iconic killer in the Texas Chainsaw franchise, and multiple films have attempted to explain his backstory.
One is the 2006 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, which is a direct prequel to the 2003 remake, while the other is 2017’s Leatherface, which works as a prequel to the original 1974 film. Let’s take a look at the various explanations of Leatherface’s creepy backstory.

Do you think any of the sequels/prequels can hang with the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre?
@elitehuntersden6562

Absolutely, the original film depicted something unique but I think there's a different twist of the Texas Chainsaw in all of them, including Leatherface's new take in 2017.

The 2017 Leatherface that you spent so much time on is pretty much hated, disregarded and ignored by the horror community because it was such an insult to the character and franchise. It did the same for Leatherface as Rob Zombie's Halloween did for Michael Myers. He quit being scary once you gave a reason why they were the way they are. Once you gave them the A typical serial killer childhood. I.e. abusive family, teased at school, etc.

@@kraigowaffles2110 it'd be played out to not a t least be original, that's what they're doing. If they were to replicate, we'd blame them for not being original. Dude, they listen to us in every direction through so many interations in different series and franchises though.
So in short: Leatherface was always the victim. He acts the way he does because of his family's constant pressure over him to be just like them. I think deep down, he does have remorse over the people he murders but he's too afraid to revolt against his family.

I personally like 2003 Leatherface. It shows how far Thomas’ family have really burrowed into his head. You can tell by the way he chases and kills people that he just came to a realisation that this is his life and this is how it will always be so he gave up on trying to keep from killing. Now he just does it because there really is no point anymore.

What I found interesting is that originally, the family's name isn't revealed. Even in the credits, they're just "the hitchhiker", "the cook" and so on. Only in the second movie were they named - in a script not written by Tobe Hooper. I personally prefer the version without names, as it is more basic and somewhat mysterious.

While Gunner Hansen’s Leatherface portray as the guard dog/killer for the Sawyer, Andrew Bryniarski‘s take on Thomas Hewitt portray as more of a victim-turn-predatory. The 2003 reboot and it’s prequel has given some interesting on the most iconic horror villains we have today!

I like the remakes a lot, but i understand as Thomas Hewitt being a kinda of Jason-like Leatherface, very different from Hansen's Leatherface
Hooper was far more inspired by seeing a rack of chainsaws while holiday shopping and realizing how he could get through the crowd more quickly, than he was by Ed Gein.
The chainsaw dance at the end is classic and scary as any blood n guts torture. You don't need to show 50 gallons of blood or 20 heads... its about the story and acting.

Ive heard that the dance wasnt even in the script, it was just Gunnar celebrating the end of an extremely difficult to get through movie. And at the end he even threw the chainsaw at the recording team, but no one was hurt. Dont quote me on that though as i cant confirm it. Just a story i heard once. Though i do think it was the best scene in the film, really did a great job at showing how detached Leatherface is mentally when he just forgets about the woman entirely and starts dancing

I think the best work was done on the 2003 movie, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. I mean, this movie had it all, don’t get me wrong, it definitely brought its dumb moments to the table. Such as, the girls not taking advantage, of being left alone, and staying put, instead of running. And many other things, but it all makes sense. In the 2006 prequel, the Hewitt family was pretty much "normal" the only exception being Charlie "Hoyt" Hewitt. As the story goes he was a Korean War veteran having fought in that conflict and be taken prisoner by the North Koreans along with his unit in 1952. The North Koreans brought them to a brutal POW camp during the dead of winter and starved everyone. The winter was so bad that rations were extremely scarce or non existent that one by one the people in his unit began dying of starvation along with the North Koreans as well. He was desperate to eat something that he had no choice but to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. He ate everyone that died and it was during that moment that he was eating them that he came to like the taste of human flesh. Fast foward to the events of July 1969 and Leatherface lost his job at the slaughterhouse due to the plant being condemned and shut down by the Texas health department. When this occurred everyone in the Hewitt's hometown packed up and left leaving them as the only remaining inhabitants of the town. Consequently what ended up happening was that once the slaughterhouse was shut down they not only lost their jobs but more importantly they just lost their only source of food. Hence the reason why you heard Charlie Hewitt mention in the 2006 film at the dinner table with the family saying quote "that slaughterhouse been more to this town than them fools will ever know". So yeah that's what led them to begin their path of death and cannibalism. It all started with Charlie Hewitt. He was soley responsible for the events that took place between 1969 and 1973 in both the 2003 and 2006 films. Truly horrifying.
The origin of his name: L'eatHerFace = Let's Eat Her Face

That one scene in the original (still by far the best) where Leatherface is shown fretful, nervous, and unsure what to do in anticipation of his family coming home and seeing what he'd done was for me one of the most disturbing scenes. Gunnar did such a good job selling probably an originally gentle soul twisted into something sinister and evil. He's probably more nervous about the damages to the house than impaling a teenager on a meat hook.
