Learning to Drift on Assetto Corsa - Tips and Tricks to Get Started

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Are you looking to learn how to drift on Assetto Corsa? In my last video I talked about how I recommend buying a Sim Drifting setup instead of an actual drift car to learn how to drift because the transition from sim to real life is surprisingly natural. In this video I break the learning process down into a few small steps to help folks build the skills needed to start drifting. Depending on your driving experience it can take days, weeks, or even months to really get to the point where you're laying down some consistently smooth drifts. While that can be frustrating it's extremely rewarding when you start seeing progress, and at the same time you're building a set of skills you can translate to real life.
Topics in this video:
0:00 Intro
1:01 Common Mistakes when learning to drift
1:44 Preface to Lesson - Track and Car
2:17 Step 1 - Power slides
3:08 Step 2 - Donuts to improve car control
3:48 Step 3 - Combining steps to start drifting for the first time
4:10 Side note - Drifting balance and Driving Example
4:49 Step 4 - Alternate Drift Initiations - Handbrake, Clutch kick, etc.
5:33 Step 5 - Transitions
6:06 - Closing Advice and Thoughts
My Story *********************
In 2022 I purchased a 2007 Nissan 350z to start attending my first drift events, and I've learned quite a bit along the way. The community has been great and I'd very much like to pay it forward and help anyone looking else looking to get into drifting for the first time. Any burning questions as someone wanting to learn how to drift? Send them my way and I'll either respond or cover in a future video.

It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to note, as you did in the previous video, that this method of just letting the wheel countersteer itself does NOT work on gear-driven (cough cough Logitech) simracing wheels. Even with good and correct FFB settings, they do not have the force or responsiveness to countersteer properly as a belt/directdrive/real car and make things this easy. What I've seen, and sorta learned to do myself, is to "chuck" the wheel in the direction of the countersteer on corner entry, to give the wheel mechanism, a _nudge_ in the right direction.

Yeah I'm not entirely sure how the logitech skillset would transfer to real life. The slow rotation makes you babysit the wheel way too much.

idk what to say, there are difference btw g27 and g923, but the g923 have the new procesor and smaller gear ratio, so the so called dead ffb center is removed, about ffb strenght when i set it on 100% i cant hold back the wheel, i dont say, maybe its easier on belt driven wheels...and about drift there are many videos where ppl drifting with no problem with logitech ,specialy the newer versions like g29 and g923 are upgraded instead of g27/25

The best part is the first time it clicks and you can link an entire track, I used a generic skidpad map to learn the basics of control, then started learning on touge maps like akina and Usui pass. I felt like it helped by not having run off areas I could rely on if i messed up so it made me learn to keep tight lines and good throttle control along with weight transfer all at the same time, but everyone is diffferent.

Dude, it's going to be almost a year now since i started drifting in AC from absolute zero and i swear the basic AC drift track is just perfect. I "graduated" from learning on it a long time ago and mostly drift around online lobbies in wdts cars on other tracks and touges but every now and then i just get back to this track because the layout is just so fun. Also, whenever I'm trying a new car and trying to figure out its behavior or working on a setup the default drift track is always my go to (with ebisu south course sometimes)

I couldn't drift and watched a few videos and yours was the clearest explanation I've found. It give me a great start. Thanks very much. One thing I'd like to add though is that I don't think the Kunos drift track is the best for starting. I tried the Nevada drift pad and it has so much space that it is perfect for learning, experimenting and making mistakes. You can get much more speed up on the Nevada track than you can on the Kunos one. Thanks again for your great video.

Just watched your practice video and subbed to your channel. It's really counter-intuitive when you're first starting out, but try to focus a little more on letting the steering wheel slide through your hands. Looked like you were trying to fight it a bit or not letting the steering wheel rotate enough on it's own to prevent the rear from coming around. But yeah it's super-rewarding once it starts to click.

Loving the channel man! Drifting in AC is pretty damn fantastic, especially in VR, I learned how to drive on a grass field in an old RWD pickup truck my Dad bought for £25! (it was a Morris Marina though so thats why it was cheap, plus its hard to sell a car that at any point a piano could fall from the sky and destroy.. Jeremy Clackson is always watching!) at 15 yrs old, so I was always sidways, but never had the chance to try it on tarmac with a decently powered cars with LSD's or anything like that. Nice driving btw, I must get online in AC for some tandem drifting, not done it in too long! Great tips!

Appreciate it! VR definitely worth it if your PC can handle the overhead, I've got one as well and it bumps the immersion up quite significantly. I had to Google to see what a Morris Marina was, shame they have that piano issue. One of my first cars was a front wheel drive toyota that teenage me thought it was a good idea to handbrake drift in the rain. That car evidently had a predisposition for sliding into curbs, or so I hear lol.

@@JankyDrift Haha, yes my first road car was front wheel drive, I used to park it by handbraking it 180Degrees into spaces between parked cars on the side of the road, wore out the handbrake cable some and snapped the front anti roll bar after a month by cornering too hard (or just driving badly lol!). My headset is a Pimax 5K plus, i have to do alot of graphics tinkering to run it with its super wide FOV, on an RTX 2070 (need an upgrade really), but its worth it, absoloutely love having near full human FOV!

First and foremost, I want to thank you for this video. You're a good teacher. Since I've only spent my time on the track attempting to put in the fastest lap I can, drifting has always been difficult for me since it contradicts my instinct reactions. I think the hardest part for me has always been knowing when to grab and stop the counter-steering wheel. Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have any tips and tricks for when to do so? Or is it purely based on feel and experience/practice? I've got it mostly sorted out at this point, however, there are still some days I struggle and it's incredibly frustrating! Also, as a side note, when putting text on the screen, would you consider leaving it up a bit longer in the future? Even if it is just a witty or sarcastic remark😜

Appreciate the comment - As far as timing on countersteer, honestly there's no real formula to it, it's something you start to pick up and perfect with repetition. I don't even think about it anymore, similar to driving a manual transmission where at first you're thinking about ever gear and clutch movement then it becomes second nature. And I will try on the captions, honestly never sure just how long to leave them up without them becoming annoying.

I would have one dumb question ! With cars around 500hp and lower, on tracks like the drift park in your video, US Air, Grange and other similar tighter stuff, which gear do you usually do most of the slides ? With WDTS and a few other packs, I often find that 2nd always feels too short while 3rd feels too boggy. Am I missing something (I most probably am) ?

  • @JankyDrift

    @JankyDrift

    Жыл бұрын

That's not far from what your experience would be in reality. Especially for turbo engines it can be difficult to keep the spool up from a lower RPM in 3rd which would cause you to gain traction and bog. Then of course running out of gear in second sucks, so a lot of folks will tune the final drive ratio to suit the track they're on and their driving style, so you can give that a shot testing longer or shorter gearing to find a sweet spot for each track. Another thing would be adjusting tire pressure, for example adding a few PSI to the rear can help loosen it up a bit. I like to keep gearing consistent since realistically that's not something I'm going to be swapping out on my real drift car. I spend probably 95% of my time in second, occasionally coming up to 3rd depending on the car/corner but usually not staying there long. There are just some tracks and lines that your car is going to be better suited for, which has been my experience IRL as well. I always watch the LS guys very jealously as they basically float through everything.

Everything aside from ABS should be off. I know some people try to slowly decrease stability or traction as they figure it out, but honestly all you're doing is delaying the learning process. When you eventually try to turn stability off it'll be like learning to drift all over again. Plus none of the multiplayer servers allow driving assists, so you won't be able to drift with anyone unless you turn assists off.

There's times I feel like I'm James Deane because I'm on the door of the lead car the entire time lol. Now all I want is to get a basic seat time car to start going to the local track and getting IRL seat time and putting my drift sim learning and results to reality. One day that'll happen and I hope I can slide the track IRL just as well as the sim.

I've been drifting in real life for awhile and I have no problems (E46 sedan with 1jz and a a31 cerfiro with rb20det) however when I start doing asseto Corsa I keep spinning and can't link anything. It is due to the lack of G force that I can't anticipate or is there a gap in the game versus real life that settings can never make up for and I will just have to get used to it?

I don't actually drive in 3rd person view, I just save the replays that way so it's easier for people to follow. For VR I use the cockpit view, and when I'm playing on screen I like to use the hood camera. You can probably learn in 3rd person, but I wouldn't recommend it because you're not getting the full experience. For example, when you're trying to hit an outside clipping point you have to learn to do that by feel in an actual car vs being able to see exactly where you are in 3rd person.

What do you do if you start to spin out? I start a drift, and everything is fine, but out of nowhere, the car starts getting more angle into an unrecoverable state Also, a question about drift cars irl. In assetto, I’ve found 2 kinds of mods, the ones that drift and the ones that don’t. Steering angle doesn’t necessarily matter, but some cars never catch, and when they do they spin out immediately. While others you can keep the accel down. Idk if it’s an issue of the car mods, an issue of the controller (I use a G29), or an issue of skill. Irl are there cars like these, or can all cars drift beautifully? Thank u for making this vid btw

  • @JankyDrift

    @JankyDrift

    Жыл бұрын

Hard to say without seeing you drive... But it's usually either too much throttle or not enough counter steer. Play around with starting and maintaining a drift using less throttle, you shouldn't really ever have to be at 100%. Also try letting the steering wheel slide through your hands more before catching because the car won't be able to balance itself if you catch too early. Some cars are easier or harder to drift in real life, I had a mustang for a while and swear that thing wanted to kill me. As far as Assetto cars, any of the non-drift cars like the 370Z are really horrible for drifting. I think it's because those cars have racing tires (basically slicks) so when you lose grip they snap back around almost immediately. The drift mods have suspension and steering set up specifically for drift with extra steering angle and less grippy tires. Stick to drifting the purpose built drift cars.
