My motto when designing new product is to “fail fast”. Which means don’t worry about getting it perfect the first time. Sometimes I can get half way through a project and know it isn’t going to work, but I continue on quickly. I can still learn a lot, weather it is sewing process or the fit and feel of the product. When I finish each prototype I make a list of corrections and highlight the ideas that worked and those that didn’t. Keep up the hard work.

I've been doing a lot more waxed canvas/leather combos recently too - it's a lot of fun. They go together really well. Tote bags are a good place to start because they're easier. Excited to test out a roll-top bag soon!

Great video Parker! It's nice to see I'm not the only one that has struggled with those darn binding attachments. I ended up making a bracket for mine that attached to somewhere other than the slide plate. You'll be surprised how well those raw edges hold up. Waxed canvas does not fray like other woven textiles. I have waxed canvas projects I made years ago, use every day, and have had no fraying. Admittedly it does look cleaner with binding. An alternative to binding would be sewing a French seam. You would sew your bag twice; once with wrong sides together and a narrow seam allowance; then you would turn it and sew with right sides together, using a seam allowance larger than the first. My go to place for waxed canvas has been Fairfield Textiles. They have a plethora of options and their costume service is great.

Very cool bag! I bought one from Chrome that has a very similar design, I too like the zipper for "quick grab" items, my solve was a small pencil bag just inside the side zipper. In the end it was not as easy as it would be from the exterior but the bag has lasted me over 10 years because of the minimal exterior design. Keep up the great work! Congrats on your "new" full-time role with your father at Buscadero.

For my bags that use a bunch of layers I use the 5/8 line for seam allowance. It seams like a lot, but I rarely miss any layers. For me I always sew on the strap triangles to one piece (outside the seam allowance) before doing the final seam. That way it doesn't move, and you know you'll catch it in the seam.

have you considered a double fold bias tape for binding those inside seams? it's a light cotton but will neaten up your seams quite a bit. and with it being double fold you open the tape, sew it in place on one side, then flip it closed over the seam and go over it once more. yeah it sucks to have to go over the seams twice, but the look of the finish is worth it for me. really enjoyed your video, thanks, and I am thankful for your honesty when things didn't go right.

I have a few tips. I haven’t seen newer videos so you may have done this, but invest in a domestic sewing machine. They are perfect for small repairs. They also have a bunch of different feet so that binding issue you were having could be pretty easily handled. When it comes to those spots that didn’t get caught, just hand sew them. I love thé bag. Thanks for sharing the process.

I use 12 ounce treated WR canvas and it is easy to work with. Durafin also works but is a bit stiff and has an old tent odor. I think tan 12oz Sunforger would work pretty good, but 10 ounce seems a bit light.

I use an 18 - 20 oz. waxed canvas for my bags, It'll soften up after use and won't seem as heavy. I think the lighter stuff is nice looking, new, but doesn't wear as well, over time.

  • @thejasonofalltrades

Nice bag! If I may, one way to avoid dealing with binding the interior seams on a bag like this is to install a "floating" liner - basically an inside-out version of the bag "shell," sewn to the shell around the mouth of the bag. You can leave it loose, or sew the bottom seam allowances to each other for a more secure liner. Since all of the seam allowances are trapped between the shell and the liner, no binding needed! Also, 10.10 oz. canvas might be a little too light and thin. #10 is about 15 oz., I love that weight for backpacks and similar bags. 10.10 oz is nice for a lighter weight and feel, but for me it doesn't have the same rugged quality I'm looking for from waxed canvas. Thanks for sharing your process, and keep up the great work!

Thank you very much for experimenting with waxed canvas too. It was a very insightful vid. Yep, most canvas bags are using 10oz. For inspiration I recommend to look into Trakke, Waterfield Design and Wotancraft. Their designs are really cool, with a lot of great ideas. Beside waxed canvas, oilcloth is also an interesting fabric, altough I don't know how it behaves or where to get it in good quality. But it sure looks dope. Ripstop waxed canvas is also very beautiful, although quite pricey.

Hello, great bag. I have two ideas on how you can finish the seams, since you are dealingwith fabricand not leather: 1st you can use French seams, this is when you sew the seams from the right side of the fabric (wrong side together) about 1/4 inch seams and them you turn the bag outside in and you sew again about 3/8 to 1/2 inch seam encasing the first seam, this will secure the seams and avoid fraying of the fabric. Second choice will be to use water proof canvas for the strips of binding, this is the favorite choice for bag making to finishthe inside seams, it doesn't frayed and you can cut the strips any width you want. I hope this will help you with this bad finishings 😊.

I have been making waxed canvas bags for years. You can use double sided tape from Sailrite the tape I use is Saemstick 3/8 Basting tape for canvas works very good. Also use Gorilla Super Glue this is your best friend when making waxed canvas bags. You can make binding out of the canvas you use for the bag and use the super glue and glue the binding on the bag then sew up the bag. Hope this helps.

Binding is a pain. I work with 16 oz waxed canvas pretty exclusively and have found that pre-running 1/2” basting tape down the roll of 7/8” grosgrain will hold onto the canvas enough to get to the sewing machine. Bonus is it helps seal the stitch along with the wax…still tediously has to be added by hand but ends up with a straighter binding. Serger is definitely my next investment. Have never tried the attachments but it’s good to see they may be a waste of time anyway. Thanks

sweet project, just some thoughts, You can buy a cheap "vinyl cutter" or plotter from US Cutter Also you can hand stitch binding on your "flat" machine. I actually rarely use my binding set in our custom upholstery shop now. You sew your first line along the outside like any other seam, 2nd run you flip the binding to the inside and run the needle down the edge of your binding from the top. If that made sense lol If gives you a seamless binding, but more importantly it gives you a folded edge so risk of fraying is eliminated.

I really love that you added a zipper. Dealing with that buckle every time would get frustrating. Even on my bags I find that a regular buckle or G hook gets old when you're in and out of your bag a lot. The zipper really helps. The front pocket zipper does add a lot of work to a bag. I think It would be fine if you left it out. The side zipper makes it easy to get into the bag to grab stuff. People always ask me "why can't you just add a few zipper pockets, and an inside organizer." It's because it makes the bags super complex, and zippers are not easy to do quickly. Adding 2 zippers would easily double the production time for a bag for me. I always think simpler is better. In the long run the zippers are going to be the first thing that fails, and I want my products to last a lifetime, and maybe be multi-generational.

That said, what's the point of a roll top bag if you are going to use the zipper for access? The design of his bag IMO was flawed from the start in that roll top bags are really for water proof carriers. So the lining should be a heat sealed vinyl and some lightweight outer covering. Also a buckle connection sewn to the mouth is faster than a vertical strap. I've never seen this guys videos before so IDK if this is a fashion oriented business in which case it makes sense why he did what he did.
