Tips for working with Waxed Canvas

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Check out some quick tips and tricks that I've picked up along the way in my new found passion for Waxed Canvas!
I'm sewing on my @JUKI HomeSewing JP TL2010q, using a size 14 micro-tex needle by Schmetz and Mettler thread size 40 (my favorite!) with a stitch length of 3.5 - 5 depending on what piece/thickness/etc I was sewing.

    My daughter told me to be sure to watch this video as we purchased some waxed canvas. I am a little shy in using. We did purchase some wax from Fabric Fun House to try to wax our own. Would be great if you would do a video on waxing if you have tired or have a interest. And I so appreciate all the comments. TY!!!

    Great video! By the way, I have used my blow dryer to heat up my waxed canvas to remove creases and white marks. I just keep the nozzle moving. I have also heard that a heat embossing tool can be used instead of a blow dryer.

    With the waxed canvas it is the top stitching and contrast colors that make the difference. My daughter had made the Wristlet Clutch out of some waxed canvas. She didn't have any contrast coloring. In relooking at the video the Wristlet Clutch or the Paradigm bag would look really nice quilted.

    handy tips there - thank you. I have worn wax jackets, coats, jerkins and chaps for over 50 years and they are great. I soon learned that re-waxing is easy to do and saves a fortune if you make your own wax mixtures. In a lot of cases, it is easier to make the garment or bag before waxing. I would recommend fitting removable linings for jackets and the like. Makes for easy cleaning but if it is fixed in place, re-waxing requires skill and experience if the wax is not to bleed through. Wax is water and windproof but it does have a very cold wet feel to it and you do need an inner lining if you are going to be comfortable. Thanks for not adding annoying background music. So many folks do, and it makes impossible for my old ears to hear what they are saying

I've just purchased some waxed canvas so I thought I'd use foam and try a bit of quilting like yourself and sew on foam at the back as an interfacing in the hope that this would give it structure. Not sure yet if I'll use waterproof canvas for lining. I'd like to see how your one turned out.

    Great tips, thank you! I’ve been really excited to try waxed canvas but I have one concern I was hoping you could answer. Since the wax will melt at hot temperatures is there a problem with transfer onto clothing? For instance will wearing a waxed canvas backpack in the heat lead to the wax transferring onto a shirt?

  • @SewGnar

    @SewGnar

    Yes, quilt b4 zipper. So the zipper for pocket is to be added in the middle of the front panel going from left to right, making a "whole" for the zipper. Won't that process cut the stitches of the quilting? Thanks for responding so quickly!

    Can I use waxed canvas for the interior of a toiletry/doppelganger kit bag? I'm making one for my brother and he wants a interior that would be more water resistant. And if so, what should I interface with on the canvas? I'm using cork fabric for my outside (from fabric funhouse)
