Learning Chemistry with Pumpkins - Why we DON'T play with Acetylene!!!

Ғылым және технология

This video is for educational purposes only. Do not attempt to replicate anything you see. The warnings and examples of injuries and destruction of property are there to educate you about the dangers of flammable gases. Static electricity really can detonate flammable gases like acetylene so don't mess around with it! Oxy-acetylene welding itself is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted by unqualified individuals.
I intentionally did not detail the many safety precautions I took nor the actual filling of the pumpkins because I don't want anyone to be tempted to try it themselves. There are plenty of bad examples on KZread with little if any educational value and I will not be included in that group.
If you just want to see the biggest boom, step forward to 5:12.
To learn more about Gustaf Dalen see Wikipedia article:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustaf_...
He was such a badass inventor that he kept on inventing even after losing his eyesight to an explosion!
For anyone interested, the reason acetylene is so powerful is the triple bond between carbon atoms. Propane only has a single bond between carbon atoms but can still do plenty of damage. Calculating the "enthalpy" of the chemical reaction predicts a greater release of heat with acetylene than other gases because of that triple bond. One of the many things I learned making this video is that propane is used professionally to cut steel like acetylene, it just isn't as hot and requires more oxygen to do it.

Lesson learned, I should not bother asking myself if I want to watch an exploding pumpkin, the answer after watching is that I want to watch it five more times!

My wife said we have moles in the yard and we needed to call an exterminator... i rolled my torches out dug into the tunnle started the torches up , snuffed out the flame stuck the torches into mole tunnel and 3 min later , i had stuck an extension cord with one end stripped and stuck in the far end of the tunnel plugged in the extension cord..... BOOM! No moles . No yard either.

Quint BUILDs for me personally it was the thumbnail. It’s cool that it gets to the point of the video but you teach things in your videos so I was put off by the thumbnail because I assumed it was just going to be silly. Maybe (and this is just a thought) if the thumbnail was a pumpkin and it showed you “scientifically “ adjusting the air/fuel mixture inside and/or showing you doing the different cuts for the air flow in a picture so it adds that educational feel that I was looking for and why I chose it last. 👍🏽

Every 4th of July my dad's buddy fills up a contractors trash bag with acetylene and oxygen and brings it out to their pond and sets it off like 30 feet from us. It's no joke man. You can feel the explosion punch you in the chest and people hear it from 5 miles away

The acetylene tanks are filled with portland cement saturated with acetone, the acetone will dissolve and store the gas, and safely store this explosive gas, is explosive after about 18 psi... i think it was.... but the acetone will gently bubble out the dissolved higher pressure tank... just be careful with the regulator loosen it right off before sloooooowly cracking that cylinder valve, then adjust regulator. Also torch and regulator flashback arrestors are a great and safe idea. Better safe than sorry. if leak, turn off o2 first... it only supports combustion of hoses.... then oh booy....

When I was about 14 we filled a porta pottie with O2 and acetylene from a tank set the construction workers left behind at night. Lucky for us we had moved back quite a ways discussing how to time it to go off later when the whole thing exploded leaving NOTHING behind. Our thoughts were that it would blow the door open like some huge fart. The neighbor tattle tail busted us ahh but what an experience.

My guess is trapping the air. Especially with the reverse taper, the greater pressure made a better seal.

You can tell that the YT algorithm got a hold of this video. Sucks too because it's a great video and great safety info, too. I have some calcium carbide pellets for little "pops" like a carved pumpkin. I will NOT go anywhere near anything on a larger scale as I've seen some videos where people almost got their Darwin Award for underestimating the stuff. Yeh, I'll stick to cute little puffs of fire, not vehicle obliterating shockwaves. 😂

*Pls, try using stoichiometry to determine the exact mix of 0² to fuel. Then use a chemical mixture(or two if you cant get the fuel release and oxygen release into a simple binary compound) to release oxygen as well as the fuel. Should not be too difficult. Maybe throw some peroxide + manganese(IV) oxide. That should create an oxygen generator that is fast enough to be feasible. Just get the fuel/oxygen ratio right(which is why your demo was hard to replicate and worked better at certain times than others, your ratio was basically dumb luck) I know you know all this stuff, but so do we lol. So we know when you're half-assing around for fun but I'm sure we'd all like to see the real max effort deal. Also, most of us don't have bloody acetylene torches and oxygen tanks lying around. Thanks for the vid. Sub'd and liked. *

I like to cut a 1 inch hole in a pumpkin near the top. Then fill it full with some H2O. A 12 gallon shotgun with a 1 oz slug will do anive job of getting the water out of it.
