Learn Your Bass Fretboard Notes (Easy Starter Method)

Музыка

👉 My full beginner bass course: yeah.bassbuzz.com/moneynotes
Learning your bass fretboard notes doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In 20 minutes, you’ll know all the notes you need to make $$$.
Are you struggling to find the notes on your fretboard? It's probably because you're trying to learn too much at once.
That’s why in this video we’re focusing on “The Money Notes” - the most commonly played notes on the neck. (that actually get us bass players paid :P)
I’ll take you through 4 steps to get you from zero neck knowledge to having a handle on enough bass fretboard notes to survive a jam session.
In Step 1 we start at the beginning with the musical alphabet. I’ll walk you through the basics in detail, including how sharps and flats work, and the two spots to watch out for in the alphabet that often trip beginners up.
Yes, it’s music theory, but it’s not that scary, I promise. And you REALLY need to know this stuff - even pro musicians who “don’t know theory” use the musical alphabet to communicate.
Step 2 is where we start applying the musical alphabet to the bass fretboard. You can’t find anything if you don’t know your open strings, so I talk you through standard bass tuning and my favorite (silly) mnemonic device for remembering the string names.
Steps 3 and 4 get really juicy - we get started with memorizing the Money Notes, which means being able to quickly find any of the notes in the musical alphabet on your bass when someone calls them out to you at a jam.
Then we’ll put it all together and get ready to jam with a guitar player. You get to use your new neck knowledge to find the notes that I call out to you in our jam session.

I spent money on another guy's course because his content impressed me--but he's boring, which makes it hard to stay with it. Viewers, don't make the same mistake. If you get bored easily, and have a hard time staying with things, Josh can help take you from beginner to badass. (No, he didn't pay me.)

About 20 years ago, I had a motorcycle accident. After I healed up a bit, I figured playing a Bass would be good PT for my formerly broken hand. It worked great for my hand, for my playing, not so much. About a year later, my son "loaned" my Bass to a friend of his, and I haven't seen it since. Now that I'm retired, I got bit by the Bass Bug again. On a whim, I bought a used one online, sight unseen for $50, (identical to the "E-bay" Bass Josh played in his 5 cheap Bass Guitar video). Thanks to Josh, I've learned more about music and playing Bass Guitar in the past week than I ever have before. Now I'm shopping around for a good used J Bass - something that actually has a name brand on it... Thank-you Josh, you are the BEST! And how embarrassing it was whenI first tried jamming with others! Your lessons are, hands down, the easiest on-ramp to playing the bass. Genius really. Even at my ripe age I’m learning a ton. Keep it up.

I don’t really comment on KZread, but I just felt compelled to share my experience here. I’m 22, just bought my first bass 2 days ago after a while of feeling an urge to play, loving the bass lines dearly in the songs I love and listen to most. I started guitar lessons in 2021, bought my electric and everything, it felt great and I did it for a few months, but I lost motivation to continue oddly enough… Tried picking it back up again a few weeks ago, but again wasn’t feeling it. Kept fighting the urge to play bass even though I’ve had such a desire to, due to various reasons, such as hearing from some people, “Learning guitar first before bass is essential,” which I found now isn’t necessarily true. Decided to take the leap of faith and try bass, and I am loving the sound so much already and feel so fulfilled. Your lessons help so freaking much for people who don’t have the opportunity (whether it be time or financial) to take in-person lessons from a teacher, like myself at the moment. You explain things so incredibly well, and I feel like a curious kid with a lot of wonder, watching this and being able to translate the keys on the piano to the fretboard. You’re an amazing teacher and your pacing and humor just adds to it, thank you so, so much for these videos (from myself and everyone else watching this pursuing bass for the first time!) My motivation to keep playing is tenfold! 💗✨🥹

You are seriously blowing my mind. I just bought a bass during Black Friday and just went with tabs (where it shows numbers and stuff). I looked at a few things for beginners, but this is the first one where literally everything made sense to me. You are making it so easy on this video, and I have to thank you for it. Thanks!

Josh, just wanted to take the time to say that I really appreciate vids like this on youtube. I’ve been playing bass for almost 30 years. I know this theory almost too well to be able to explain it clearly to a student. Not sure that even makes sense? I am currently teaching the next generation...my son how to play. Your tutorial makes it very easy to understand the fundamentals and breaks it down in a simple and clean methodology for finding root notes, memorizing how sharp/ flat works and when and how to play these notes. Very well done! Inside of just 20 mins you have found a way to take what took me many lessons of non-usable theory and turned it into getting right to a jam session. Exactly WHAT EVERYONE wants to do. Jam! Thanks!

When I was playing bass, I actually just got a chart that had all the notes on the fret board. I did not want to just learn tabs, 0 is not a note, I wanted to be a bit more educated about my instrument. But what you just showed on this video is a very smart way of learning music rather than just looking at a chart and seeing where the notes are and remembering. This is using music theory and knowing where notes are and why they are there. I really do appreciate you video here.
