i just spent half an hour watching a master assemble something i doubt i'll ever have a use for. i still consider it time well spent.
When you boys, and hopefully some girls, are watching this, pay special attention to how Paul explains things. There's no wasted words, he explains the function, the form and the aesthetic. No ums, ahs, there's no script, he's telling you what he knows so easilly because he's a master. Just a joy to watch.
Wow I just called the number on his website and Paul picked up the phone his self. Not some computer or answering service. He was willing to answer my questions and was very patient.
The hammer/bushing segment at 29:53. If there were ever an example of "never underestimate the power of a demonstration", this is it. Pretty convincing.
All the years that I have optioned out of setting up an Instigram and or Twitter Tweeter accounts, I am seriously thinking about it, not just for the possibility of the stickers for your HP parts company, but, to show support for growing your other platforms. I really enjoy watching your videos... And some day, possibly a 1993 Jeep Transmission (42RE) will come across your workbench and decide to do a video on how to not only rebuild a solid unit, but to upgrade one to make it waterproof.... HINT... HINT... When I get home, I will take the time to set those tweeter accounts up...

To water proof Jeep units usually make remote breathers as a start
Just got done using your rebuild KIT, went smooth as butter and you were 100% correct that I was going to need the 0.050" shim! Holy hell, I've never had a rebuilt or new shifter; this thing is as smooth as SILK!!!

Re: Spring install fixture. Another way to get the small pesky spring in is to take out the reverse key and put it in the back slot, Then turn it over put the spring in the hole, then take the washer and slide it in as close to the top as you can and as far as you can till it touches the spring on the underside!, Then with a small set of pliers pref small adjustable, Then turn the spring, as it rises you will see the spring threading the washer, keep turning until the washer gets to the top of the spring, When it does you can adjust the washer and spring from the hole to its perm position. putting the reverse key in the slot keeps the spring from rocketing out and nailing someone. Thought this may add to the great stuff people are sharing. Another Great Vid Paul ;-).
Thanks again for the video! It allowed me get the hurst gto shifter operational. Now goes into reverse!

Awesome video Paul, I’m learning a lot how different are these shifters from the Hurst Ram/Rod ones
Great informative video as always! Thanks
Great content!!! That looks very nice and tight!!! Awesome!!!
Excellent, as usual! Thanks again for the lunch-time video. My old 1969 LeMans had a factory M20 Muncie 4 speed and factory Hurst Competition Plus shifter. I remember the holes in the plates for the shifter rods were smaller than the aftermarket bushings, so I couldn't add bushings. Also, there was a thin coating of rubber on each side of the hole (for vibration damping?). I had no means of removing the slop, apart from adding thin washers.

Nice work.
Awesome video sir! As always you give us your amazing knowledge and share this great information to help everyone understand and properly setup transmissions and shifters! I love your tool steel bushings! Bought them and the HD springs and even your redline gaskets for my Muncie trans! I always share your great products with anyone who wants to make their trans and car better! Also thank you for visiting with me at SEMA 2019! Hope to be able to print out your 3D jig as well!

Exellent video
Nice!! Great info.... :-)
Great video. One thing I was wondering about is that on some Hirst shifters I have taken apart to clean and re-lube the cross shaft had a thin shim washer in between it and the main body. It sits in the pocket of the main body that the cross shaft sticks into. I was hoping you would have shed some light on that. Why do some shifters have it and how to determine if you need them or not?

Shims are needed sometimes to make sure when the body is compressed that the pivot shaft is flush with the body.,. I show this in some off my shorts

So glad to find this video. I have a 66 GTO and the problem I'm having is when I shift into third the gearbox goes into 1st and the shifter gets locked up in the 3rd gear position. I have to manually move the lever back to neutral. I've burned the piss out of my forearm on the exhaust doing it on the side of the rode! Any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Makes one appreciate the relatively maintenance free internal shifter lol.
Great videos! I have a GM NP 440, MY-6 o.d. 4 speed. It has the push in shifter handle. I found a new shim kit for it, but I don't want to mess it up, so how do I put the shift handle in correctly?
@GearBoxVideo

Maybe call the people you got the shim kit from.... I don't know what shifter you actually have.
Thank you for responding, I finished the video and it leads me to believe I have a rod that slipped. My problem started when I was power shifting, so probably banged the gear to hard. Thanks again.
I have a 70 GTO with a Muncie M20 and the original Hurst shifter. Everything shifts fine for the first hour and then it starts getting hard to shift into any gear and seems to hang up in second gear. I've adjusted the linkage a couple times and adjusted the clutch to no avail. Any suggestions? Thank you

Shifting is not time dependant. As your car warms up the clutch is probably not releasing properly. Get rid of some clutch Freeplay
Are these rods with the threaded ends the same as the original ones? What kit # is this? And does this still fit with no modifications to the console?

Kits are make and model specific. You order the wrong kit or have a transmission that never came in the car and a stock kit won't work. Everything I sell FITS
Is there any trick to putting carrier together without the 3d printed fixture? I took my shifter apart to swap in a straight carrier and remove a Camaro style angled carrier to fit my Super t10 to my 66 Chevelle ....and now I can't get it back together 🤦♂️🤦♂️

Hurst has instructions with their rebuild kit that you can download from the Holley website. Even with the instructions it's time consuming but works

I'm assuming that these are identical in construction to the old mastershifts.

What does it cost to 3D print the assembly fixture? I'm considering CNC cutting a set from Aluminum for cost comparison then I will ship them to you to try out. The STL file import may not be perfect so I will email you for better CAD data if you are interested.
@GearBoxVideo

Sure. My email is support@5speeds.com. cost depends on materials. Some people have sent me pictures of the printed fixtures they did at they work well. There are changes that need to be done and I was hoping people would share designs but I think the concept was above most people's heads.
I downloaded the 3d printer file but it's not the right size. It's like 3.89 mm across. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone know the proper dimensions?

As mentioned it is in Inches. You need to read my pinned post on GrabCad. Often times printers load metric as a default.
I’ve rebuilt mine because it was sloppy and hanging up in the 2-3 shift. I closed up the slop to 25 thousands of an inch and it’s still hanging up in 2-3

If the trans stays in 2nd while shifter is stuck in neutral its the shifter. If you can't just get 2nd...like a block out then its the trans.

@@GearBoxVideo It Sticks in the second and the only way to unstick it is to reach through the floor and pull the 1-2 lever back To neutral and then I’m good to go

You may have an internal issue with the cover or a geometry issue with the rod and arm

Sure enough.
Use a brass exauhst nut the long ones 3/8" 16 and bolt cut to the right length as a jack screw to separate the body. to withdraw the plate. and the big brass drift that every good auto parts store sells to alighn the gates to put the 5/8 hardened pin in place the waveyness in the plates makes room for the grease (what i think that driven stuff looks yaaaa)
@GearBoxVideo

I use a jack screw in my very first video if you watched it. And no, the plates should be flat. The plates were perfectly flat for decades until they were made in China.
Another great video, thanks for that. Your thoughts on using heim joints with teflon bushings on the shift rods? Any thoughts/plans on doing a toploader video? Keep up the great work, I've got a folder full of your videos and the guys at work watch them during lunch breaks.

Speedway motors sells rods you can cut to custom lengths and add heim joints to them. They work great. Problem is you may not be able to fit them in stock floor pan configurations. I'll do a Toploader when we get a toploader job in
