I am from Barcelona and of course I speak Spanish as one of my mother tongues (the other is Catalan). It is true that if someone comes to me speaking Catalan I will feel more comfortable, however I have friends from outside Spain and Speaking with them in English or Spanish is good for me.

I love roaming form Portugal to Rome, and it is amazing how there are no true stereotypes anywhere. Language is language and it can be different from even one street to the next, and from one family to the next. People relocate and travel and we all try to get along. In short conversations it i hard to mimic or adjust to the person you are talking to, but with practice you can accomplish the true goal of share ideas and interest and most importantly information as you spend time communicating with thatone particular person.

I took Spanish for 8 years so I feel like I have a basic grasp on the language. No where near fluent, but I could get around. But this is crazy! I love listening to the language but don't know whether I could get by with my broken Spanish. But I love that it's a mix of French and Spanish. I gotta get to Spain to hear it for myself :)

I'm a descendant of a Catalan ancestor who fled to the Caribbean believe it or not during the religious warfare . Yes I noticed French too. But the French gov doesn't accept it as one of theirs I've read up on it being of Latin origin. Before the invasion Catalan was a highly esteemed language spoken by top officials. It's sad what it's gone through over the last hundreds of years. It's a beautiful language and I hope to visit Catalonia one day ❤

Marc why not make a video about Limburgish? Best language there is spoken in Belgium, Germany but for the biggest part in the Netherlands. It is the only Europian language with words that can have multiple meanings because we can 'drag' a tone by making it very long and can spit it out immediately just like the chinese language. For example the word: 'sjoon' can have three different meanings depending on the pronunciation. That is why the Dutch and the Belgians always say that Limburgians aren't talking at all but are continually singing. Please make a video about it, a language spoken by over 2 million people and with French, German and Dutch words.

You could have used the spanish flag to talk about catalan/valencian language. Because it's spoken officially in 3 regions of Spain (Valencian Community, Catalonia and Balearic islands) and unofficially in 2 refions of Spain (Aragon and Murcia). It's Spain's second language (more speakers than english within the country)

If only the flag at the back would represent Catalonia and not just only a group of people .... People should be teaching the values of the catalan culture and not what some may believe in or agree with. It may sound silly for some, but if people do not have any idea about Catalonia then, they will associate this flag with the region and not the original one which only has stripes but hey, ho.

  • @carlosarias3166

The flag behind you is not Catalonia's flag, it is a non-official one used by those who want the Independence from Spain (according to polls they are a minority, but "pro separation" don't want to admit it). It may be considered offensive as it goes against our Constitution.

No, that's like saying that Spanish is a mix of Catalan, Italian and Portuguese. Catalan is a romantic language that came from Latin and, like all other languages, was influenced by other cultures. Some things are similar and others are not. Example: French-Fraise; Spanish-Fresa; Catalan-Maduixa. French-Jeûne; Spanish-amarillo; Catalan-Groc. Etc.

It is a very nice detail to speak catalan in Barcelona, but unfortunately it's not essential and that's why many migrants or other people that arrive to the city and are not catalan speakers they just go by Spanish. Sometimes even with English but mainly Spanish because the majority of the people are castilian speakers. I think it should be a must but at the end of the day we catalans are weak about asking that as a requirement

I live in a Spanish speaking country and I do not want to learn Catalan. It is a regional language useful only in that country whereas Spanish is a global language.

Nobody speaks Spanish. The 2 major dialects of Spain are Castellano and Catalan. Same as Chinese, Spanish and Chinese are descriptive nouns as in the people from those countries. The major dialects of China are Cantonese and mandarin.

Why do Catalonian governments forbid schools teaching in Spanish? Why would the Catalonian government treats Spanish as a foreign language while Spanish is widely spoken in Barcelona and all over Catalonia? Isn't this cultural genocide? I am not from Spain but speak Spanish fluently and I frankly see all this Catalonian intolerance absurd. Don't get me wrong. I like Catalonia, their people and their language but forbidding Spanish in schools is going way overboard.

It is not forbidden, we learn Spanish and Catalan equally... you should listen people outside Catalonia talking about catalans before saying we are intolerant.

PISA tests from 2015 show that Spanish speaking children in Catalonia are two times more likely to fail than Catalan speaking children. WHY??? Because the Catalonian government forces them to be taught in Catalan and not in their native Spanish. If 2/3 of Catalonians speak Spanish fluently, then why Spanish is being treated like a foreign language????? Catalonia is the only autonomous region in Spain that treats the Spanish Language as a foreign language. WHY??? Don’t get me wrong. I like Catalonia and support the Catalan Language but cannot stand the intolerance of the Catalonian Government and some narrow minded Catalonians.

omg Adolfo you really want to reduce an entire nation as Catalunya to another country's language? Your comments reveal an imense lack of knowledge and even disrespect about Catalan people, history and by the way...future! (they will soon be independent, then I will like to see you writting that they should speak castellano. Shame... Cheers from a Portuguese ;) Visca Catalunya lliure i republicana!
