I just love Rusyn people, I'm from Vojvodina and there's a lot of Rusyns here. Rusyn language sounds to me like some universal slavic language that all slavic people could understand.

My Grandma wrote a letter to her relatives in Slovakia and used the formal greetings. This was in the 1960’s. I thought it was a little odd to bring up Jesus while reaching out to a cousin. This makes sense now, thanks to you. It also helps me confirm that she was at least part Rusyn.

Really good video, probably going to make flashcards from these, hope you continue making them.

All the transcriptions in brackets are very approximate, learning the Cyrillic alphabet would help a lot tbh. That's why it's made in vide, so people can hear it. Thank you for the feedback!

Thank you for starting these videos- my ancestors came to the US from Ruthenia right around 1900, and at the time Eastern Europeans were looked down upon so the language in my family was lost due to assimilation. I have been trying to learn to keep our family's culture alive by using books and videos, and I have joined the Carpatho-Rusyn Society

So grateful for these videos. My husbands family spoke a dialect exactly like this. They described themselve as from Galicia and said they were rusyn. Many of these phrases my husband grew up with. Hooray. Thank you for giving context. I'm making notes as if I were a student again.

I know this video was posted a long time ago but thank you very much! My baba's parents were Jewish and Rusyn but they assimilated and never allowed their children to learn Rusyn because they thought English was more useful. She is old now and may not be able to learn it but I am and will speak at home with my daughter so it is not lost. These videos are incredibly helpful so thank you very much :) You may not know how many people you helped with one small effort

Thank you! There are lots of people who are interested, but have no Slavic base, so they'd need to start from the scratch. I'll do more of these :)

Не заметил, как пропустил это видео. Очень сильно удивило присутствие "Слава Иисусу Христу!", подобное встречал в романе Г. Сенкевича "Крестоносцы" и с тех пор оно для меня открылось. Ну и ответ "Во веки веков!" запомнился. В целом, очень помогло видео. Очень рад, жду продолжения!

На рахунок Слава Ісусу Христу, доречі, вітаються багато де на заході України. Прикладом в Яремче, місцеві люди не вітаються Добрий день, а кажуть Слава Ісусу Христу. Те саме але трішки менше на Галичині, місто Івано-Франківськ, Калуш, Коломия старше населення вітається в більшій мірі Слава Ісусу Христу, а молодше Доброго дня

I enjoy the cultural explanation of the the phrases. I remember baba saying many of these and also Slava issusu . But we would say in response Slava vaneki.

Yea, it's pretty much the same thing, but a bit shorter, "Слава навікы"

Привет! Спасибо за отзыв! Не знаю насколько удачный пример, ибо у Patwa была довольно уникальная история развития, в то время как карпаторусинский и украинский развивались более-менее паралельно.

В украинского языка раньше и было название русинский. Как по мне это один язык, только со своим так сказать ответвлением на територии закарпатской Руси. Думаю примером будет тот же моравски в Чехии.

Hello, I'm writing a book, one of the characters is a Rusyn character and I'm looking for someone to help me translate a few words and sentences. I'm trying everywhere as it's quite hard to find any reliable source on this language. I've watched some of your videos and I'm really intrigued by the Rusyn language. What do Carpatho-Rusyns call their land/Zakarpattia oblast? Zakarpattia or transcarpathia is an exonym, just like Ruthenia (for as far as I understand.) Does anyone say (carpatho-)Rusynia? Also, Medvedev and gonzalo lira suggest that hungary might annex TransCarpathia, I wonder what the majority of Rusyns would prefer. (Id guess independance, maybe cede hungarian villages)

Great video! I'll definitely keep watching. Few words/sentences went on without translation in between such as naviky Bohu slava, fest and shumni. Thank you!

"Навікы Бōгу Слава" means "eternal God's glory" or something like that. Concerning "май ся дōбрї/фест/шумні" it's pretty much "stay well" no matter the configuration :) And thank you for the feedback, appreciate that!

@@pityoka7910 шумні would be "noisy" in exact translation most likely but I'm not sure.

I’m definitely going to learn these greetings but I’m thinking of learning Russian as a base language even though my ancestors were Rusyn. If I travel back to north eastern Slovakia (presov) region… would you say many people have knowledge of Russian, thus allowing conversations, even in the villages? (my family is from Velky Sulin)

Well, actually no. If you plan to visit Slovakia in order to find your distant relatives, Slovak will be way more useful than Russian.

Это очень трудный язык. Чего только стоит одно это "health" - много ли здоровля в такой тарабарщине? Я бы не смог, а он смог. Ну и молодец.

Мыгаль, а вот у меня к тебе предложение снимать видео, где рассказывать про грамматику, слова, культуру и даже может историю карпато-русинского народа на самом карпато-русинском языке, как тебе такое?

@@myhal-k , а Ґ и Г как-то противопоставлены в русинском? для славянских в целом это аллофоны единой фонемы: g исходный и ɦ новелла времен южнонемецкого передвижения согласных. gardło, hrdlo, гр̏ло, гъ́рло суть когнаты с фонемными рефлексами, как и жьрати, žrát, жерти, ždèrati, żreć.

Do many Ruthenian's know English?

Rusyns, or Carpatho-Rusyns, is a preferable term, as Ruthenians was used to refer to a way larger group of people that includes nowadays Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Rusyns. Using 'Ruthenians' while addressing Rusyns will only bring more confusion. To answer your question, it has nothing to do with ethnicity in this particular case. Your skill in foreign languages depends on a lot of factors, including educational system in the country. So I can assume that Rusyns in Slovakia will have better skills in English than the ones who live in Ukraine or Romania. But there are too many variables to count.

@@myhal-k Thanks. You speak English very well so I didn't know if there are a fair amount of Rusyns in the Carpathian region who knew English. And thanks for the clarification regarding "Ruthenian" vs. "Rusyn". I was curious which term Rusyn folks prefer and your explanation helped!

@@ssrrapper proficiency in languages is not really connected to your ethnicity, but rather to your economical possibilities, I just was lucky to have enough of exposure

@@myhal-k "proficiency in languages is not really connected to your ethnicity, but rather to your economical possibilities" True, although I'd say the biggest factor is the desire to learn a given language. I just wasn't sure if there was a strong interest to learn English among Rusyns.
