Learn Beach Volleyball Hand Setting Easily (Part 1/7)

Спорт

There are a lot of rules regarding the beach volleyball hand set that make the possibilities to make illegal contacts big, at the same time as it is one of the more valuable skills to have in beach volleyball. Some people decide to never learn it, while others see the future rewards and tackle it head on - sometimes with a lot of frustration as a result.
In this beach volleyball hand setting mini-series I will share some of the best hacks (that I never see anyone else teach!) for learning the beach volleyball hand set as quickly, easily and frustration-free as possible. Once you apply these strategies, don't be surprised if you within a few weeks start having a handset that actually works better than your bump set... and you'll be wondering why you didn't learn this way earlier! :)
In part 1 we are going to take a deeper look at developing a distinct hand position before the ball lands in the hands, as well as something I call the "hand sync method".

    Awesome! Next level according to me is usually about expanding your comfort zone! Putting your hands also on high spinny balls, fast balls most people would choose to bumpset (I show some Phil Dalhausser "falling handset" examples in the last part of the series!), jumpsetting, backsetting, setting far from the net etcetc..! And that's when handsetting becomes really fun! :)

    Thanks! Haha interesting! I was literally yesterday sitting and planning for a small video on that topic, I think it's very natural to want to NOT help players around your level because they are your competitors at the same time.. However, almost every time I've tried, the very same people end up sharing their secrets as well just to reprocicate and in the end we both win! So I'd like to recommend to people to experiment with sharing more knowledge between eachother and see what happens! Unless you are sharing to someone who has kind of a narcissistic personality, chances are you are going to learn this is a win-win type of thing to do! :)

    im curious what you would say is difference between a good handsetter vs great hand setter? Like i saw from my beginner teammates they would set behind me, or miss the ball, or do terrible sets in general, and once you realize what good hand setting is, it generally revolves around setting in a straight line paralell to the net, around a certain height with a consistent curve so your teammate can attack the ball. BUT... i feel most people advanced or even intermediates can manage to do that so I want to ask you... what makes a pro guy much better hand setter than your average "chad" volleyball player in your local beach volley club, who just sets good generally (by setting good i mean paralell to the net, and more or less close to the net consistently from different situations)... i hope my question clear

    Good question! There might be other opinions (often associated with other philosophies of how the game is played compared to mine), but I'll give you some of my thoughts! So in the outlay of my future handsetting course, I have umm like a first part goal to have a handset that the referee is happy with, and that's it. If the referee isn't happy, nobody is. But once that is mastered, the evolution goes in two different directions: 1 - To also make the partner happy, and 2 - to still make the referee happy even if the setting situation is more difficult (think shanked serve receive, a very low and quick ball, a high and spinny ball etc.) And then the ultimate combo is when you can make both the referee and your teammate happy, even if the setting situation is more difficult. So setting well when the situation is difficult leads to a whole library of different techniques, how you need to do to deal with this ball and that ball etc, but just as an example certain low balls you might for example have to prioritize the set quality over your ability to still stand up after you set the ball, so you have to learn "falling sets" because if you try to set and stand on your legs afterwards in these situations, the set will be bad. (I think the last video in this video-series talks about that a bit!) There's way more to that with different directions etcetc but that will be in the course since its a whole bit to go through. On the other hand, making your partner happy with the set (and not only the referee), depends of course on your partner. And different partners think about attacking in different ways, and what is important for them is different. For some players, it is very important that the setter is facing wherever he/she is intending to set, for me that doesn't matter much at all I'd say, but another way of "telegraphing the intentions" of the set is crucial for me if I am attacking. So for example for me, I "need" to be able to read the set location and tempo from the setters body language, regardless of where they are facing. The thing is, all truly high level players I have ever played with (professional or almost professional players), have had this ability in their set. So I don't know. There are lower level players that use other systems to sync up between the setter and the hitter, but the one I personally prefer, seems to exist among professional level players but many lower level players don't use it or aren't aware of it even. So on one hand I don't want to say that I'm right and everybody else is wrong - after all what you need is a system between setter and hitter that works, and whatever does that job is good enough, on the other hand it seems to me that the specific system I like, also professional level players seem to like (whether they are deliberately aware of it or not), so that could maybe be seen as an argument that it's a system that also works on the highest levels. Hope that makes sense. So yeah, a bit longwinded here maybe, but for me, and expert setter is someone who can deliver good and predictable (for the attacker) sets both in good and less good situations. And then the less they can handle difficult situations, and the less their partner can tell where and how the ball is about to go, the less of an expert setter they are..!

  • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast

    @LearnBeachVolleyballFast

    Haha yeah it might! The tricky thing with beach setting is you kinda want to have your hands as wide apart as possible, but not too wide. Which creates for a perfect "slip through" opportunity at least for Mikasa balls that are wet from water or sweat.. Gotta try to be aware of it when theres a wet ball incoming..!

    Interesting video. I personally make average 5-6 mistakes per every 21 succesful hand sets while i practice. While bump sets are almost 100%. And is extremely easy for me to pass the ball via one hand. Upper strike with fist or knuckes. Much faster than 2 hand sets.

  • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast

    @LearnBeachVolleyballFast

    5 жыл бұрын

    Haha interesting! So you mean your bumpsets actually almost 100% of the time both work as well as are accurate enough for your partner to have fun with them? The one handers you use for setting or for the first touch? :)

  • @LORDVADER357

    @LORDVADER357

    5 жыл бұрын

    i mean my bumpsets are almost 100% accurate and my partner easily can make spike. Also i can very easy hit the ball with one hand. For both. Setting and first touch. Also on the third touch as well. This style of playing have too many variations and its true nightmare for the defenders of the oposite team. Oponents have hard time to guess where or when will be the attack. On the second touch, on the third or even on the first. Few partners which i have are comfortable with such style of playing. The rest not that much. Its very easy to simply bypass the blocker of the oponents and only at 2 situations blocker will have some chance - if the ball is too close above the net or too slow and predictable attack. Anything other than that and blocker will be useless while defender will have to cover entire field. Attacks at the sharp diagonals, short wide dropshots. So lets say oponents serve towards me then get low and bump so my partner have two options - to spike or to pass the ball to me so i can hit it towards the oponent side of the court. So dropshots are highly unpredictable and very dificult to catch. The rule says that ball can be played with any part of the body (except serving). So no problem to pass the ball with strike with head,shoulder,elbow,knee etc. Key to success is to hit the ball in oponent side as fast as you can and as accurate as you can. Also many times i hit the bottom of the ball so heavy backspin is created and ball actualy curves back to the net when get over the net. Something like cutshots.

    @@LORDVADER357 Hahaha I like it! Did you see the video I did about my friend Eric who has kind of his unique attacking style? The video is called beach volleyball attacking alternative or something like that, I'm imagining your playing style looks something like that??

  • @LORDVADER357

    @LORDVADER357

    5 жыл бұрын

    Basicly blocker is bypassed completely and ball lands extremely close to the net at oponent side. Hit where defence is not. I have seen the video of Eric's way of attacking. Well, there are many similarities with my Hurricane way. You can think for it like Eric's way on steroids. But like i said few partners find that comfortable and oponents keep crying and saing that these methods are too dirty. For example Erics tomahawk requires two hands while only few times he uses one hand hits. My version is the other way around. Most of the time the hits are with one hand/fist/knuckles while only few times with 2 hands. That way are much sharper and faster. In my style is much more important of how fast you can move and jump and not how high. So few diferences with Eric + One hand hits/pokes most of the time + Sidesteps and short jumps are important + Play first and second balls very often + Return heavy spikes from the oponents instantly + Change angle of attack instantly + Use all parts of your body to hit the ball. Hit the ball with knees,elbows,shoulders etc. And many more. Like vary spin on the ball, make backspins, counter spikes. Btw Eric version will not work against top level of defenders which can dig spikes. It will be free ball for them.

    Hi Alex, just a quick suggestion for a future video. As the hand setting series and the DIY tutorials are one of the most watched on your channel, you might want to take a look at this tutorial for building your own setter's ball: ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Make-a-Weighted-Volleyball-Setters-Ball&id=2836926 I think this training concept is interesting as well as the DIY approach and recycling old balls. Unfortunately, I have two left hands. Would love to see a video tutorial on making the ball and training with it. Cheers

Today I found a new section though that shows me all comments I haven't answered to haha, and this was of course there.. Anyway, that was an awesome article! I've never thought about it that way, and I really like the experiment! I'm gonna try it out myself and see what happens, this could very well become a tutorial one day! Have you tried making a ball like that yourself?

    I have this on my list as a winter project (will not risk injuring my wrists during season ;) as I read this can easily happen if you overdo it). I have some ideas how this could be approached. Would be cool to have a setter's ball with a real beach volleyball (I only saw indoor style setter's balls on sale).
