Learn Beach Volleyball Hand Setting Easily (Part 7/7)

Спорт

There are a lot of rules regarding the beach volleyball hand set that make the possibilities to make illegal contacts big, at the same time as it is one of the more valuable skills to have in beach volleyball. Some people decide to never learn it, while others see the future rewards and tackle it head on - sometimes with a lot of frustration as a result.
In this beach volleyball hand setting mini-series I will share some of the best hacks (that I never see anyone else teach!) for learning the beach volleyball hand set as quickly, easily and frustration-free as possible. Once you apply these strategies, don't be surprised if you within a few weeks start having a handset that actually works better than your bump set... and you'll be wondering why you didn't learn this way earlier! :)
This video is the final video in the series where I'll wrap up everything by looking at some in game footage, and pointing out the technical aspects we have been going over in the mini-series both in pro players as well as in my own game.

Thank you for your thorough content In this series. I have switched my technique probably 3 times this year and could not figure out my main mistake which was not angeling the wrists backwards to get the right hand Position. Many people and countless other KZread tutorials did not pont this out, thank you

Just finished the series, really great stuff! I think its fantastic that you have done this because, as you said, this info doesnt exist anywhere else (at least not on youtube). Also really cool that you have made a community surrounding this! Youre an inspiring guy, and thank you so much for the insight!

Haha thank you so much for the kind words! :) I hope it helps, and yes, the mission is to create something that hasn't been created yet! There is so much depth to beach volleyball in so many ways so there is pretty much unlimited amount of helpful content one could create hahah. What would you want to see next on the channel? :)

Well, i havent watched every one of your videos yet, so i dont know whats already out there, but id love to see you talk in depth about all aspects of attacking. Footwork, positioning, posture etc. Sometimes when i play i get some really good attacking hits, and sometimes i hit net or out all day long and its really hard for me to be conscious about what i do wrong when i fail and what i do right when i succeed.

knut knutsen Cool! Yep, definately planning on doing some videos on attacking in the future! :) One quick tip that can help tons and tons is to film yourself, both when you succeed and when you have trouble, then analyze that video and try to see if there are any key differences - because just like you say, we are not conscious of what we actually do, and the video camera is really good at fixing that problem if we need to change something! :)

Loved the serie very useful and I really like how you go into details. But the last video (this one) is a bit awful to watch, taking slow motion video would have been easier than going back ten time on the same sequence. Thanks for your time ill continue watching and liking your content.

Thanks! And thank you for the feedback, I see what you mean haha. Haven't created another series like this yet, there are some spiking videos (3 so far) that are both standalones but also build on top of eachother like a series. But I have also finally started working on the courses which will be good once they get out! Hope you find more good content! :)

Hi Alex! I'm André from Brazil, and I am very happy to be your newest subscriber (and one of the first ones too hahaha #95)!! I've been struggling with my handsetting for a while now, so I hope this series will help be get rid of my lifts and double contacts as I put all of those drills into practice. Thank you so much for explaining everything in great detail in your videos. Please, keep them coming, and I'm gonna be sure to recommend them to my friends too.

Hahah! Amazing, so happy to hear that! :) I really hope it works, and it is really nice to hear someone who enjoys the "in-depth"-ness! (Makes me remember I am not the only one in the world!! :) ) Let me know how the handsetting goes with these drills and ideas, if you are still struggling in a few weeks maybe we can have a look at some video of you or something as a case study for the channel? :) Just an idea, nothing we have to do! :)

Learn Beach Volleyball Fast indeed, I enjoy learning the things that I do in-depth! Although I’m not a professional player (and never will be, since I’m already 27yo), Beach Volleyball is my favorite sport and I play it regularly on the weekends. I would love to record a video of my handsetting and send it to you. I know this is something that takes time and practice, so I might record “before” and “after” the practice videos too.

Awesome. I agree, when I really want something, listening to a few hours of audio or reading a few books or whatever, surely takes some time (although you can do it in smart ways so it barely takes any time!) but is so worth it that it doesn't matter. Hehe, just gotta comment super quick on being 27 and never becoming a pro - I am a complete personal development nerd, and read a shitton of psychology and mindset stuff etc. What pops up in my head instantly when I read what you wrote is something along this quote: "Your only limitation is the one you set up in your own mind. -Napoleon Hill". Now, what I want to say with that is that of course, there are limits of what is possible, but the thing is that almost all of the time, we do not even get close to exploring those possibilities because we think it's impossible. It surely may be hard, and need a whole lot of "outside the box-thinking" (uncommon solutions to problems) to be able to get there, but the thing is that most people never even make it to the outside the box stage because they already decided it's impossible! :) I have a video about accelerating your beach volleyball career with outside of the box solutions that I'll put up in a few weeks where I discuss this a little bit more. I haven't yet created an actual introduction video for this channel where I'll explain sort of my mission and why I created this channel and what the idea behind it is, but in short, when I was 24 and realized that I'm about to quit snowboarding at a "professional"-level and was completely new to beach volleyball, I learned that many pro's in this sport peak at age 35! Damn there are a lot of really good players even 40 even. So there's actually nothing written in stone saying that in 8-10 years (which you actually still have!), you could be a whole huge lot better than you are now.... Maybe even to the pro level? Not saying everyone has to try to reach there, just pointing out this psychological block that most of us put on ourselves! :) Enough of mindset stuff (haha I can always make you drown in content about those types of things if you'd wish!), let's do it! Record a video now, give yourself a few weeks of practice and see how it goes, and then record another! Maybe we make something out of it for the channel, maybe not..! :)

Learn Beach Volleyball Fast wow!! Hahaha thanks for taking the time to give me such a long and personal reply. And by the way,I totally agree with your mind set! It’s about deciding what your priority is and going for it. Everything has a price, though, and in professional levels, that means giving up your regular job to practice hours and hours (every day, I would say). Although I would love to forget about everything else in my life and just play volleyball every day (hahah), the truth is that this would be a long shot for me. But still, I wanna step up my game and go as far as I can at the amateur level, which can be pretty far as well... and satisfying :-) Bottom line: thank you very much for paying attention to my comments, and I’m wishing you the best of luck with this channel and with your plans to help other people achieve their own goals. I’m sure your persistency and dedication will make all the hard work that comes with this job pay off. I’ll definitely keep you in the loop on my progress as I improve my game and skills; and hopefully, I’ll be sending you a video soon.

Hi Alex, I want to thank you for this amazing series . It is really helpful I have question that I have problem with setting the ball when it too high , my friends said that I carry the ball from the head downward to the chest then push outward which makes it lift , Any solutions /exercise to fix it ;(

jasem alsadi Hello! Thank you, awesome to hear! :) So just so I understand you correctly, this only happens if the ball you are trying to set is very high (your partners serve receive or defense ended up shooting into the air?) And when you set normal height balls you don't have this problem? If yes, I think you recognize that you are "breaking" the "only upward"-cue that I've discussed in the series. However, it is tricky with high balls, but there is a solution. I'd want to call handsetting high balls almost like an advanced strategy, in other words something to not try to learn before setting normal balls is easy. However, when setting normal balls is easy for you, the trick is to "just do the same" with a high ball - something that takes trust and confidence in your handsetting abilities. I think the problem you have is an effect from wanting to "feel" that "OK, now I've absorbed the ball and I am in control of it, let's set" which then becomes a too long of a contact. Handsetting high or heavily spinning balls will feel a bit more like a "leap of faith" where you just have to excecute from start to end without being afraid, and hope that it comes out clean. No catching the ball and checking, just trusting that your hands know how to do it even if the movement will be so quick that you have no way of mentally "making sure this is going to be fine", something that can sometimes be felt in a borderline slow handset off of a lower serve receive. Of course, this confidence in your hands has to be developed. I did it by just going out to a grass field, throwing up superhigh balls that were spinning like crazy to myself and attempted to set them. Once I started trusting my hands to do what they needed to do without me checking up on them, the handsets started working even on crazy balls. Hope that helps, let me know if I misunderstood something! :) Of course

Amazing answer, I think you hit the root cause which is lack of confidence in high ball , sometimes I am doing the same mistake in low ball when I want to set the ball very high so the attacker has time to see opponent and hit the ball.

Awesome! I literally explained this small little tweak to a guy I know in person too because I saw his handsetting troubles were only a "confidence" issue (lack of "let's do it properly no matter what"-mentality), and he just last night said it had helped him so much hahah! :)

It's almost like either you do it properly or you don't do it at all.. There is no inbetween in handsetting, because if the hesitation doesn't get you called for a double because the hesitation will make you fumble, then it will definately get you called for a lift because the hesitation you are doing just takes too much time. Just gotta trust those hands to do what they are supposed to do, and if they do not do what they are supposed to do, then the touch of the hands needs to be practiced more before they can be trusted.

  • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast

Hello! I hope you get at least some answers from these videos! Regarding how many fingers - here is the short answer: Pretty much as many fingers as possible touching the ball. Obviously the thumb and pointer finger will have most contact, middle finger little bit less and ring and pinkie finger even less than that. Actually, you are not the first one who is asking this, so I realized that I am going to create a video that answers this question better and more detailed in video form. I think I'll create it next so check back in a week or two and it should be done! :)
