Leaky Vintage Floor Jack Restoration (Hein Werner)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My dad has had this car jack for years. He bought it used and apparently the previous owner made some interesting modifications to it... They used to use these things to re-bend vehicle frames back into shape after an accident which put a lot of stress on them. Anyway it was leaking pretty bad and wouldn't lift up a car anymore so I decided I'd rebuild it for him and make a restoration video out of it.
I started this restoration project a few years ago, but after I tore it apart I realized I'd need a lathe to actually fix it up properly. It sat in a storage bin for years in pieces until I got a lathe and enough courage to try and put it all back together. Sorry the video ended up being a feature length film... I couldn't really cut it down much more and I don't like multi-part series.

I rebuilt these beasts for 25 years and am glad to say you've done a 98% excellent job. My nitpicks are - You put 29 ball bearings in the caster races, should have been only 28 (they need a little room to roll around easy). From the factory all the pivot points, wheels and saddle stem came fully greased. At '25:10' the rubber plug for the check valve is installed upside down, if it's not leaking now, it soon will be... And finally - The saddle should have been painted white.

But be sure not to forget to double up on the jack stands for non USA floor jacks, they will slow leak at times, which anyone who cares not to die under a vehicle should use without fail, USA or off shore purchased and used ! What I would love to have as I'm watching this is subtitles explaining the different parts as they are being worked on and what is being done. Especially in the beginning disassembly phase I felt as those I was getting whipped around from one piece to another without the context of where that piece was within the larger structure or what the purpose used to be. Even so, I really appreciate the effort that has gone into this video. :)

Congrats, Wawa. Replace your rubber fuel line with steel that runs behind the fan shroud and over the exhaust and use two smaller pieces of rubber line. It definitely gets hot under there, and that rubber will melt. Do your valve adjustments, and that bug will run forever. Also, check the voltage regulator under the rear seat on the driver's side. Good luck, and once again, Congrats goes to Wawa..

Every part you touch becomes new and better then OIM. Watching these videos is for me healing. I am a chronic nerve pain patient for almost 14 years now. Watching your videos brings me on another place, for an hour in your workshop. Thank you so much for sharing al your hard work. I had a shop for restauration of computers and laptops, so I know how satisfying it is to see how your end product become. I wish you a good day and I say, Until the next one. Greetings Bert de Vries from the Netherlands

I recently did much the same on my 1980s jack - glass-blasting, spray-painting in 'reseda green' and black. My old jack is working fine again, yet hopefully more dureable, and I am as pleased to have it as when I first had it almost 40 years ago.

If you do a project like this make sure to soak all the replacement seals in jack oil for a few hours before assembly. Pretty much all hydraulic seals you want to pre soak with the proper oil.

That was a great restoration of that old jack. I am not certain, but I think a shop I worked at had a hydraulic jack just like that or at least similar to it. Now it has a brand new life ahead of it. I love your videos. No talking or annoying music, just getting straight down to business. Keep up the great work!! 🙂
