Leaking Refrigerant! Replace the Leaky Schrader Valve without Removing the Refrigerant! Shown!

This is about how to use the Schrader Valve Removal Tool to replace a Leaky Schrader valve Without Recovering the Refrigerant Charge or Pumping Down. It goes over the disconnect of the gauge followed by leak detection at the service port, finding a leaky Schrader Valve and the process to replace it with a new one and test for leaks.

Who do I talk to before I beat my repair mans as? He came and told me I need a new system because it's old and leaking from the coils. He charged me $875 for six pounds of gas and services. Well 3 weeks later it stopped working so I did a leak check my self and found this exact valve core leak and its leaking bad. He did nothing but replaced the free on then tried selling me a new split system unit. If I see him in label to catch a charge. I hate crooks

I used a defectove adapter for my mini split during the vacuum process which wasn't vacuuming the lines because the Schrader valve wasn't being depressed and then I stupidly released the refrigerant into the system. If i recover the reidgerant and vacuum them will that work, or should i remove the refrigerant and add more.

Just had my unit freeze up yesterday. AC tech found that it was low on Freon. He only had to add a about a pound. Should he have changed the schrader valve also? I know about 2 or 3 years ago it had the same problem and a different company added some Freon to it then. I wonder if it could be slow leak in schrader valve. Thanks for any help.

  • @acservicetechchannel

That would be a small leak. You can use bubble leak detector like the small can of rectorseal and dabber I have linked at amazon.com/shop/acservicetech - and check for bubbles forming. Don't use dish detergent and water as dish detergents are corrosive now a days. You could also replace the valve core/schrader valve with a valve core removal tool. You won't really be able to except for maybe flowing it through the other side and out through the 1/4 port on the new valve that you were installing. this will purge some but not all of the oxygen out of the lines as the compressor won't allow pressure through. We do what we can, when we can to do the best job possible. Great Question Steven!

You want to use your thumb and reverse the valve core removal tool slowly and continue to turn the service tool counter clockwise as you slowly move it back. That will guarantee the valve core comes out with the tool and doesn't get stuck inside the shaft. Also, before unscrewing the C&D tool from the service valve, you want to remove the rear tool portion first so that you don't end up with a leak. If there is a leak you can quickly shut the ball valve and prevent refrigerant loss. I am not a HVAC technician, but a homeowner and this is how I replaced all 4 of my Schrader valves on both my units.

3:59 - I see your tool is moving quite a bit up and down as you were screwing in the new valve. Have you ever cross threaded with this tool?
