Leaf Filter Gutter Guards: a Song of Ice and Snow

Snow and ice combined with any screen style gutter guards will not work.
In my area of southern Indiana, gutter guards are a good solution to plugged downspouts as we just don't get the snow and ice accumulation to make a difference. If you live further north....you might want to consider the potential extra runoff near your house foundation.
Thanks for watching!
Stay safe!

Thank you for showing this KZread as it was very helpful. I almost fell for the scam of Leaf Filter and signed a contract for 3,400 and thanks to videos like yours, I canceled before they could install them. I am so grateful for the 3 day buyers remorse law too.

Thank you for watching Jennifer! You can go to the big box stores and buy very good quality gutter guards and hire a local handyman with a ladder to install them and save thousands of dollars on bigger jobs. Good luck to you!

This is happening to us right now. The small amount of snow we had recently has been followed by rain and freezing rain. The mesh is completely covered and water is streaming over the gutter towards the foundation. LEAF FILTER IS NOT AN ALL WEATHER SOLUTION!

None are. You have to decide if you want to put up with the inconvenience of some water dripping over sometimes due to winter conditions, or having to dig the garbage out of your gutters 2 or 3 times a year. Which is worse? That's for you to determine. At least with a cover the gutter can always be clear and working and not holding water and debris.

Thanks for your video. I live in Michigan and your video helped me to decide to just buy hardware cloth (galvanized steel mesh) with 1/4” mesh spacing instead of the brand name gutter guards with micromesh. I feel like the 1/4” mesh is small enough to keep leaves out but big enough to keep ice dams from forming in the winter. I guess I’ll find out soon enough with winter almost here.

I have a small gutter cleaning business I got a call this winter to come out and clear gutters. She stated that she's having overflow. We live in northern Indiana and had like 6 in of snow LOL I showed up looked at her gutters and said nothing I can do. They were solid ice and I do mean solid. Gutter guards are awesome except for this very thing they build up ice on top and you're going to drain right off the sides no real way to avoid it up here

I like his videos. I have a question? Considering snowfall and ice//// wouldn't the problem reside in no roof heaters which are available and should be figured in to prevent ice and snow buildup. In my opinion the product says leaf not ice/snow filter. Lets be fair :) But the video is great.

You're right, it depends on your specific location and how much ice and snow you expect to deal with. In the midwest it can vary greatly from year to year. I'm just showing what can happen if you don't take extra precautions. Thanks!

Looks like the screen was installed backwards, those gaps between panels look too wide. Water leaking down behind the gutter is very common which does cause rot. Well the upside to it is you don't get much ice or snow. However for individuals who face months of it, it becomes quite an issue.

It's a very common issue especially in states that get a lot of snow and ice. They just conveniently don't mention it at the time of the sale or install..... And then when you complain they blame your house for not bringing properly insulated.

I have the same issue. I have a metal roof as well and had the leaf filters installed this past spring. We’ve only got about 3 inches of snow fall this season no ice, but the freeze thaw cycles made the ice build up and there literally a waterfall in front of my front entry. I can’t imagine what this would be like with our “normal” snowfall totals. I’ll be contacting leaf filter for possible solutions however I’m not very confident they have any.

The metal piece that your moving is called the drip edge. Whoever installed that did it wrong. On the back side of the filter there is supposed to be a piece called the rear channel. The rear channel sits over the drip edge and right under the shingles. The rear channel will prevent water getting on your facia board and rotting. But the snow that’s something that your can’t prevent from happening I don’t think.

Sir i own The Gutter Guard Specialist in CA and live in the El Dorado Forest not far from lake tahoe. You have a very simple fix. Heat Cables need to be installed. They turn on automatically when temps hit near freezing. Make sure you run a dedicated electrical circuit to the cables.. your gutters will run perfectly. Dont know why your contractor didnt mention them to you but heat cables are the answer. Wish you thr best Feel free to message me with any questions... take care
