The problem with all gutter guards especially in Canada here is during the winter seasons when it's snowing melting and freezing you get ice damming on top of your trough which is worse than having the ice damming inside the trough because the water begins to back up under your shingle roof Edge metal or slate whatever you have and rots out your fascia board and your plywood I don't think any trough guard is good due to the fact that the water can't freely run into the trough run freely off of the roof Edge you're creating obstruction by putting a trough guard on not worth it I honestly believe the best investment for a customer is just to hire someone once a year to come in and clean your troughs if you have lots of trees around your house if your house is clear of trees then you would only need to clean your troughs maybe every few years just to clean out the muck in the bottom of the trough people are wasting their money and time with these trough covers

I bought some of the plastic ones from Home Depot and I can just pop them on and off so I take them off in the bad areas during the winter and put them back on in March before the trees start dropping their seed pods and bud casings

If your gutters are easily accessible, I'd opt for no guards at all. You just need to do the proper maintenance in the spring and fall to keep them functioning.

Where we live, the elms drop little seeds that turn to porridge when it rains. I believe the only thing that will work long term is micro-mesh filters installed at the *same pitch as the roof*.

I installed the ones with holes from Lowes. I have 5 large trees within a few feet if the house one is a 85 foot pine. So even the roof is covered with leaves/needles of oak/maple. I simply walk the edge of the roof with a strong leave blower almost touching the guards and aiming one direction and walk to the end. Remove end guard that was screwed down. Clean up and ready to go. This is best when it is dried out so I do it before the storms really start hitting.

Since there is no gutter guard that is able to keep 100% of grit/debris (gutter butter) out of the gutters, the key is to select one that requires the LEAST amount of attention/cleaning, based on your specific conditions (rainfall, snowfall, amount of trees/leaves in the area, etc). Your video/presentation should OPEN with my previous sentence (IMHO). Putting a 6 inch gutter guard panel over the downspout (2 screws only), and another 6 inch gutter guard panel at the "high" end of the gutter will make easy access. Then, use a garden hose with a jet nozzle on high to wash out the gutter of any debris. WORKS GREAT!

My problem with the fine mesh gutter guards is the little holes fill up with asphalt shingle granules and blown dirt which let rain water flood over the gutter onto my patio. I would rather clean open gutters once or twice a year.

I did the mesh covers placed on a new fire station and there was a pine tree that dropped needles to a point where the gutters looked like willie Nelson’s beard. Total crack up. No gutter cover is perfect.

the european method is NO gutter guard but very large gutters and downspouts . this does cause blockages but not often . to avoid this i installed a clean out where he downspout enters the ground . internally it has a screen that catches debris . the clean out access unscrews and allows for easy removal of the debris . this is a five minute job about three times a year .

Thank You for this Video. You talked me out of gutter guards and into leaf strainers for downpipes instead. I am also going ask about clean out access near the ground but do not know if anyone offers those in their gutter systems.

The wisdom of rounded copper gutters was lost during the 40's and 50's when square aluminum became standard. The shape was self cleaning snd the copper prevented the growth of the green life that holds the dirt particles together.

Evaluating gutter guards without any water? Doesn't rain wash most of the gutter butter off before it can work its way into the gutter? Rubbing it into the gutter with a gloved hand is testing the gutter under different conditions than what actually occurs. My experience with gutter guards is they work best on houses that don't need gutter guards.

I spend most of my time throwing them out. So much dirt still gets underneath the guards causing more damage and resulting in a much more expensive clean. Add it to the list of scams right alongside the Microsoft Technical Support con and the classic Nigerian Prince scam.

Gutter guards do help, but they do not eliminate cleaning gutters. And if they are screwed on, that just makes the job that much more time consuming taking them off and putting back on. You really do need to go onto the front of your roof and use a small blower to blow leaves and debris away from the guards in the spring and the fall seasons.

I used the same thing on my house and they plugged up the 1st rain fall and I had a waterfall off my roof also when I removed it after 2 weeks the bottom of my gutter was 1/4 full of the fine debris I removed them and I'm using the foam now working much better and if you install by cutting at each gutter support they are easy to remove and the best part is they are cheap and easy to install ive used the foam for 4 years now

@PropertyWizard If I wanted to install the screen around some fixtures, what makes the cleanest cuts and can the cut ends butt or overlap? I assume overlap is ok with density x2.

You forgot to test water flow into the gutters. I suspect water hitting the clogged meshes will just pour over the gutters onto the ground.

Yes, I do have it now. I'd like to affiliate with you guys from Property Wizards, and either to obtain some sort of training from you, or to open sort of a subsidery like to become a franchise. Please suggest.

Gutter Guards are useless if your development has pine trees or any small buds that fall on your roof. Many of our neighbors and our home was covered every years with pine needles and other small small pieces. We all had different types of gutter protection and the contract on each had a warranty that would prevent stuff from clogging our gutters. Heavy rain caused rain water to go over top the guards and water would just flood the front and rear of our homes. Call after call and the company never showed! We all ended up having the guards removed. the following year we all got together and hired workers come our twice a year and clean our gutters!! no more clogged gutters!!!

I'd say you're right about 99% of gutter guards. I've been a carpenter fifty years, worked with dozens of roofing contractors and they all said gutter guards were a joke. Well, a couple of years ago, I started hearing good things about RainDrop guards, so I installed a 30 foot section to test them. After a year, the gutter was clean as a whistle, so I installed them on the rest of our gutters. The design is great - they're installed on a slant and the surface is slick, so leaves just slide over and off.

completely unrealistic test - dirt does not fly through the air and land in gutters. leaves, needles, and granules are what land in the gutter and after time break down into "dirt"

We clean gutter guards all over town and I find plenty of clogged gutter guards. My test was definitely pushing these things to the limits, but the stuff i brought out here came from gutters in the PNW. Completely realistic test bud.
