No kidding! that looks like a sub 2000 square foot single floor home, I have a 3500 sq foot home, and All new commercial gutters were only $4000. I have a second home also about 3500 sq feet that I had a "gutter monster" leaf guard system installed for also about $4000. That system has been maintenance and trouble free for 14 years. Yeah I hate to blame victims, but $11,000 for gutters? With a price tag that high, I can see why things like "100% free labor" sounds appealing. That is a very deceptive tactic and I'm almost certain that's what that company did. Who needs to pay labor when the product is being upcharged 500%?

  • @Jrichardstein

Sorry for the trauma they caused you. That price is absurd, and the product may work in climates with drizzle rain, but no way can that laminar flow design work with sticks and other debris dropped by trees. I got a deep gutter installed, put in stainless steel gutter guards and they work great. Not the micromesh ones, those clog up, but the larger hole design works great, even for pine needles.

Brenda, those idiots quoted me $6400 for our house. That was the end of the conversation. I used to install gutters and they are nothing to install. There are not a lot of extra costs in producing Leafgaurd's over regular gutters. A small amount of extra labor involved, but not enough to quadruple prices over regular gutters. Probably more than quadruple. Rip-off criminals. Edit: I just noticed, it's all straight runs in the front and on one end. My crew would install regular gutters on a house like that in 4 hours. They are printing money that doesn't belong to them.

I’ve been roofing and installing seamless gutters for a long time and I warn every homeowner that either puts on new gutters or new roof where they have thought about leaf guards or anything of the sort I tell them never to buy leaf guard gutters. They are worse than just leaving them open and letting the gutter do their normal job. I tell customers that it’s cheaper to hire even a roofer to come clean your gutters than it is to pay for these to be installed I’ve even come over to places where they have got lead guard are completely covered in inches of dirt. And pine needles rendering them completely useless making the rain run right off the roof as if there are no gutters at all thank you for sharing your video. I’ve been blasting them all over social media for years because I think it’s wrong to trick our elderly and veterans into thinking they’re getting some thing that is actually useful when in fact, they’re being just lied to if I were you, I would sue take all your video evidence hire a lawyer, and take them to at least small claims or something let them know you mean business don’t let them just walk away with your money.

I was a roofer for 12 years in my younger days {I'm 68 and retired now}. I came across all different types of gutter guards and screens and I can tell you that none of them were effective. Back then I lived in Columbus Ohio and every autumn after the leaves fell the company I worked for would would get lots of calls to clean gutters and I did a lot of that work. Many of the homes I worked on had gutter guards and I would have to remove them to clean the gutters and clear downspout blockages then replace the useless guards making the job take twice as long which cost the customer extra money in labor. I live in SC now and probably twice a month I get something in the mail wanting me to get an estimate for gutter screens. I just chuckle and throw it in the trash. I am still able to clean out gutters myself. I think these companies prey on elderly folk. My advice is to call a reputable roofer and have them clean out your gutters. Don't fall for it. They absolutely do not work.

6-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts will carry nearly twice as much water as 5-inch with 2x3 downspouts. And when you connect your downspouts to an underground system to carry the water away from your house, NEVER use corrugated drain tile. The ridges catch debris and plug up, it doesn't lay flat in the trench, causing high and low spots, and people who do install it don't seem to know that water runs downhill. Use 4-inch diameter schedule 20 DWV (drain, waste, vent) PVC. It's smooth on the inside, making it much more difficult for debris to become trapped. And if you install it with 1 inch of drop over 10 feet, it won't freeze because when the flow stops, the pipe drains before it can freeze.

Sadly that happens to anyone that doesn't know any better. At a local restaurant I eat at the owner mentioned a toilet that did not flush properly so he called a plumber, the plumber said those 3 toilets were not commercial type and the only way to get them to work would be replace them, to the tune of about 5,000.00 I told him I would take a look at it, they have been there since 1970, and only 1 was having a problem, I snaked it and didn't find anything, but I noticed it just wasn't much water coming out when flushed, (by the way, these were the commercial toilets that have no tanks, just the big chrome handle to pull to flush) I pulled the valve out and found someone had put in the wrong valve, it wax supposed to have a 3.5 gallon valve, but only had a 1 gallon valve, so a 25.00 valve fixed the problem, 4,975.00 less than the plumber quoted. Owner bought the valve and I put it in, by the way, I got a really nice steak out of that.

For $4.00 a foot, he put all new gutters, down spouts (8) and leaf guards up. Total cost was $1100.00 with my military discount. I went from paying some local mexicans to clean my gutters twice a year to spending a few hundred dollars on a gutter cover with self tapping machine screws that was just aluminum with a lot of small drilled out holes in it. Hired the same people that cleaned my gutters to install it and they did the gutter cover installation from the roof all the way around the house in less than 30 minutes. 5 years on, It's been fantastic. No longer the splitter splatter of overflowing gutters in front of my front porch and side window. Every year it pays for itself. Sure a lot of youtube videos say that eventually the gutters will fill up with roof granules as the roof degrades but I can use the money I've saved to deal with that later. Ya it will be a big expense later but so will the roof replacement. Home ownership ain't cheap.

I’ve been a STATE LICENSED contractor who specializes in exterior work since 1999. I can tell you I’ve never done a gutter job on a single story home with leaf guard for more than $2500. We constantly come in behind these guys and fix or entirely redo what they’ve messed up. A lot of customers who got their bid first said they knew it was a scam soon as their sales guy is taking 25% off in minutes if “you sign today”. You can’t NEED $4,000 for a job and be down to $2500 in minutes of starting the sales pitch. And most of my interactions in Florida with this company are just leaf filter related. They don’t get many full gutter jobs down here. It’s all just adding leaf filter to already installed gutter systems. But they switch things in those like the hangers for wrong sized hangers and I’ve had 3 entire houses of gutter fall after they went and “upgraded” the system. These aren’t contractors or even Constuction oriented humans. They’re sold a franchise and are getting into work they’ve never done.

Leaf Guard gutters were already installed on a house I bought. During the first heavy rain I realized that the gutters were overflowing and full of small limbs and leaves. I clean them every year. Because of the way they are made they are not easy to clean. A contractor poked a hole in the bottom of the gutter while building a patio. I tried to get the local Leaf Guard contractor to come out and repair it. They refused, they told me the only option was to replace the entire run across the rear of my house. This gutter is under trees and has some dents in the top from limbs falling on it. They told me that voided my warranty. I give them a bad referral every chance I get.

LeafGuard is heavily advertised on some niche-TV networks in the US. The aspect that always got me puzzled about the design of it: How can the rainwater drain into the gutters when there is a layer of leaves on top of the LeafGuard grill screen? Leaves piled on the roof and gutters would block the drainage of the rainwater to the gutters, making the water flowing to the ground as if there were no gutters in the first place.

LeafGuard, allegedly, works by using the surface tension of water. The theory is that water will follow the curve of the edge into the gutter. Meanwhile, they say, leaves, bugs, dirt, and debris keep going over the edge (not into the gutter) under its own momentum. Knowing that water is a "sticky" molecule, and seeing the design of the gutters, I could never wrap my head around how they figure debris - especially small bits of debris - would make the jump to avoid being flushed down the gutter; it doesn't make sense. But, they sure do have some slick marketing!

I installed Leaf Guard gutters on my home in 2006. The best thing about them is that they never capture debris or clog. I have more trees that are taller and closer to my home than those seen in the video. My previous gutters were horrible to maintain, requiring me to clean them a couple times a year. Failing that, they were useless after a year or so of neglect. The worst thing about Leaf Guard is that it doesn't capture all of the water shedding. At times, water comes right over the side, as seen in the video. If it were free to me, would I replace them? No. Anything that could capture the materials from my trees is not going on my roof. I suggest one warning to the homeowner. @1:02, we're shown water jetting over the gutters in a corner, a valley of the roof. Pay attention to that location. I have a similar valley, almost twice the pitch and taller than your roof. None of my gutters ever worked there, and they caused the water to build up next to the house and ingress. By the time I figured it out, it was too late, requiring me to repair four or five feet on either side of the corner. Make sure those shingles come down over the gutter.

I’m 71 years old. Had a heart attack in 2022 which required a quad bypass to repair. This was in Jan of 2022. In June of that same year after getting an estimate to clean out the gutters and install Leaf Guards I decided to tackle it myself. I had been in rehab for 6 months and lifting weights with the approval of my Cardiologist. After convincing my wife I would “ take my leisure “ on the job, I got the materials together and a ladder and began to clean out all the gutters. Took 2 days to clean the gutters and 2 days to install the leaf guards. I watched a You Tube video to learn the ins and outs which made it way easier than I thought. My son wanted to help me but I insisted I would be fine. It was time consuming and me feet got sore from climbing up and down the ladder for 4 consecutive days. But, I finished the job. The estimate I received was for $2100 ( which is why I researched doing it myself ). The total out of pocket for me was 42 leaf guard sections at $4.50 a section and 4 pairs of work gloves, which I had already. The total cost was $189. I was shocked that’s all I invested. But, 2 years later, my gutters are 98% cleared and flowing freely. I brushed them off or spray them off once a year in the fall. We have quite a few trees. A side note……. After the job was complete I spent the next 2 days relaxing and recuperating. I told all this to show how much you get ripped off from some of those companies. They would have made $2021 profit from my savings! I realize most people at my age shouldn’t be doing this type of labor outside but I wanted to see how far I could get the job done. Little did I know I could complete it myself!

Your gutters may be over flowing from to small of a gutter during these heavy rains. If you have a 5 inch K style gutter, then you could go with a 6 inch K style gutter which doesn’t sound like much, but adds a great deal of extra water volume. If you have proper run off away from the house, I would not worry about it so much anyway unless you are getting damage to landscaping as the run off occurs. Gutter guards will not help you with only heavy rain, it will actually make things worse. If your gutters are old and worn out, look at the 6 inch gutters

Every discount claim is typical marketing BS. This industry is full of scammers and it’s sad there isn’t more consumer protection from it. I bought a new big screen TV a few years ago and the hard sell on extended warranty was nauseating. My response to it was all of these risks and potential fatal flaws that are likely to happen soon after the manufactures warranty expires in a year, tells me I should not buy this sub standard product. It’s funny how saying thanks for the heads up and walking towards the store exit changes a sales representatives perspective on the quality of their products. The harder any industry pushes a product or service, the more likely it’s not to your benefit as good products and services sell themselves, not requiring paid chearleaders or deception. Thank you for the video and sorry about your troubles. I like to think there’s a special place in hell for people like this.

The first time I bought a new BMW they had me in the dealership after dark and locking the doors at 9, I had been there more than 8 hours, the sticking point was they wanted me to buy the extended warranty which I did not want, warranties like that are scams, period. I finally got so tired I agree rationalizing that it is a BMW, the repairs would be outrageous if anything ever went wrong. Well it turned out that this warranty was $3,000 financed over 6 years at 5.5% and only covered from the end of the factory warranty (50 k miles) till 75 k miles. And yes there was a problem at 52,000 miles, the center console where the A/C blower motor is inside the dash sucked in a paper napkin that was in the glove compartment because BMW does not put screens over the ports that allow air to get to the motor. They had to disassemble the front interior of the car to get to it with a fairly hefty bill which I submitted to the warranty company, and they denied the claim saying that was not a mechanical repair but "cleaning." AFTER MARKET WARRANTIES ARE ALL SCAMS! ALL OF THEM, and what gets me is how Walmart wants to know if you would like the warranty on your purchases, I am like it is a $1.49 lighter, but if something goes wrong they will pay to ship it back to China and have it repaired and returned to me? And the Warranty is $12.99? I never, NEVER ever buy the useless inconvenient expensive fraudulent warranties!

I bought an extended warranty on a 2003 Toyota, it was only at the time $300-400, but after I bought I wondered "the whole point of buying a Toyota at a premium price was because it was reliable - so why did I need an extended warranty". Fortunatley I did have a few repairs, and I broke even on it. But never again. Extended warranties are money makers for the retailer - meaning they are losers for you.

I've installed two sets of gutters on two houses, buying the gutter components from a contractor wholesaler. I installed gutter guards on both sets, commercial slide-in on the first, which worked OK but not great. When it came time to do the second job, I researched and wound up using expanded aluminum material from the local metal yard instead of commercially available guards. This worked well, and cost around $200 for the whole house. In huge downpours, the gutters will overflow in a few spots as the down spouts get overwhelmed, but this is uncommon and not a big deal. Shop around, this is a local handyman-level job and shouldn't be anywhere near the prices quoted in the video.

That is correct. $2k max for full gutter installation from a reputable company on most houses. It’s the salespeople that are to blame. They prey on ignorant people. No empathy, just dollar signs in their eyes. The customer too shares partial blame at times. They expect way too much. It’ll never work perfectly. Don’t expect it to. And…. when it doesn’t, don’t blame others. You signed the contract. Pulling out a violin and telling a sob story putting no blame on yourself is just wrong. Do your own research. Educate yourself. Be armed with knowledge and it’s far less likely to be taken advantage of.

I have old underground drain pipes, they were there when I bought the house thirty years ago, I imagine they are all clogged, and have tree roots growing through them. Whenever a heavy rain is predicted I just attach an eight length of gutter to the down spouts and have it run away from the house (in a real heavy rain 3-4" in 24 I'll ad another eight feet. Fortunately my house was well sited (thats one of the reasons I bought it), and the land slopes away in the back and front. For me, I don't think its worth the expense to dig up the old drain pipes.

When we asked how do we fit this situation, the leaf guard rep said we would have to install a heater wire on the roof, which would be thousands of dollars. I learnt this from the first home I owned. The original owners built a verandah that had some type of special box gutter I later found out was designed to be leaf/maintenance free and at first they work. But the problem was that eventually over years bits of twigs, leaves and all types of small debris get in there and clog the whole thing up and because it's a box design it's impossible to remove anything. I'm disabled too, so I had my brother in law cut inspection holes in and together we used the hose to flush out years of crap. That's why I will not put gutter guard on my new house. Leaves are a pain, but gutter guard is even worse. I feel sorry for the home owners and it's absolutely disgraceful that anyone takes advantage of a disabled person (I've had my share) especially a veteran. $11,000 too much for that job. Beware also that sometimes these companies operate under different names. So you think you're getting two or three different quotes, but they may be the same company.
