    Hi. Been watching Simons videos. Hits the nail on the head everytime to what we all have experienced in life and at work. I wholeheartedly believe in what he says is worth trying to strive for, to achieve these things within our lives. However i sadly ponder the simple fact in that as humans our biggest barrier facing us point blank, to get to where Simon wants to be. Is humanities emotion of GREED. Greed seems to be the constant emotion, always lurking that dogs Simons vision being fully realised.

    The 4 principles from this talk summarised at the end by Arthur Brooks: 1. Leaders who know their own "Why" understand shared sacrifice - which is a privilege, not a negative. 2. Ask yourself: "What am I willing to fail for?" If you can answer that you're on tract to understanding your "Why". 3. Courage is the ability to act in the face of fear but to do that, we need people we trust. Find those people you trust and be those people that other people can trust. 4. Purpose matters more than 'Happiness'. So set upon your own purpose, and help others find theirs. Words for a better world indeed.

    This was very good, as expected with Mr Sinek involved. One thing that would have been helpful to me is the definition of terms, in this case, empathy. I felt there was an implicit assumption that everyone listening, and even the two of them talking, that there was shared meaning. For me, empathy is not simply some "touchy-feely" caring for others. Rather, I learned and defined it as, "truly and deeply understanding another person's situation, idea, belief, etc., demonstrating this understanding to them, but NOT agreeing with them." In contrast, sympathy is having that same level of understanding coupled with agreement. They also threw in "compassion" and I wondered what that meant exactly. In contrast, I loved how Simon did a great job of defining happiness versus fulfilment. Wished we could have had the same with empathy.

    I must admit I was also rather confused by the distinction between empathy and compassion. I also don’t regard empathy as touchy-feely, bu the ability to understand (not sympathize) when someone else’s perspective. The hostage negotiator, Chris Voss calls this “tactical empathy” in “Never Split the Difference”. In other words I don’t have to agree with or even like someone to empathize with them, and as such I don’t understand what my personal connection has to do with it.

    The Great Algorithm has for some reason sent me Simon Sinek. Oh, the irony. I worked for a large organisation for 15 years. There was a constant flow from managers of the vacuous epithets of Simon Sinek via group email. I looked him up.....arts degree, law school drop-out, worked in advertising......and PRESTO! he's a guru! Without any management or leadership experience! I simply couldn't believe that his 'pearls' enjoyed such currency, though the Forbes article helped. The organisation I worked for was the most dysfunctional workplace I have encountered in a long career: serious corruption; constant expensive reviews by external 'consultants' who had no idea what they were doing so nothing ever changed (my team alone underwent four major reviews, quite apart from the whole-of- organisation reviews); constant staff turnover; independent assessment of systemic racism shelved; millions spent on a major program still in place but for which not a single piece of favourable formal research has ever been produced; huge expenditure on infrastructure, IT etc while services and outcomes for our actual clients deteriorated. We all need to stop looking (and paying big bucks!) for self-appointed gurus. Just look at the local 'emperors' parading their new 'clothes' right in front of you, allow yourself to laugh out loud at their and say '2+2=4' three times a day. Nothing will change until you do.

    In the conversation about senior leaders being less empathetic, could it be that it's not that they don't reciprocate emotion anymore, but rather choose to respond from a non-emotional standpoint. They understand the emotion, feel it, validate that feeling in themselves, but choose not to incorporate it in their response. In other words, exercising emotional intelligence.

    I liked his answer to that lady’s question about incompetent team members... he basically turned the perspective onto the lady. How do you know they are incompetent? Why did you hire them in the first place? They must have been good in the beginning unless they lied.

  • @sorencyrano1413

    @sorencyrano1413

    From my point of view this was rather a weak answer. I am a project manager. I don’t hire team members, but gets them assigned to my team. I don’t have any control over who I get to be part of them team, but I am deeply reliant on them being willing to want to do their job. And let’s be honest here, some people are just wrong hires. Full stop. They might convince upper management that they are capable, but are absolutely terrible in day to day operations. And it isn’t lack of experience or lack of training. Those things you can deal with, but you can’t deal with someone who fundamentally aren’t willing or capable to do fulfill their position. One person in particular comes to mind. Not a single task was done correctly or timely, and they just didn’t care. And talking to other project managers it turned out all had similar experiences. And this person has now been rehired after having beeem employed (and fired from another company in the meantime and quit and run from a contract in a second company). What do you do with such a person? I have already had a serious talk with upper management previously other the person, so is a bit shocked that they have been rehired. And I am sharing an office with the project manager that has been assigned the team member, and after a few days he could also see that this wasn’t working out. After the first day, the project manager, actually applauded the new team member to me while we we alone. The team member comes across as a very motived go getter, but it is all facade. Any ideas? I don’t have any. Except keeping a written diary of our interactions, deadlines etc., so that I have documentation for the lack of performance.

    At 26:00 - Simon answers the question without realizing it - when you are older AND wiser you couldn't care less about what people think of you. You no longer have "oh no, let me take care of you" knee-jerk empathy. You listen strategically with the amount of energy and time you have in ways that won't jeopardize the many (many!) people for whom your continued smooth functioning is necessary for their well-being. Check out how they measured "empathy" in that study. It has many forms, and often, ignoring claims on your attention that will derail you is more empathetic to more people than running to save that kitten... just saying.

    For me it is pleasure and happiness. Pleasure is an outside thing like a new car..something outside us. Happiness is an inside experience that is joyful. Happiness is an in the moment experience. Fulfillment seems deeper and more sustainable but it would seem also evolves. Studies also show that we downplay happiness and discount it as not so important.

    I don't like this interview, particularly because of the interviewer, who like many others, spend so much time talking. I want to watch Simon Sinek speak. Interviewers need to learn to ask good questions and interfere as little as possible.

    I think this interviewer actually brought Simons insight to the forefront. Actually I want to know who he is. If you want to watch just Simon there are plenty around

    Hi. 🙂 Please, let us pray together. Dear God who art in heaven hallow be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus Christ's name we pray amen.
