Start with Why - Simon Sinek at USI

Ғылым және технология

Information and subscription on www.usievents.com
In his talk, Simon Sinek, consultant and author, explain the emergency for companies and organizations to wonder “why”: why, fundamentally, did they build up themselves, why do they exist and which are the values in which they believe? Because those believes are arguments, it can be shared to employees and clients and become lever of membership. Each compnay owns a combination of three strategic compnants: why they exist (“Why”), how they to business (“How”) and what are its products and services (“What”). The specificity of this mix, if the company succeeds in expressing it, become its strength. Companies that understood this approach of leadership are more innovatives and more long-lasting than the others, including in the IT sector.
Simon Sinek first started to work in the communication and advertising sector. He published its best-seller Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action in 2009. Its second best-seller “Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t…” was published in 2014.
This talk will give you all keys you need to understand how companies are able to repeat their successes over and over.

First of all, you can trust me because I love his way of thinking and talks too -which makes us at the same team :D But it's very interesting that I felt pretty disappointed after finding out that what you think is not the case. I was also admiring his passion and speaking abilities without need of anything BUT if you just watch his other talks on here youtube, you'll see that he almost always uses the exact same sentences, same examples and even same jokes. It's clear that he did memorize his talk texts. Just like most of stand-up comedians he's loyal to text but sometimes improvises. Yea, I know it doesn't change the fact that he is a great speaker and he does believe what says. I just wanted to share my feelings after realizing this :/ he is not perfect like no one.

When they were taken from their families, they lost their belonging and this has had such a domino effect over the years. Feeling as you belong is so much more powerful than many realise. Thank you for sharing your work. Stay safe and keep taking care of you, Natalie

Love the bit right near the end (58:37 onwards): to be like someone very young taking risks because they don't see the later risks, or like someone old who doesn't care about what people think. I'm in my early fifties and getting like the latter. The bit in the middle (worrying about everything and everybody) is the real curse.

2013 Simon has an incredible way of explaining why people do what they do when it cannot be put into words. It gives me a vision of what is truly occurring. Skip forward to 2020 the principles are still the same except there are so many more people considering mortality, "what would I do if I only had some much time left?" As I watch society, I see how people become desensitized to the risks of this ChinaVirus and risk more to go back to the way they lived with freedoms that were taken for granted that are now so precious. Maybe people will appreciate what they had and for the few visionaries, it will drive them to create innovation that will change the world for the next 50 years. New leadership, new culture, a new way of living with what's fundamentally more important that just things, purpose (our why).

Thank you for your interesting presentation. WHY do the "Practical" dismiss The Intuitive as "Dreamers"? While the Practical are a blessing for day to day Tangible duties, to "See" the Possible before it has been discovered, is the Gift of Intuition. When both, ie, Practical and Intuitive live/work in harmony, the end result is Mind Boggling; think Apple. But, when a successful enterprise is taken over by the "Bean Counters," look out! For, the resulting Market Void will likely be filled by the Practical and Intuitive in other companies; the ones who live/work Harmoniously. However, as "Consumer Bean Counters" tend to lack an "Eye for quality," they ask "WHY pay so much"? This is WHY there'll always be a market for "Bean Counters." ;-)

Actually, there is a word for Why: it's called the mission statement. It's printed on a variety of products by brands that want to tell people what they believe. I'm a little surprised that he understands strategy and doesn't know the term mission statement or objective. It most definitely exists. I disagree that tactic is something separate from strategy. Those are interchangeable. The What is execution or product, which is essentially the concrete manifestation of the How. In psychology, this equates to Behavior, while the Why and How equates to Cognition. Or you could even separate that and say the Why is ingrained in the Affect. So the Golden Circle is just the ABC of psychology arranged in a different context.

  • @edrosman

Actually, a Mission Statement is equivalent to a "How" where as the "Why" is equivalent to a Purpose. There are typically many Mission Statements that meet our Purpose but we only have a single Purpose.

What Is Salvation? Everyone experiences pain in their lifetime. No one asks to be hurt. Yet pain is commonplace in our lives. Our pain is the direct result of sin in the world. It is because of that sin that we experience pain and are separated from God. However, there is still hope for us and that hope is through Jesus Christ. God came down from heaven as the man Jesus; lived a perfect life, and then died an innocent death on the cross so that we could live a free and unencumbered life with Him.

Well there are people that are focused on the what and some on the how and the others on the why. Frankly speaking i wouldn't buy an apple product because they challenge the status quo. People buy something if the reason of WHY is for the sake of them. Even knowing why and explaining it, it would not make others buy the product only if that reason it has something to do with them. I think that what he says is true but also in many points he contradicts himself. Those who are focused on the ''What'' are those that are looking for a good Price. I think when we explain to others about the WHAT in business there should be included the price, which he doesn't mention. Depends who your target market is. Apple's case i think they aimed for the rich class those who are not influenced by the price, the what. Those don't look on the price but on the WHY because that is the thing that thy look at i think. And that is why apple had to clarify the why. What if there is another company that has the same Why? Challenge the status quo. Does it mean that the would sell as apple? Than i guess people would focus on the HOW and What. I think that Why is important but but won't necessary make you sell. At the and the difference is if the WHY, HOW , WHAT you do is for the others. If people have a feeling that the reason we do it, the way we do it and what we had done is for them then they will buy it. On the other hand why on earth would i hire someone form my community that has no experience as a babysitter against someone that i don't know "why" she is doing or where comes from as a babysitter but has 10 years of experience. The fact that has 10 years babysitter(the WHAT result) means it trustworthy and that is good at it because it has been doing until now. I still think his presentation is good and also the example with the sailing boat to explain leadership was awesome because it showed that what people really care is if what we do is for them. +Alonso Ahmetaj I understand your point, and I think that it fits with what Simon Sinek says about the different types of customers: the early adopters, who help you to get into market with a significant customer base, are motivated by the spirit they share with you. Therefore, knowing why you do something, the values your activity is based on, will create the link with these early adopters. Apparently (I might be wrong), your profile makes you mostly belonging to the other group of customers: you buy something when it has been proven by others that this stuff is good, works well, and offers the best for a right price. You are not driven by the "Why" as much as the early adopters, but you wouldn't probably be one of the first customers of a new product, because you don't know if this product is worth being bought until other people have demonstrated that it is. As for myself, I have been an "Apple fan" for many years, mostly when my relatives were pushing me, asking why I was still buying computers from a company that was expected to disappear. Probably, my deep feeling, was that they were mavericks in the system, which I used to agree with. I'm still big fan of their computers, because, yes, at the end of the day, they deliver high quality, nice design, and wonderful user interface. Do I have an iPhone? No, and I would not definitely wait for hours to buy one. I have a BlackBerry, because they are the new mavericks in the phone business, and yes, their phones are well designed, high quality, and with a wonderful user interface... Besides, when the Company knows "why" they are doing something, customers who share the same feeling, are more loyal. It's not a selling trick: you cannot fake what you think for too long; people will notice. As an entrepreneur launching a new product/business, Simon Sinek explains that you must target the early adopters, who are more motivated by the "why you are doing it", because those who are motivated by the "what you do", will never buy your product until it has been "validated/approved" by the early adopters. Best Eric

+Eric Prouzet Yeah it is true about the different stages of customers, and that the early adopters (those who are more feeling centered) are focused on the WHY (which sometimes is about the what kkk) and the other people consider mostly the WHAT that is a difference on people's personality and character. But what i meant is that knowing Why is not going to make others buy the product, we need to know what our Why means to the other people. At the end the Why should be for the sake of others. And it should not be separated, maybe the Why and What and How should be together in one product, to ideal maybe. I just felt that he was emphasizing the Why only but apparently is not so. That is just the feeling i got first. Me? I think that i am an early adopter and also the one that waits the other buy first when i am not sure what the product is. Because i want to see how they show the why. Anyway i am not the person that waits others to buy it first because i can go directly to the shop once the product comes our or i can see the first review given at the presentation at the apple presentation i guess. But i wouldn't buy if the why doesn't match with the what or vice versa. Anyway thank u for sharing your idea it was helpful to see that Simon is not speaking only about the Why because that is the feeling i got from him , as everyone is about the WHY. I also mentioned above : " Apple's case i think they aimed for the rich class those who are not influenced by the price, the what. Those don't look on the price but on the WHY because that is the thing that thy look at i think." which i realized that it could also be the opposite as some people's WHY is about the price the WHAT....they recognize Apple's product as something precious because of the price or want to show people that they are rich class. If there is another viewpoint let me know i am thankful and happy to learn through productive comments.

I'mm definitively not the spokeman of Simon Sinek. He certainly doesn't need me. I can only tell you what I understand, from his videos and his book. The difference between companies like Apple and others, is Apple was founded with a belief, by the two founders, that computers had to obey some rules in power and design, in order to make people's life easier. This is "why" they started to make the type of computers they have made for a while, and why the others didn't (they thought that a PC is a tool, which must contain the components required to deliver a correct power over cost ratio. So, the "notion of why" is not a marketing trick. It is what defines the way you conduct your activity (why are you doing what you do?). It doesn't define the activity itself (Apple is not different because they build computers). But this is not a marketing message (what should we claim to attract the early adopters?). Let's say that you sell pizzas in a truck. You are not the only one to do it, and you can sell them by making them either bigger, or cheaper than the competition. You can also think that it's not a reason because people are in rush for the lunch break, that they should eat junk food. What you "believe", is that healthy and good food is important for a good life. And what you deliver will be pizzas made according to these rules (maybe organic components, less cheese, more vegetables,...). If someone asks you why you do it, you will answer that this is the way you want to do it, because you think that this is important. This is your Why. If someone wants to invest in your pizza truck, help you to have more trucks, but at the cost of making pizzas different from your standards, you will refuse the offer, because it doesn't fit with the reason why you do it, it doesn't feel "right". When customers in the street come to check the new truck in town, you tell them that you make pizzas because pizzas are easy to eat and fast, but you will tell them why your pizzas are different (this is what makes you authentic). If some tell you that they want more cheese, or more fat, you will suggest another truck, those who will come to buy your pizzas are those who think that is not because of the lunch rush that they should eat junk food. So, these people come to you because they agree with the reason why you do the pizzas the way you do it. But you didn't define a marketing operation to attract them. Once your pizzas truck is famous, the other people will come because it will be well known in town that your pizzas are not only healthier, but excellent and no more expensive. Apparently, you belong to the second group of customers, which is perfect. However, if you start a business, you understand that you are not and probably will never be the first group, because you want to compare, so you want to have enough informations ("this pizza truck is excellent, good food, good products, and no more expensive"). What S. Sinek says, it's that you must find (not define) the reason why you are doing what you do, to be sure that you are in line with what you believe. This reason is not negotiable. After, you will define "how" you do it, and the final product will be a reflect of the authenticity of your company, which will attract people who share the same belief (of course, if nobody shares your belief, not good news for starting your business). Here are my thoughts. I'm looking at these concepts because I'm launching a new business, and I find them very convincing (and in line with who I am). Please give me your comments for enriching this discussion. Best
