Lead/Leash manners - Teaching a Prey Driven Dog to Recall. Video 7.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I focus on the lead training for this lovely, lively prey driven dog.
Why?
Because lead training MUST be incorporated into recall training. It MUST come first.
Why?
Because a dog that won't listen to you at the end of a lead certainly won't listen to you when she's on the scent of another animal and chasing!
For this dog the lead or leash training was taught with a combination of negative and positive reinforcement.
What the heck does that mean?!
Essentially, having been taught beforehand that her own behaviour could remove the annoyance of the electronic collar, when she moved beyond my left leg, the 'immediate' tightness of the slip-lead (she came with that) was followed immediately by the appropriate level of stimulation on the electronic collar, at which point I had already turned and begun to walk in the opposite direction. Bothe the stimulation of the collar and the physical pressure of the slip lead were instantly removed when she turned.
**This part is VERY important to bare in mind when watching this video .. The dog came to me with a pre-existing problem behaviour - she would run away from the slip lead when she saw it, whether at the start or the end of the walk. This shouldn't make sense right? Why would a lead that comes before going for a walk be something to avoid? The first thought is that she found it unpleasant (aversive) - yet she would perfectly happily pull like a steam train when wearing the lead to the point of rasping and almost choking herself!
Whatever the reason for the bad association, you can still see shadows of it in points during this video. Further conditioning work will dramatically reduce this 'leash avoidance' behaviour.
So here we see a dog with zero lead skills, a dog that would automatically lunge and pull like crazy, progressing to multiple handlers, zero corrections, zero treats and zero commands - in under 2 weeks!
Then we have the final part of the video!! ... A COMPLETELY unique test of her understanding and handler confidence!! I have never seen this shown before!!
Video 8 will show it in full!!!
Please stay following and be sure to subscribe to my channel!
Thanks all!
Jamie

    That's how I feel too, and it's that point I've sought to reach with my dogs. When you get there, it is the best feeling in the world and touches you on a really primal level. Being at one with a dog is a true privilege in life.

    OK,; this is great, but HOW do we train the dog to recall to the whistle?? They don't return automatically when they hear the whistle without being trained to it, do they? And with the 'heel' command, you've shown us the result but not how to accomplish it.

    Hey Jamie, just came across your videos and there are so many gem nuggets of info! Thank you! I’ve been working recall similar to how you instruct. Curious, what’s kind of time frame I should have in mind for working through recall as prey drive activation kicks in? I try to get my Vizsla’s attention before being activated but it’s tough. I know it will take time but a sense of how much training goes into this will help me relax into the work. The biggest challenge we’re building up to is freedom to be off leash. I know we need the fundamentals down on a long lead before we even consider the latter. He’s got great recall with no distractions which feels like a solid base to keep building off of. Thanks in advance for any input!

    Hi Jamie, this gives me hope with my GSD! Did this dog have any sort of reactivity to other dogs at all?

  • @JamiePenrithDogTraining

    @JamiePenrithDogTraining

    2 жыл бұрын

    No, but I’d say 75% of GSD’s do - more on than off lead. I believe it’s a mixture of breeding and breed. It’s VERY common within GSD’s. Very rarely - if ever - can it be traced to a traumatic early event or improper exposure. GSD’s tend to grow into it. Firm obedience is a very productive way to handle the behaviour. Focus on teaching what you expect without compromise, then the dog has a productive alternative to explosive outbursts on the lead.

    for the last part with lead walking and heel work: my boys nose is almost always in the ground, I ask him to "walk nice at my side" for short bits but he is always unhappy with it and prefers walking and smelling the ground rather than walk with me, how do I work on getting that attention and calm? is it possible with intact male dogs as well, we live in suburbia/city and there a lot of dogs/smells everywhere we walk

    What are your thoughts on Hunting Together! Predation Substitute Training by Simone Mueller. Is this an effective substitute and is this as reliable as the ecollar?

  • @JamiePenrithDogTraining

    @JamiePenrithDogTraining

    2 жыл бұрын

    I guess the answer to that is to ask Simone to take a dog with a very high prey drive and rehearsal history, take it into a live environment without tools, treats, toys or restraints, allow the dog to run perfectly free and recall every time - within 3 weeks. That would give you the best answer!

    @@JamiePenrithDogTraining she would say she would put the dog on a lead around sheep. That it’s irresponsible owners. It’s a choice she makes that easier to live with.

  • @JamiePenrithDogTraining

    @JamiePenrithDogTraining

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@lodgehousestudio6219 I would also put a dog on a lead when in known, immediate proximity to sheep. The difference is, my decision is a responsible choice, not an irresponsible necessity. I choose to train avoidance towards sheep rather than put all my faith in a restraint. What constitutes ’around sheep’ for an animal with the ability to know of their presence LONG before you do? What of dogs that chase and kill deer, cats, foxes or birds; dogs that take off after them the moment they detect them? How is an owner to know that they are ‘around’ or ‘near’ these animals? I hear too many excuses for inadequate training from trainers who ought to state to owners from the outset - ‘This won’t actually work in reality’. Instead, they sell hope and pedal false belief. That to me is both irresponsible and unethical. It’s a little like saying, ‘why wear a seatbelt if you intend to drive slowly?’ To which the answer is, ‘why wouldn’t you?’
