Le Mans: the Porsche Success Story - Episode 5

1998 was a landmark year for Porsche. The company celebrated its golden jubilee with its 16th overall win at Le Mans, but did so just a few months after the death of the great Ferry Porsche. The triumphant car, the 911 GT1 ’98, was special in many ways, as legendary race engineer, Norbert Singer, explains. State of the art at the time, it featured a Porsche first - a carbon fibre monocoque frame.
In this Porsche Moments at Le Mans episode, Timo Bernhard, a 2017 Le Mans champion, gets a tour of the 911 GT1 ’98 with Norbert as his guide. Timo then takes the car out on the Weissach testing ground to drive the legend itself.

Norbert Singer worked on the 917, the 956 & 962, the 911-GT1 98...all gorgeous, and all successful. What a legend.
Norbert Singer is such a legend, the true Mr. Le Mans ;)

Yes, what a beautiful endurance race car the 911 gt 1 was. Hard to believe this car is 25 yrs. Old . The design so forward thinking the car still looks relevant and modern today!

I remembered this car when I played Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed as a teen. It has the feel of a Le Mans Prototype car but with the performance of an RSR. That car in the game was a Strassenversion with a road-legal steering wheel.

While I always absolutely loved the lines of the 962, this might have been their most beautiful. And livery was their best IMO! Such an amazing car! I still remember watching it dominate at so many tracks...
Saw it (and other lovely machines that will go unnamed) at the season finale at Laguna Seca. Really lovely to see such a swoopy car caress the Corkscrew.

GT1 is missed, and GTE/GTLM will be missed as well. It is crucial that we have a new hyper GT class at some point soon. Maybe Super GT could become a worldwide thing.
