And to be honest, the lawyer succeeded even though he was fined. Many lawyers came out in his support, even the State Supreme Court was split in its decision and he was quite famous for it. Even some judges defended his actions and professors still talked about it in classes so I think he succeeded. He got off his client, that's the first thing a defense lawyer should be concerned about.

@@zimikkachui5766 Would it be worth it however for the lawyer? I suppose it depends on how much he'd been paid for defending his client, he got fined 100$, shame the article doesn't say how much he got paid for defending him.

I wonder how he would react to the case where Phoenix has to speak to a parrot. Scott: "This is totally unrealistic. First of all, the judge would have to seek council with animal services to verify the sanity of the parrot, and how long the parrot has stayed in the country to be able to testify. "The Bird Flu" defense states that the parrot's claims cannot be held in contempt unless it flies away."
I love his hatred of Castle. That was hilarious.

Sentenced to being an ace attorney writer
The Better Call Saul scene was based on something that a lawyer actually did, on the podcast they said they got it when on a call with I believe lawyers or someone who works in law that told them the story of this happening.
What's interesting about the first clip in better call saul is apparently something like that ACTUALLY DID happen in a court room, now if you understand the context in the situation where saul wasn't maybe aiming for an innocent but to waste time for a mistrial. The original case that did this also left in a mistrial so this isn't something the show runners made up, but my main issue is that saul gets no consequence after being taken off for a year prior so he's already on thin ice with him being a lawyer, but who knows you could theoretically come up with a solution that they let it pass by.

The original case I saw ended in a directed verdict of Not Guilty and a sanction against the attorney. Is there a different one?

Just goes to show you, as a lawyer, it's vital to stay up-to-date with court cases so you don't look like a fool for claiming something never happened.
This lawyer points out the fundamentally broken part of the system; It doesnt matter if you are right or wrong, committed a crime or not. All that matters is how good of an attorney you can afford.

Definitely a better option than Penny (an actress) not being able to memorize a statement for traffic court on Bug Bang Theory. 😂
"Mr. Darden got a little too cute." ... that's the most generous way of saying it that I've ever heard. Lol
"If it doesn't fit, you must acquit" it was cool to see him break down that choice in OJ's trial. I like that courtroom advice "don't ask a question you don't already know the answer to" because they walked right into that one
So let me get this straight, in the Good Wife clip, you're telling me a judge can just completely ignore the Constitution and there's nothing anyone can do about it?!
@Banned4Life
4 жыл бұрын
That's what caught me off-guard here... It would be fine for a lawyer to be held in contempt, for disagreeing with disregarding the Constitution? Yet the judge can completely violate the Constitutional rights of a witness and it's all dandy?
@BradyPostma
4 жыл бұрын
To punish a judge for violating the Constitution does not happen in that judge's courtroom. It happens in appeals, in the formal complaint system, etc. No criminal is sentenced in their base of power, but in a separate court headed by an impartial judge (ie, not the criminal themselves).

Scott Reisch Crime Talk is the bomb! Vanity Fair should have regular vblogs with Mr. Reisch as this is outstanding.
There is precedent to the Better Call Saul thing though. In 2011, a lawyer showed up to court with the twin brother of his defendent and got scolded by the judge, pretty much like it happened in the scene.
Thank you. I always notice soundtracks, sometimes lighting and exaggerations but never, ever details like this. Eye opening.

Vanity Fair should have a real scientist or lab tech review CSI-style drama series that have the stylish "laboratories" with really dark mood lighting, the latest tech, no bulky old-school hardware, and everybody wearing super-fashionable suits and dresses and choker collars and designer glasses instead of… well, real lab-wear. Then again, maybe a 20+ minute video would get old after the first few minutes when it's absolutely nothing but the real scientist laughing uncontrollably (or just banging their head on the desk).
