Howard is the only one of the main characters to seek out a therapist and work on himself. He doesn't give up on his troubled marriage, he tries to do right by Jimmy and this is how he's rewarded. Homie did NOT deserve that death which makes it all the more shocking.

One of the reasons Jimmy hates Howard is because Howard rectified his inner self and unburdened himself of the guilt of Chuck's death while Jimmy had refused to process those emotions. He hated Howard for not wallowing in self pity and depression anymore.

The writers are really good at taking two seemingly unrelated story elements at the start and building up to an explosive clash between the two later on. This death along with Hank's, was the most surprisingly and impactful to me. These are characters that seem like they have the "plot armor", or "main character armor", that you would believe they would never be killed. That is was makes it so impactful seeing these characters die. Especially Howard, since he was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time. I give kudos to all involved in these shows as they really hit you hard, and it's tough (at least for me) to have a show impact you personally.

He manipulated both Chuck and Howard. Steering Howard to make decisions, which Howard knew were not right but felt compelled to go with since he looked up to Chuck as a mentor (mirroring how Jimmy looked up to Chuck).By the time the truth came out, it was hard for Jimmy to see Howard as anything other than Chuck's accomplice, when in reality he had also been used by Chuck.

That episode and the aftermath of Howard's death are so incredibly horrifying and tragic. The show really smacks you in the face with how unrelentingly they show the gut-wrenching consequences of Jimmy and Kim's behavior. When burying Lalo and Howard, Mike Ehrmantraut could care less about Lalo’s body, but he told his lackey’s to take it easy with Howard’s body. He knew Howard wasn’t “in the game” and didn’t deserve what happened to him. Mike always did what he had to, but seemed to always respect and be humane towards the innocents caught up in “the game”.

I really started to identify with Howard during BCS because I also had issues with depression and thinking low of myself. As KIK01 has already mentioned in the comments here, he is the only character in the show who has worked on himself and tried to be a better person and tried to make up for his mistakes. Therefore, Howard is my favourite character on the show and seeing him facing such a terrible fate, broke literally my heart. I cried my eyes out during that episode but nontheless I carry Howards spirit in my heart: debt, depression, relationships falling apart - no matter what you're facing, you'll land on your feet. I think he is a role model to us all ❤ I apologise for my English on this point, I'm from Germany and English is not my mother tongue 😊

Breaking Bad had some of the most intense shocking scenes i’ve ever seen in any film/tv ever, Janes death, Walt running over the killers with his car, the crawl space, the child murder after the train heist, Hank finding out it was Walt all along, the Nazis showing up in the desert, Hanks death, so many scenes where i was literally shouting at the screen, after it ended i thought no other film or show will produce this feeling again where i’m completely on the edge of my seat like i’m actually there with the characters in those intense scenes, and then Better Call Saul came along. I don’t think i’ve ever in my entire life experienced the shock that was seeing Howard get shot in the head, by far the most shocking scene i’ve ever seen in any film or show. It really felt like witnessing a loved one being murdered in front of you, the entire day after i saw this episode i couldn’t get it out my head and how dark and unfair what happened was. It’s crazy that i used to like Lalo in a bad guy but he’s charming kind of way he was fun to watch but after this i never wanted a character to suffer so bad, what a truly evil human being. The writing of this show and Breaking Bad is simply out of this world, the ability to make audiences literally shout at the screen in shock is something unbelievably rare and is a testament to how unbelievably smart they are.

It was the same for me! Jaw dropped and speechless after Lalo shot Howard. And was still thinking about it at my workplace the next morning. Same with Nacho's death. Although, Howards death was more shocking, Nacho's death hit me too.

The day after that episode I told my girlfriend I had witnessed the most shocking scene I had ever viewed on TV. That gun went off and I said "holy shit!" so loud I thought I had woke her up. What a scene, just outstanding. And Lalo, what a joy to watch. On the most recent episode of Talking Saul Gould or Gilligan said that Lalo was the happiest character on BCS. Which is true. None of the other individuals in BSC showed joy...but Lalo, that dude was cheerful. Best writing on TV since Mad Men (IMO). Rivals Mad Men.

As much as it must suck to know your character will die and you won't get a chance to play him anymore, it's gotta be worth something to know that the tragedy of your character's death will end up being one of the most harrowing, meaningful, memorable, and talked about moments of the entire show. Talk about going out with a bang. You never fully appreciate the Howard you have until you lose him.

honestly this is an example of how a good death can be good for an actor. howard's character had been sort of lingering after the chuck thing for a while, and that death (along with the scam) cemented him as one of the best characters in the show, and fabian as an incredible actor. if howard had just sort of hung around after the scam being depressed, nobody would really be talking about howard hamlin
