#dendrobium #latouria #dendrobiumorchid
Latouria Dendrobiums are a captivating group of orchids that offer unique challenges and rewards. I’ll be taking a deep dive into the fascinating world of Latouria type Dendrobiums. These unique orchids hail from regions like The Philippines, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and surrounding islands. Prepare for an exciting journey through their natural habitat and discover essential care tips for these captivating plants.
Latouria Dendrobium Characteristics and Identification
Latouria Dendrobiums are easily identifiable by their distinctive pseudobulbs and varying leaf textures. They feature slender bases and balloon-like upper sections, topped with leaves that range from dark green, leathery types to lighter, less flexible ones. These attributes make them interesting even when not in bloom.
Blooming Patterns and Floral Characteristics
These Dendrobiums are known for their striking, often funky blooms. Flowers can be twisted and tentacle-like or more delicate and elegant. The blooms typically hang downward, best viewed from below, and have intricate markings that are fascinating to observe.
Natural Habitat and Climate Requirements
In their natural habitat, Latouria Dendrobiums thrive in tropical rainforests at lower elevations. They require high humidity (around 80%) and consistent watering, mimicking the rainforest's year-round rainfall. Ensuring these conditions are met is crucial for their health and flowering.
Potting and Repotting Tips
Use well-draining media like medium bark mixed with sphagnum moss or other water-retentive materials. Avoid letting the media dry out completely, even during cooler conditions. Repot only when new roots are growing to avoid stalling their development.
Light and Temperature Needs
Provide bright, indirect light year-round. In winter, some direct sunlight is acceptable. Pay attention to leaf color to gauge the right light levels; darker leaves tolerate more sun. Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures for optimal growth.
Pest Management and General Care
Watch for pests like thrips and aphids, especially on new growths and blooms. Use treatments like garlic alcohol carefully. Fertilize year-round with a balanced orchid fertilizer, focusing on calcium supplements during new growth phases. #orchid #orchidcare #orchideen #orchideenpflege #orquideas #tips #tricks #tipsandtricks #repotting #care #tutorial

Speaking of Dens in their natural habitat. My partner is currently on a job in one of our dense rainforests (Naturally pumpied water from river to flower bed). He rested on a tree branch, part of which fell at his feet - it had a baby airplant AND a few orchids attached!! Wild orchids no doubt, which he brought to me. Alas I am unable to ID it, as the blooms were faded and dried out. Needless to express my utter delight, and excitement, I promptly put the branch where I hope it can still adapt to its natural environment (outdoors with my other "outdoor" orchids). I am dying for it to bloom again, so I could ID it. From the leaves, it seems to be an epidendrum. 🤩🤞🤞💃💃🤩 ... still following you!

Your intro which focused on the habitat for this type of orchid was a great idea! Your video considers all of the factors associated with the Latourias. So glad to hear you mention the Roy Tokunaga because I have one in my collection. Appreciated your comments on the fragile roots on this orchid. Perhaps it needs to be repotted into small lava rock. I tend to prefer the smaller varieties of Latourias like Chocolate Chip and Mini Snowflake, but don't have any in my collection at this time. (It's been unusually rainy here lately. Last week we were hearing reports of being in a drought here in south Florida. The past 2 days our area has had over 13 inches of rainfall. I brought my Den. dearei indoors in order to protect the buds from too much moisture. I want to be able to enjoy its first-time flowering for me.) I'll probably have to check for fungus after all this rain. Thank you for your contributions of your wonderful videos for the orchid communities worldwide. May you have a GREAT day and FANTASTIC weekend.

Unfortunately, actually getting to do it, for real, is a thing of the past, so I pretend 😆 and I am glad that you could pretend with me and enjoyed the description! Thank you for letting me know 🫶🏼 I love the little ones that I see available in the US... they are darling! Back in the day I was looking for a Micro Chip here, but never found one. Still, to see them in other collections is almost just as nice! I heard about the amount of rain parts of FL got and you did the right thing to bring your dearei inside! After all, we want the blooms and if at all possible, then protecting them is priority! I appreciate your time watching, thank you so much lovely lady! In the footage of this video, I shared the blooming I had when I could provide light and heat during the winter, and the blooming that I filmed was in April, after it was already blooming since end January of that year. Crazy!! The blooms look so fresh after all that time. LOVE it and I hope that I can save my Roy Tokunaga! It really sucks that this orchid grows new roots during a time of year when we are just coming out of the cold, but are not quite warm enough yet, still, I have to get it into lava rock by late winter 2025. @NinjaOrchids

HI Annavoeg 😍❤️ thank YOU so much for watching! I love all the Chip hybrids! I think that they are so wonderful ... so giving! The dark spots on the leaves could be because of low humidity. I know it sounds reversed from what we know about black spots and high humidity, but these guys are rarely exposed to humidity levels less than 80%. If possible, raise the humidity around the orchid and to stop anything from becoming an issue, wipe the leaves with hydrogen peroxide to stop any potential spores from spreading around. I hope that it is only an interim issue that could have happened when the orchid was being moved around before she reached you and perhaps is just adapting to your environment. Let me know how things go and if you have any further concerns! Have a beautiful Saturday, lovely lady! 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hello, thank you so much for posting your video. I love latouria type dendrobiums since I first saw them in Hawaii. But I have not had much success growing them in southern Texas. You've mentioned that it's easy for them to grow roots but mine doesn't put out new roots for some reason. The most recent one I have is Roy Tokunaga with pretty big pink flowers a year ago. After the bloom faded, I waited until winter time to repot it and kept it indoors. It kept putting out new growths but refused to put out new roots. Since after repotting it in leca with some bark chips on the top layer with sphagnum moss around the base of the new growths about 8 months ago, it has put out about 4-5 new growths sequentially but 2 of them somehow rotted at a very early stage. 2 of them has grown up successfully and put out new leaves however the size of the growth are smaller than the parents. It's putting out another new growth right now. But all this time, there are not new root growth so I'm very worried. The older canes have shrunk. I believe the old root ball has no more living roots. It's now outdoor in bright shade in summer time. Do you have any suggestions what I can do to induce root growth? I have it in leca in a ceramic pot. Should I switch it to a plastic pot? Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

    Ай бұрын

Hi!! 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, for watching and your kind feedback regarding this video. I very much appreciate it 🫶🏼 Ahhhh yes... Dear Roy Tokunaga! The problem child 🫣 I am sorry that you are having similar struggles... I know it, you saw it! I am going to break down your comment in stages, so having sphagnum moss around the base, may have cancelled out the 2 growths IF the moss was damp too long, touched the new growths and for some reason, right at that area, there wasn't enough airflow. Weird, I know, but the new growths of Roy Tokunagas are tender. They are not as robust in their make up as other Latouria dens. You Roy is fighting to survive, because getting a new growth this time of year is unusual, so, as you have the orchid outside, I suggest that you place the pot in a mask and keep the mask with an inch of water at the bottom at all times. Do not water from above, the new growth needs to make it. Please, at this stage, do not fertilize, because your intuition is probably correct ... the roots in the pot are not viable anymore. I have some questions that you can consider for what you would like to do, one of them being, how windy can it get where you are... if it gets very windy and very hot, the orchid has to come inside so as to not loose moisture through the leaves. At this stage, it is fundamental to protect the orchid from further decline. I used to live in Dallas, not as humid up there as in the south, but it sure was very very windy and that can suck the moisture out of anything.... including a stressed orchid. Right now, your Roy cannot handle the conditions she would normally be able to handle if she were growing well. Reduce everything by 50% when it comes light exposure and keep her a protected from the heat she would normally be able to endure. At this stage, I do not recommend switching your orchid to a plastic pot, just keep water consistently available at the bottom of the pot. Even if the roots are not viable, the humidity level around the orchid needs to be raised. Until your new growth has not leafed out, it will not grow new roots. Older growths that have not produced roots MAY start new roots if there is more humidity coming from the bottom of the pot. I hope that I am explaining myself in an understandable way 🤞🏼 please let me know if you have any further questions. The more I know about your conditions the better. In the meantime, I wish you a great Saturday and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Thank you so much for your quick, detailed and kind reply! I really appreciate it. I am not very active on social media usually but I would do what I can when it comes to saving my orchids. I was searching for videos about latourias and found that yours was most comprehensive and you shared some examples of orchids not doing well. That's much more helpful than some other videos I came across showing only the successful examples and how easy it is to grow them. So I really appreciate your video and your suggestions. After reading your advice, I plan to move my Roy tokunaga indoors to give it time to recover and grow roots. It's not windy here and humidity is usually pretty high outdoors. But the summer heat has not reached its peak yet. The next two months would get worse up to 100F. The new growth may be susceptible to rotting. So, when I move it indoor, do you recommend removing the moss and top dressing of bark chips and replacing them completely with leca? also, should the medium (whatever it is, leca, moss or bark) be touching the base of the new growth or should I leave some space between? I'm also worried that there aren't enough air circulation indoor but I'll use the fan to help. Please lemme know too if you have any other suggestions which may help! Thank you again.

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    Ай бұрын

I am glad that you commented and that I could give you some pointers to help out with the 🤞🏼 recovery of your Roy! Leave the top dressing as is, but ensure that nothing is touching the base of the rhizome. Have it circled around the surface, but away from the all the growths. If using the fan, just keep it on low and not consistently pointing at the orchid. Just a little breeze every once in a while to keep the air moving. We need your Roy to have a humid micro climate around the leaves, and too much airflow will also stop that from happening 🫶🏼 hope you are having a great Sunday and well, at any given point in time, if you have any questions, ask ... no matter if the video has anything to do with your question. 💪🏼 I hope to be able to hear that you Roy is going to be ok 🤞🏼

I just have a hard time liking this group, other than spectabile v. aureum. I know many of them smell nice but so many of them have spots and, even those that don't, I just don't like the shape. I've got a micro chip that was sent to me as a free gift and it grows and blooms just fine but I just can't bring myself to even like it.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 and that is why I love you!! Here you are, watching and commenting, even when it comes to a group of orchids that just don't do it for you! 🥲 thank you so so much! I was looking for a Micro Chip back in 2018 when I got my Lutin Blanc, but could not find any available. I find them totally adorable and would take that off you in a heart beat!! Still, at least she graces you with blooms... that is better than having an orchid one is not too keen on, and it just won't bloom 😬 hope your day is going beautifully for you and that no creatures have come out of the swamp 🤞🏼 thank you so much for watching, my friend ❤️🌸
