Latin & Greek Loanwords in Arabic [EN Subs] | كلمات عربية مستعارة من اللاتينية واليونانية
The video is recorded in Lebanese Arabic, my dialect. I hereby invite you to activate the English subtitles by clicking on the Settings button - Subtitles - English.
Latin loanwords entered the Arabic language during the seven centuries or so which elapsed between the Roman conquest of Bilād aš-Šām in 63 B.C.E. and its subsequent conquest by the Arabs in the 630s C.E. The area extended from the Euphrates River or the Amanus Mountains in the north to the Sinai Peninsula in the south. Roman rule in this area was preceded by some three centuries of a Macedonian presence, initiated by the conquests of Alexander the Great.
We know that Latin has given thousands upon thousands of words to all Romance languages, as well as Slavic, Germanic, and some other language families. But Arabic?
Let's have a look at this video to see some Latin loanwords that entered the Arabic language.
In the first part of the video, I have gathered some Arabic words that were borrowed directly from Latin (35 words). In the second part, I go through some Arabic words that derived originally from ancient Greek, Syriac/Aramaic, or even Phoenecian, passing through Latin. (30 words).

I just saw the video, and when you mentioned سرقسطة I was shocked before you say that it means Zaragoza and it comes from Julius Caesar, and that's why: in greek we have a religious orthodox thing called 'sarakosti' and is actually a fasting period of 40 days. Now, in Russian, where they also practice eastern orthodoxy, they have the same fasting period, and in russian language the word 'sarak' in the beginning is the number 40 (сорок - sounds like 'sorak' because when the O is not toned it's sounds like a)! So, I never thought I could find (or hear) the same world in a totally different perspective! Salutations from Greece

Very interesting video and it's also interesting that some words in Greek that are borrowed from Latin also were borrowed in Arabic... For example in Greek we also say φούρνος (furnos) and φράουλα (fraula)... I would just have preferred it, if you had added meaning to all those words in the video but still I think I understood most of them 😅

Lebanese accent and to some extent has little to do with Arabic accent especially for some words like you mentioned and I quote "قسطل" the reason is that the correct Arabic Native expression for "قسطل" is "ماسورة" and the pipe is called "انبوب" and they are originally called and referred to as a system and it is called "دورة المياة" and this includes heavy water cycle. The origins of this goes back to Baghdad city and other cities around it. However, Baghdad had a complete system. Qandela is actually called "سراج" There are other words that are actually not Arabic such as Cup "كوب" or "كباية" and the correct expression ins Native Arabic is "قدح" Other words have Native Arabic words that you do not know simply because you are not well into the Proper Arabic Langiage. Many words spoken I Lebanon that are not originally Arabic simply because many Lebanese are not Arabs. Never matter, we are belong to "نبي الله نوح"
Interesting!!!

Because these words are attested long before Arabic was written and are connected with other words through etymological proof. Like siraat from strada (or strata). And strada means it is made out of layers (strata).

Very nice my sweetheart
Actually we don't have to explain the shift from intitial v in Latin to initial b in Arabic by the lack of v in Arabic. Actually we can explain that shift perfectly well by Latin phonology alone: There is evidence that from the first century AD onwards in Latin there was a development similar to (or the origin of) what happend in spanish with b's and b's. Meaning that in some posititions (like at the beginning of the word) v seems to be pronounced as b.

@@mtblp7459 no. ð' is another proper prononication but for ض, it can made with the upper teeth either fricked (ð') or stopped (in this case d'). S (ظ) can also be made up with the upper teeth (ð'), if so, it must always be fricked and the (ض) must then respectively become stopped (ď). If (ظ) however is made with the lowerlips (v‘), becoming like a hard Russian V, then ض can be pronounced however, although stopping is preferred usually. You learn this in تلاوة or Quranic recitation

The assumption that all Iranic loan words in Arabic come from Persian is laughable! I’ll give an example to prove my point: جناح is an Arabic Loanword that came from Middle PARTHIAN Gunāh meaning ‘blame’, ‘sin’ - or less commonly, ‘Innocent’ (ironically enough) I think there is an inadequate acknowledgment that Parthian denominated old Iran, and it was only until just before the rise of Islam that Persian grew substantially.
العربية جاية من الاراميك والسترات والسراط is two different things
With taurus I would say it is sure that Latin and Greek did get it from semitic languages and not the other way around. The word is a common word in semitic languages even before there was any latin influence on them. For example the Hebrew word for ox שׁוֹר (Shor) appears in the Hebrew bible, at a time when there wasn't any latin influence on Hebrew. Cognates appear in many semitic languages with the consonant shifts that happen in semitic languages which would not happen when it would be a loan word. For example there is: Akkadian: 𒋗𒌑𒊒 (šūrum); Hebrew: שׁוֹר (šōr); Phoenician: 𐤔𐤓 (šr /šōr/); Ugaritic: 𐎘𐎗 (ṯr); Aramaic: תורא (tawrā) / ܬܘܪܐ (tawrā); Tigrinya: ሶር (sor); Sabaean: rwṯ 𐩻𐩥𐩧 (ṯwr), rṯ 𐩻𐩧 (ṯr); Ge'ez: ሶር (sor) and arabic ثَوْر. The protosemitc word is usually reconstructed as *ṯawr.
