    One time, like 12 years ago, I was at a concert, the elementary school kids were playing some funny pieces like Joplin at orchestra. When orchestra got on a stage, violinists were "shrinking" the space between sits for the choir... and they pushed themselves to the stage's edge. One poor girl violinist when sitting on her chair flipped off... and she landed like 1.5m below outside the stage. She held the violin and her bow up high in the air so only her body got hurt... #truemusician

    Here is what Mutter said herself concerning the incident: „That happened to me in Australia. When I made my debut in Sydney. A conductor who‘s always conducting with a huge amount of energy - sadly to much energy - hit my left hand, the one holding the violin, and my violin flew like a propellor through the air behind my back. It was like a horrifying slow motion from a movie. It then hit the ground. Luckily it fell onto it‘s side and not onto it‘s back or the front where the bridge is... to make a long story short... astonishingly the fall didn‘t cause any damage to the violin“ Source: (translated from german) Blaue Couch, Bayern 1

    I think the reason why the harpist flinched so hard is that he might've thought one of the higher strings snapped and obviously protected his face. You know, those in the lower range are usually not supposed to break this way ahah.

  • @JennaHuntMusic

    @JennaHuntMusic

    3 жыл бұрын

    The sound alone is unexpected, which is why he flinched. If you’ve ever heard a bass wire break, you would know. Also, it can be very dangerous when a bass wire breaks. There’s literally tens of pounds of pressure on the string, which can cause it to fling and slice open skin or even poke out an eye.

    @@nodezsh I posted a comment below this about a time my professor was playing a concert, and one of her bass wires snapped, flung forward, and sliced the back of a violist's bald head. I flinched so fucking hard when the harp string snapped. I’m an archer and the coaches always tell beginners horror stories about people snapping their bows and injuring or blinding themselves or others near them as a warning about being reckless and not checking your equipment regularly. One time we were shooting in a canyon on a hunting training range and someone spectating stepped on a stick while the archers on the line were at full draw (as in arrow loaded, pulled back and ready to release) and everyone just let go, ducked, covered and scattered cause we thought it was someone’s bow snapping but we didn’t know who to dive away from. It was literally like watching a flock of pigeons scatter.

    I’m a harpist. When bass wires break, which is somewhat rare, the sound is compared to a gun shot. My professor told me a story of one of her bass wires breaking during a concert, and it flung forward slicing open the back of a violist’s head who was sitting in front of her. The conductor, who was apparently kind of a jerk, kept going and even gave my professor a dirty look when it snapped as if it was her fault. The piece was a harp feature, and she managed to play the piece without that bass wire, practically saving the concert. She is an absolute beast. I wish I could have seen that performance.

    @@udidnthavetopisssohard We all actually appreciate the viola - including Brett and Eddy. We know that they are important for an orchestra and can sound nice, just like violins can sound bad. We know that violists can play in tune and playing the viola needs practice too. We know that violists aren't stupider or lazier than other people. We know all of this. That is the reason, why I don't have a problem with making viola jokes. Because it is just it: jokes.

    Once, the final years played Carmina Burana in concert. It was fabulous: Great Orchestra, great choir, excellent soloists. They played in the big hall, it was about 500 people in the audience. Finally they played this last powerfull passage of „oh fortuna“. When there was silence after the last fortissimo chord, the drummer dropped his sticks on the timpani. It was so loud and his face turned red like a tomato. And 500 people bursted into laugher. That was unforgettable 😎

    Hey, some people DO get tension while holding their violins because of fear of dropping them. When I bought my forever violin, I could hardly play it for any time at all, because I'd get so tense. Finally realized it was because I was worried about dropping it, partially because it was old and expensive, but also because it was so much lighter than my previous instrument, I didn't feel very secure holding it. Changing my setup definitely helped, but the fear was a big part.

    2:07 - And now we venture into the land of "You get triggered, you lose", with proffessor Eddy :P. 3:19 - For scientific (and evil) purposes, I sort of understand the idea of testing how much the violin can resist a fall (some people do it with phones). Not the most pretty way to treat the instrument, of course; but sometimes (very few times) the knowledge might be useful. Out of that, the guy's script needs to be verified. 4:35 - The worst part for me, after watching the clip a couple of times, is that you can see when she realizes she is not going to make it. And then the violin drops (I guess this is one of those times where the perfomer could need the knowledge of how much beating the instrument can take... not that it helps much with that horrible feeling of just having dropped it, though). 5:10 - The musician's reaction is priceless. Of course that comes after the realization that there are no damages to his person XD. 5:55 - The instrument said: "My planet needs me!" :P. 7:56 - "Ja... It can take it". Just kidding; but sounds that someone has nerves of steel and/or some confidence/knowledge of what that particular instrument can take (allegedly). 8:57 - Not related to classical music, but in one concert of a mexican band called Maná the singer pulled the same trick twice in the same song. Be safe, performers: know your stage. And that's all; excellent video :). Hope you later enjoyed the liters of bubble tea won in this episode :).

    For the first clip, I 100% agree with the guy that not wanting to drop the violin is a huge contributor to excess neck/shoulder tension. A lot of teachers don't bother about younger student's set-up especially, so my experience in middle and high school was always feeling I was about to drop the instrument while also being told to stop squeezing my shoulder up. After a several year switch to only cello where I learned about proper body mechanics, I have just recently come back to violin but this time the first thing I did was research and try out chin rests until I found one that's taller and works for me, in combination with shoulder rest size and placement. But from my previous experience I had to re-train myself to let go of tension and trust my adjusted set-up to keep the violin in it's place.

    I think for the first clip, the guy was referring to beginners or more specifically young beginners (3, 4, 5 years old). In that context I think what he said was pretty valid, because when I was that age I remember being really scared to drop my violin. I really had to work hard to stop my left hand from squeezing and my neck being tense.. not a good reason to drop a violin like that, but.. you know.. Anyways, thanks so much @twosetviolin for making these great videos! Have a great day guys!

    I couldn’t stop laughing at the choir. During one of my high school concerts the choir required a clapper and when the time came to use it the senior who used it broke it and swore in front of everyone, but you couldn’t hear it because the song kept going! Everyone around him was laughing and the band (including me) was happy that we would finally get a better one!😂

    I played viola from fourth grade to high school. I had to stop because of terrible neck/shoulder pain. I wish someone had taken the time with me to listen and help fix whatever issue was causing it. I mean I wasn’t that good but a lot of that was because it hurt to practice! I’m living vicariously through you two now. Thanks for the videos. 😊💕

    When I was at a music camp (I play flute) there was a staff performance where all of the professionals and such who were teaching us would play pieces for us. There was a violin cello duet, and this part came along where the cello had the melody and the violin was doing pizzicatos. She went to do another one, and the string snapped. There was an audible gasp from the whole crowd, I think we were all traumatized.

    I mean, it never happened to me but several of my Celloteachers have told HORRIBLE stories of people tripping over instruments, falling on top of them, breaking them and so on...it is kind of unlikely to just DROP a cello for sure though... I once witnessed a guy at a competition, walking up the stairs, to go play his part, tripping on a step, crashing the cello into the stone steps, completely breaking it. don't wanna know how that feels if you have to play after that propably with an instrument that isn't your own... ugh
