I'm assuming she's from Fundie (fundamentalist evangelical) culture. You hear so many testimonies in those churches ("I used to [insert sin] and everything was terrible but then Jesus saved me and now everything is great"). They made me get on a microphone and share my testimony with the other preteens as training for a mission trip to Houston, and I was like 13 and homeschooled so I just talked about my parents' divorce. You have to find some kind of sin or tragedy to talk about, and if you've led a sheltered life sometimes you have to exaggerate.

I was a child who lived with her grandparents and the wildest thing in my life back then was the time I took a detour on my way home from school because I wanted to go buy an empanada.
