@@superbanananinja sure the author's name is Joshua Harris he published a book called "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" in 1997 a few years ago he came out and said that he did not feel that he was a Christian any longer and that he was very sorry because he felt that his book which kick-started Purity culture as we know it today ultimately more than likely harmed quite a few young male and female Christians by causing them to completely surprised you very natural feelings urges Etc but by also forcing them to put so much stock on the idea of Purity and their status is a virgin directly relating to their overall worth as a human being both personally and to others. I do not believe he was doing and started the entire metaphor of comparing a young woman's Virginity to that of a toothbrush ( no one wants to use a used toothbrush essentially, it's truly a lovely sentiment leveled at young girls starting from around the age of 10, to make sure the message really sticks about just how easily they can go from being pure and clean and good to disgusting and gross and covered in icky bacteria ). anyway I'll give you a link for an article to NPR covered about an interview he did with an excellent journalist I believe it it's only a portion of the interview. a documentary was made a few years ago called "I Survived I Kissed Dating Goodbye" is that he was a part of the with the tagline about "how would you feel if at the age of 21 you published a book that changed the way millions of people felt about their sexuality, in a very damaging way". the KZreadr fundie Fridays focuses on aspects of fundamentalist Christianity and while she does talk about purity culture sporadically because it's just weird crops up in that Community, she talks about the lot in one of the videos about gay conversion, if you're interested about learning about a lot of the more obscure aspects of fundamentalist Christianity that you really don't see in mainstream media ( mostly because they don't want to freak people out if there's any chance of potentially converting them later, they also know full well that every year more and more of their practices are considered to be completely out of line by the majority) anyway that's the link to the interview the documentary is available on Amazon I think for a 1.99, the first book is still available although I don't know if it was ever put on e-readers. enjoy, it's a fascinating... if somewhat troubling rabbit hole ! www.npr.org/2019/07/21/743926857/evangelical-writer-who-influenced-purity-culture-announces-separation-from-wife

I was just rewatching this and realized the book the read must be 'I Kissed Dating Goodbye' by Joshua Harris. Fun fact: He deconverted and is no longer Christain. Or married. I think his ex deconverted too. Joshua also apologized to all the people he w his book. Including tons of LGBT+ people, women & girls who had purity culture forced onto them, all the people who lost family/community when they couldn't live up to these crazy standards, and many couples who didn't know they had zero chemistry until after they married. The whole purity culture thing is incredibly disgusting & has hurt so many people. Wonder if Girl Defined will ever apologize for the people they hurt. Doubt it. It definitely is that book. His ex-wife Shannon is on Instagram and has written a book that's being released next year. From what she has said, it sounds like she has been through an experience that resulted in depression, and is currently going through therapy. Purity culture was so damaging and unhealthy. Even if you didn't support the extreme views, it was so far-reaching in Christian circles it was almost impossible to avoid it, with people publishing books about it right, left and centre; Rebecca St James singing 'Wait For Me', Christian rock band BarlowGirl comparing themselves to Sleeping Beauty who is waiting for her prince charming in the song 'Average Girl' ('No more dating/I'm just waiting'), and purity contracts included at the end of Melody Carlson's 'Diary of A Teenage Girl' book series. Fun fact: the BarlowGirl sisters were also big fans of Joshua Harris' book, and they too had a strict no-dating/no kissing philosophy very similar to GD, which shows that actually, GD are not the first to speak out about it. But only one of the 3 BarlowGirl sisters have married, the other 2 are apparently still single, so the no dating thing obviously didn't work out very well for them.

Agreed. When you do it as you naturally feel you want it, it’s usually staggered out. You do all the bases. I’m married now (for 4 years), but I’ve been with my husband since we were 14. It’s so much less intimidating taking things slowly. I can imagine their wedding nights would be full of fear, instead of celebration and relaxation with your new husband. Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with waiting until marriage for kissing, if its what they want to do then so be it, but their approach abt it is so off. They are so focused on the "purity" aspect of Christianity, when its so impossible for us to all be as pure as they want us to be. We saw this same mindset with the types of guy girls shouldn't date, they wanted the perfect man who is so godly and perfect they aren't even allowed to struggle with sin. You’re very right, focusing on purity so much is being religious. Trying to “be so pure” is like tricking yourself into thinking im pure enough to be a good Christian. When no christian will ever be good enough God’s grace is the only thing that will ever be enough to purify us. Just because you’re not intimate with a prospective spouse doesn’t mean you haven’t sinned sexually. Jesus literally says if you lust for someone in your heart you have already sinned. My point is I agree with you!
