Thumbs up ☝ for certain on your race that is kick ass. I believe if you pursued an open wheel career in racing - seen you race like that at 15 or 16 you would get snatched up by Red Bulls development team. develiomentt

I tried to go last to first in my debut Amateur race, first ever wet race, first session on track that weekend. On a motorcycle. It ended with me in the hospital with 3 screws in my hip. I did make it from 8th to 3rd though on lap 4. I even passed my rival and proceeded to crash in an epic fashion on the very next corner. Lesson learned. If you're completely out of your element, just take it easy. Great drive though, and great result.

I love last to first races. Great fun. I always watch those videos. My favorite race of all time of mine was when racing Formula Mazda at Thunder Hill. Started row 2 or 3, don't remember exactly, due to an off in qualifying. At the start I got a good drive into T1 as planned. Unfortunately, the cars in front did not, leaving no room. So lift, and off I go to sit and watch the whole field go by. So I work my way back to a great battle for 2nd that was really fun. Not a 1st, but then, I wasn't going to get 1st anyway even if I hadn't looped it in T1.

I don't want to blow smoke, but that's a stunning piece of driving and really informative commentary. 30 years ago I bought a MK24 Merlyn for the Pre-74 class (£2K from Andrew Stapley) to begin my assault on becoming a winning driver, when my wife was in hospital giving birth to our first son. Fortunately, she was in labour for bloody hours, because Andrew wasn't the easiest of people to negotiate with, but I just had time to nip home and "hide" the car in the garage. And it was pretty much downhill from there... First race was at Donington. I'd only been able to drive the car for about an hour the week before, and that was when the circuit was covered in snow. Come race day, I qualified in xx place, where xx is a high number. I thought I'd take it a bit easy at the start, on the basis that to win races, first you have to finish. Lights went green, and the entire bloody grid disappeared into the distance before I'd dropped the clutch, not helped by massive wheel spin on the only bit of damp tarmac that I'd managed to position the car on... Now, I would love to say that despite this setback I charged through the field to come a creditable 4th. Or 3rd. But that would be untrue! I spent the race toddling around by myself, and apart from the guy who's wheel seemed to have parted company with his car, the entire field lapped me. If I'm honest, I think the winner might have done this twice... To be fair, there were issues with the car. Instead of 1600cc , Mr Stapley seemed to have sold me something with the pulling power of an Austin 1100. With wheels that all pointed in different directions. And an exhaust he'd pinched off his company Cortina. And tyres that must have been used in the inaugural Formula Ford race, with wheels to match. And, and, and.... Towing the car back to Surrey from Donnington in appalling weather after the race in heavy traffic gave me time to think. They were not happy thoughts. Moral was quite low. On the floor. Again, it didn't help that Mr Stapley's bloody trailer seemed to have a mind of it's own over about 45mph. There was one good thing - nobody I knew had witnessed my performance because I'd gone by myself, so total humiliation was only seen by quite a small crowd on the day. When I got home I managed to get the trailer wedged in our drive, which was both narrow and steep. Just as I thought things couldn't get any worse, my neighbours son came out to watch me destroy one side of the drive wall. Seeing a grown man cry is not a pretty thing, so a bit my lip, and this kid of 17 quite politely suggested I might need some help. By now, I'd got the whole car/trailer debacle wedged into a seemingly irrecoverable position, ruling out use of car, trailer and Merlyn ever again, plus use of the drive to access the house. In fairness to my wife, when she came home with our new baby boy, when she saw the Merlyn for the first time she'd taken it pretty well. "What.. is that?", she said. And then pretty much nothing for the rest of the week..... Given that the only way to get to and from the house would now require climbing gear and abseiling without being able to use the drive, it was handy that this 17 year old kid said, "Look, I think it might be easier if I sorted this..." And he popped into the car and did just that. I could have kissed him. I think I might have. We get chatting. It turns out he's doing an engineering apprenticeship at a factory on what used to be Croydon Aerodrome. His job, and I kid you not, is to maintain VC10 engines for the RAF's transport and tankers. There is nothing he doesn't know about mechanical stuff. I mentally forgive him for the constant scream of his Apprila 125 at all times of the day and night, and he says he'd really like to be my mechanic. Yippee. By the end of the week I've taken the precaution of having "Spanners: Brian S" stencilled on the side of the car. No back now, young man, I think. His father is delighted. I think he views me as feckless, reckless and possibly a bit deranged, but he does think my wife is normal. "That's a great idea. At least it will keep the little sod out of any more trouble".

Great stuff Scott! How lovely to have an annual visit to the FF Festival. Love it there. Not sure why they got rid of Formula Ford as the first step from karts to single seaters. It was SO much more competitive than F4 is and I'm sure it taught more car control as well with the lower grip. Plus FF was so much better to watch.

Well done!!! Starting from the back.. that first lap usually indicates a lot .. if you get lucky enough for the right opportunities & accidents to appear, and blow through over 1/2 the field, then ya got a chance. Then add on random lucky help from lap traffic, and a guy up front who chooses to drive off-line to block... they usually make a huge mistake going "off script" like that.

Must have been amazing to race with your dad there! Sorry ya didn't share the podium. My dad Jay Pollock raced there, I would have loved to ran a few laps with him.

Good that you consider luck as part of the result, but it is a small part. Well done.

These cars look super fun. Light and not much downforce. It might be just the driver :)), but they seem to be relatively easy to drive near the limit.

Nice drive! Is this a vintage Formula Ford class? Those cars all look to be late 70's vintage, and it looks like you're using the older bias ply tires as well instead of the cantilevered tires. I've driven a few FF 1600's in Solo competition and you're 100% correct, they are pure cars that really reward smooth and consistent driving. The kind of driving you put a clinic on for in this video.

Hi Scott, Great drive there! U know the moment u FFW my heart pumped of fear coz I thought a tyre exploded or sth. I have a question about fitness and stamina. After driving GoKart for a few minutes or driving a car on a track for like 20 minutes I get extremely exhausted (tiredness). Also if I ride with some fast driver I get dizzy. Do u have advice for the two problems?

Great Video.....Ahhh Brands ...classic track... ruined it when they changed Graham hill bend..i raced ff1600 national championship in 93... rookie of the year stepped up into zetecs and got to race with some of the best drivers in the world Jenson Button, Mark Webber, Dan Weldon, Marc Gene, Jason Watt.... were great times... The FF Festival back then had 8 qualifying heats with drivers and top teams from around the world, Van Diemen, Swift, Vector, Mygale and even Burt Ray's Brands Hatch Chassis came out for that Weekend... Cheers

Good to hear. Perhaps you raced same time as Jan Magnussen too maybe? Can't remember the exact year but he won the festival one year I went. I was helping out with a team running Burt Ray chassis. Was certainly a great occasion back then.
