I still remember the first time I saw one of your videos. It began with you crawling through some high brush, and you had a bucket with you. I was like, wtf is this guy doing? When the brush cleared, you came out to a small stream, put some water in your bucket, and proceeded to rock hound, wetting the rocks to show us. I was amazed at how much detail of the rock came out with it wet. I'd never seen anyone do that before. So that, along with your voice, got me hooked. I watched almost all your older videos, catching up to the present, at the time, about a year ago. Never stopped watching after that. A lot of great adventures since then. Looking forward to the new year of videos. Happy New Year Nate and family, and to the Quest for Details family too. Peace!

Thanks for sharing your quest with us Nate. Around the 8:00 minute mark you grab what appears to be an ordinary rock but has in reality many 'Vuggs' filled with blueish-green crystal-like formations. Can you or have you identified what that was? And at 26:00.. Ohhh what a beauty!

NorCal girl here. Live in Shasta Co and haven't done a whole lotta rockhounding here yet since I moved back after 20 yrs. I have found great places for obsidian-mahogany, striped gray, silver and gold sheen and some rainbow. Anywho, how can I tell the difference between chalcedony and quartz? I also find this way cool rock with what looks like maybe green serpentine or light jade, red Jasper, yellows and sometimes veins of white. Great looking stone, but can't seem to identify it. Maybe chert? Find serpentine that's real heavy and i sand and Dremel polish, it exposes pyrite in clusters. Very cool surprise. So, difference between chalcedony and quartz?

it has bene called common opal, it is a mostly silicate mineral, but does not have the " fire " to make it precious , but you can see the yellow blue ,that would be precious if it had those reflective attributes .

Yet another obsidian turtle. We call any preform with a flat side and a humped side a turtle. You are finding coins of a sort. Blanks were traded like coins. You must be in an area where boulders were being spalled and blanked out by the thousands. I like the term you use, "tailings", but these are diagnostic lithic debitage middens in some of your sites. You got major cultural resources poking out around you.

I've found huge working sites where you could see the same blanks being made over and over and then I've found those shapes refined ,lost out in the field, i have so many incredible sites I have found ,MANY, its a touchy subject, but this season I am going to take everybody with me and we are going to look at some incredible things, with utmost respect, and only to preserve and learn not to loot and destroy context, many spots are private and known to locals, some are known only to me and I keep secret ( but Recorded) .its all here, every inch of this area of this state was used, modified, and often shaped by the natives, and I find it constantly, getting anyone to pay attention ends up being the hard part and then often its almost a negative coverup attention that you get, almost like the people in charge arn't so happy that there is so much proof of a high developed society to be found everywhere and would rather paint a picture that its all rare ,sparse, and primitive.... the Quest Goes on !

@@QuestForDetails Well said! Cahokia was absolutely an advanced empire to us Archaeologists, and we classify it as such. In Ohio, where I grew up and went to college, we absolutely had an advanced agricultural society for thousands of years building mounds. In short, it isn't the academic community keeping it secret or down playing it. We do, however, keep a lid on site locations and only mitigate when necessary. We only excavate when we have a good opportunity to gain data. I admire how you treat and preserve what you find. Don't let anyone tell you that it's bad to pick up artifacts from a displaced site, like the gravel bars. They're not in situ and you are salvaging them from becoming sand. Great work!!
