It’s such a shame not enough people are seeing this movie. When I went, there were only about 5-6 other people in the theater opposed to when I saw Halloween Kills with an entire packed theater. People always complain how Hollywood is out of ideas and how they don’t make anything original anymore but when an original movie like Last Night in Soho comes out, nobody comes out to support it.

Going to the cinemas now especially for most ppl during the pandemic is for blockbuster entertainment. Its why superhero movies are doing so well as its fun escapism. Movies like last night in soho and last duel that are not connected to a franchise/IP aren't going to do well in theatres rn unfortunately

Is this movie really all that original though? Films about people going back in time are hardly a new concept. I’m sure the execution of the idea worked well enough but this film’s concept is hardly unique or inventive.

The scene where she first goes into the 60s and the sound changes in the theater and expands to full surround sounds was pretty damn cool. I thought my theater just had bad audio settings for the first part of the movie then I was like “oh it’s like the wizard of Oz” good stuff Edgar.

I don't think Anya gets enough credit for the physicality she adds to her roles. She physically embodies each role she plays. She had a sternness in The VVitch, a rigidness in Queens Gambit, and she moved very softly/fluidly in this movie like women portrayed on screen in that era.

Japanese workers get over-worked for their entire lives and hardly get any breaks, some of them have the idea that they can visit Paris one day as a thing to keep them going. Then they finally go there after many years of back breaking work and it's nothing like they imagined. Some of them even have a mental breakdown. It's called Paris syndrome, has its own Wikipedia page lmao.

I loved the first half of this film however I felt the second half was much weaker and the reveal at the end felt rushed and left a lot of unanswered questions, e.g. (as vague as possible) how did "they" manage to get away with that all these years? Why did "they" feel the need to reveal themselves to the protagonist when it's clear the police thought she was a bit nuts and had no evidence? Why did that character act so damn vague and cryptic when it turns out they weren't the person we thought they were, would have made a lot more sense to impart your knowledge of events when someone accuses you of murder rather than act all weird and cryptic. I do agree that we need more original and different films like this however we cannot overlook criticisms just because a film is different and original. I feel this would have been much better as a straight up mystery thriller and scrap the horror elements/cliches. But to be fair, that first half was so damn good.

Its different till the second half, when you realize that it really isn't. The film goes from being a unique time-travel story to being your standard ghost movie, just wrapped up in the visual panache (and some narrative cleverness) that Edgar Wright's talent and a solid budget would get you

  • @RoyKhn

At it's core, it IS a ghost story... The fact that the film isn't what you want it to be isn't a flaw... The first five minutes let's you know it's a ghost story. She sees her mom's spirit, and a couple of clues show us that it's not a vision. First, her mom's ghost let's her know "good news are coming", and in fact, she gets the letter of acceptance. Second, the ghost of her mom doesn't go with her to London. It's not a vision that follows her around. She's literally a ghost that lives in that house. (Although she does travel to London with her grandma in the end, which I thought was a nice touch). I really liked the third act, as it is a very effective ghost sorry, both with metaphorical ghost of memories of past trauma, and literal ghost. I think people are so jaded with shitty jump scares and CGI ghosts, that they can't appreciate when they are well used in a movie.

The movie is unique but it definitely isn’t perfect. I agree that the “horror” part worked more as the fact that she couldn’t escape the other woman’s life than the weird ghost. The ghost of the men she killed were really, really cheesy, really overplayed and overused. I think that the first time or two that they were used it worked well but after that, it starts to just negatively impact the movie because the third act just devolves into her running away from ghost that just keep grabbing her. I think the ending overall would probably prevent me from seeing the movie again as it started taking me out of the movie, especially because some of those scenes start to include blank sets, the main plot gets lost for a moment, and it’s just not creepy or scary after the first few times. I also think they missed some opportunities, specifically when they insinuate that the dreams the main character has are hurting her in real life. She gets a cut that the girl in the dream gets but then they never touch on it again. I feel like her believing she was going to die would have created such an enhanced tension to her trying not to fall asleep. The rotten tomatoes score is a 75%, which i think is actually accurate considering the schlock the third act is.

He said he didn’t understand why some critics didn’t like the movie and he largely forgives and glosses over just how bad the third act and some of the choices are in comparison with the rest of the movie. I was emphasizing and elaborating on those points. The ghost aren’t JUST overused, they show up repeatedly creating the same exact scene where she runs, they grab her, she gets away. 75% is a big stretch to say was said, more like 20% if you want to discount any elaboration and specification as adding something to the convo.

@Akbar Shabazz-Jenkins The second half (especially the last third) of the movie was so disappointing. Critics are right to barrage the movie with negative feedback, the first half is quite original and charming, but it just falls off into boring horror movie tropes for the last half. If it was just the ending climax that was bad, that would be a reason to question the feedback, but I was on sleep mode for the entirety of the second hour of the movie.

Spot on review. I don’t remember the last time I was so engrossed in a new film and most of it is all down to Eloise, the aesthetic and also the influences from raging from the likes of giallos from Dario Argento to the psychological thrillers of films like Carnival of Souls and the Roman Polanski film Repulsion. Right from the get go I was engrossed and its all down to Eloise, who is someone I identified with since the wide eyed nostalgia she possesses was akin to what I had for the 80s. As a born Londoner, I knew Soho when it was on its last gasp of seediness in the 90s due to the fact I used to go to school there and looking back now the area for me was a conflict. It was a mixture of trendy London with the seedy underbelly, a place where the streets housed film production offices and bars and restaurants, and shared its space with strip joints and ‘model studios’. The place has history and character that is sadly being gentrified, but I’m sad to say its famous qualities was built on the exploitation of women and that should not be forgotten.

The first two acts were magnificent, then the writing falls over itself towards the end to make a more generic ending, leaving a lot of details feeling like they were just there *for* the story, not as *part* of the story. That kind of undermined quite a bit of the script in it’s entirety when you look back on it afterwards. Things were left to be mysterious more for convenience than for atmosphere, and then there’s the overuse of certain overtly “horror” cliches. Apart from that, I found it a joy to watch, it drew me along on a really awesome journey which included some very chilling confrontations of nostalgia and ambition, and resolved itself decently enough, especially since Taylor-Joy and McKensie absolutely bring their all, and that’s what really makes the movie great.

While the ghosts with the occasional jumpscares were scary, it was the thought that you can't escape your past and no matter how hard you try to run away from it, it will catch up to you and sometimes the past is too horrible to let it near you. *Spoilers here* Poor Sandy having to go her entire live with those ghosts and the terrible things she had to go through just to have a shot at her dream was the most terrifying thing to me, that happening to someone so young, vulnerable and so full of live! However, I really appreciate Wright being brave and making a new movie which actually takes risks, and I'm glad I went to the cinema and payed to see it, it was well worth my time and money. As a woman, I was blinking back tears the entire second act of the film. During the first act felt like I was Eloise. I could relate to her so much and I was sucked in. The transition scene to the 60s had me in awe, and then when the ball dropped in the second act I could barely hold back my tears. I felt one of the horrors of history were finally being seen, how women were viewed and treated only 60 years ago. Even when the film goes a little balls to the wall in the third act I’m willing to forgive it for the story that it told.

I was so excited for this movie when it was first announced, it had everything I wanted in a movie; Edgar Wright as the director, Anya Taylor-Joy, based in London (where I live), horror and the 60s. Since it was an Edgar Wright movie I assumed it would be a 15, but I was both excited and disappointed when it was rated 18. It meant it would be darker and scarier than his other movies, but it also meant I might not be able to see it since I’m not 18 yet (and I definitely don’t look 18 yet either). I still bit the bullet and bought a ticket and convinced my older brother to go with me (all I had to do was tell him it was directed by Edgar Wright) and good news, I got in. It was by far the best movie I’ve seen this year, it was absolutely amazing. I didn’t see the plot twist coming but when it was revealed it made a lot of sense. Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie were both amazing in this movie and I loved their acting (this was my first time seeing McKenzie on screen - unfortunately I still haven’t gotten around to Jojo Rabbit). And I was so happy to see Matt Smith again, he’s always good with darker characters. I loved all the mirror scenes, they might have been the best part of the whole movie. The only issues I had with this movie is 1) how unrealistic and under developed the boyfriend character was, he’s just way too ok with everything that is happening and it was painfully obvious that the whole point of his character was just to give Eloise an ally and 2) like you said in the video, it was extremely obvious that Edgar Wright is not used to directing horror movies (Shaun of the Dead doesn’t really count because it was a while ago and he’s only really done thrillers in between this and Shaun).

I am still confused about the mechanics of Ellie's powers, especially because some physical marks do remain (the hickey for example). The psychological horror definitely did it for me way more than the ghosts, especially when the visions started occurring during the day. I absolutely loved the first half and I thought I was about to declare the movie Edgar Wright's best, but the second half fell into some really bad clichés and began to feel more goofy in its execution. And the twists at the end. I had called them early on, but I was praying that I was wrong. The movie didn't need those twists. It didn't need the ghosts. Nothing was at gut-wrenchingly scary as Elouise on her bed, trapped in a nightmare, as 4-5 men slowly crept closer to her to re-enact a sex crime that we knew had already happened. However, as much as the movie dropped the ball (and it dropped it pretty hard imo) I still don't regret seeing it. Because it was just that refreshing and really got me thinking even after it was over. A movie that can do that is rare.

Is it really uniquely different though? Even as it is original, I found the themes, characters, and plot beats to be incredibly cliche and cheaply designed. As for the film taking its time with building the narrative, I found it incredibly rushed and messy. And then there’s the finale which does try to explain EVERYTHING, and comes off as silly and lacking in impact, not to mention those awfully forced twists. McKenzie and Taylor-Joy are great though, and the film does look nice (though Wright certainly has more visually ambitious films). Matt Smith needed more to do. So overall, I really wasn’t a fan of this. I understand the critics for once.

One of the things I loved about this movie is there is work put on every single shot they have in it, nothing is ever lazy and everything is just so well thought out and so well shot in it. From the color design and the cinematography just everything, these are the types of movies that should be used at film schools on how to make a great movie

Unfortunately, neither is "Antlers." And that movie has Guillermo del Toro producing it. When I saw it on a Sunday evening, was literally just me and one other person. Personally, I was more interested in Antlers than Soho but still sucks to see these movies getting burned due to a pandemic, a reluctant audience demographic staying home, and other demographics choosing to support a Halloween Kills/established IP property. Dunno if you saw Antlers, but would love to hear your thoughts. Was a solid 3/5 for me due to amazing atmosphere, creature design, gore, grounded level of terror and good performances. Appreciated the film took its time to cook up the suspense as well, but it's got its faults, and it's quite a slow burn horror that's very dark in terms of themes and overall tone which isn't what a lot of people are looking for right now, but it's definitely the kind of horror film I'd love to make and am currently writing. Love your work and will try to check out Soho!

I saw Antlers and Last Night in Soho on Halloween weekend. I enjoyed both and agree they weren’t perfect, but were still better movies than Halloween Kills. These two films combined on Halloween weekend made less money than Halloween Kills, which is unfortunate. People need to go support these two horror films.

This might be bold of me to say because Dune is in theaters too right now, but if there’s ANY movie to see in theaters right now, it’s Last Night in Soho. I've been trying to talk this movie up since opening day. Might be my new favorite Edgar Wright. And by telling us that her mother was Bipolar and showing us Eloise is a medium of sorts, it gives us the unreliable narrator type protagonist. I think this movie was really special and people need to see it! I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it's just "different." The whole thing felt both familiar and fresh. I just saw this film in theaters. It really is an experience to be lived infront of a big screen to genuinely feel the vivid nostalgia fantasy our main character experienced throughout the story. Its a shame the movie theater experience is now reserved for sugar coated easy watch films such as but not limited to the MCU movies (albeit I am a fan of those). I implore anyone to see this film at theaters if you can, it is the proper treatment for this one.

It was an incredible film!! I love how different it is from anything I have seen in a while. It gave me neo-Hitchcock and Lynch vibes and I agree, although the horror doesn’t always work, especially in the third act (I believe it could have been done better), it’s still quite creepy. Hardly recognizable cast (aside from Anya Taylor-Joy) 4. Focuses more on visual storytelling (as flawed as the story itself is) instead of constantly spoon feeding exposition for the new, slow-witted generation of moviegoers. 5.
