Yeah, Larry's great, my favorite boxer. But it's a real lack of self-awareness saying that Tyson needs to take his loss like a man, but then making an excuse for losing to Tyson. It is true that Holmes was aging and cam off a 1 1/2 year layoff, and I do believe he would have beaten Tyson in his prime. But Tyson beat him that night, plain and simple.

@@johndickson9542 At first Larry didn't do bad in that fight. But he made his mistake in the third round when he came and tried to be cute with Tyson by dancing and showboating, Ali style. I think mike took offense to it, and that's what prompted him to go on the attack and led to Holme's demise. I think that this would have happened even if Larry Holmes was in his prime. Holmes never fought an opponent of Mike's calibre throughout his career, and although Holmes was good, but he couldn't take a punch too well and was easy to knock down. Iron Mike would have been too much for him even in his prime.

@Marcy Macy Oh please, that's total bullshit. After reading your post, I just watched the fight again here on YT and Holmes wasn't anywhere near the ropes when Tyson knocked him down three times. How in the hell could any fighter's arm get stuck in the ropes?

Mike fought Larry when Larry was way past his prime, even the commentary said how past it he was looking in the commentary. He came off two back to back losses, two years out of ring and had like only a few weeks of training. This is Tyson’s best win over a GREAT fighter.

I also believe that Mike Tyson has accepted his loss to Buster. Tyson knows Buster did NOT get a "long count" and that Buster truly won the fight. Still, Don King did file a formal protest. King even 'twisted the arm' of the Ref to acknowledge his mistake and back him up. Tyson had no choice but to also back up Don King's lies....at least for a while.

It actually did happen. I saw the aerial view of the knockout punch of the fight. What Larry did was reach back too far, and when he did, his arm got caught and it was goodnight afterwards.

Holmes was/is a very proud man; if you noticed in his fights where he got knocked down he always got up right away. He absolutely hated hitting the canvas. Tyson fought a lot of boxers on the way to the championship. Tyson was partying instead of training and Buster had a great training camp for once so the stars just aligned that night. That wasn't about Buster being a boxer. Tyson was partying beast mode at that time. The farther Mike got from the trainers he was with under Cus D'Amato, the more Don King could control him with coke, women and parties.

The ref counted to 15 when Tyson knocked down buster Douglas same as when wilder knocked down Fury in there 1st fight...but Douglas did have a good game plan and stuck with it

Agreed. I really think that Tyson lost his motivation to fight after he achieved his goal (Youngest HW Champ). He was not at his best against Douglas, but Tyson still collected a lot of wins on 'not his best nights.' Buster may not have had a long and consistent Prime, but he had skills, and he earned it in Tokyo.

It got stuck because his head was getting rattled and his arm was starting to lose coordination. Larry was just outright getting his ass beat and there’s no way around it. Tyson was there to avenge Ali’s 1980 loss. He had blood on his mind. Larry had no chance. Tyson was a drugged mess by the Time the Douglas fight happened.

Buster wasn't scared of Tyson and after one of those rounds Buster shoved Mike back and came at Tyson. Tyson was about finished after that!!!

Holmes in his prime would have been a much better fight. Holmes was one of the most underrated champs of all time. Btw Larry stop it u never had a chance in 88 vs tyson.

LOL enough of the excuses, you Tyson fangirls act like he was the only boxer to ever party during a training camp. He lost to Buster Douglas in his prime, at 23 years old, and Buster battered him, wasn't a lucky punch.

In Larry Holmes defense he was past his prime when he fought Mike. He was 39 years old. Check out what Mike was doing at 39 getting beaten up by nobody fighters like kevin McBride

Not taking anything away from Larry because he certainly could box. But, he had no workable strategy against Tyson. The fight was over before it started. Larry tried to tie him up but he looked totally inept. There was no strategy against Tyson at his pinnacle of power. Tyson fell apart internally and lost focus with Buster Douglas. He lost his discipline and focus in Japan and relied on his acquired habits and skill. He went through the motions with no definite plan. Buster went down and he was given a long count. Buster was certainly up for it, motivated by the death of his mom. He had an all or nothing attitude and he fought a fight like a man on a mission. Tyson didn't take the fight seriously. Tyson's world was crumbling all around him and could depend on nobody at that time. He was too young to handle all the fame and success and the parasites all around him had no use for him but only for his money. But, look at him now. Great recovery.

I think Larry is envious because Mike supplanted him as the fighter of the 1980s, not just cuz he beat him. He became a far bigger superstar. And Larry now is just seen as the guy between Ali-Frazier-Foreman era and Tyson era. He was the top guy during a downside period for boxing, and was never some huge superstar. Never what he probly thought he deserved.

So basically Larry Holmes just confirmed Mike could not best Ali

Holmes in his Prime ,the Perfect specimen of a Heavyweight boxer..like Ali.

I love Larry but he claims that had he not gotten his arm caught in the rope then it was "goodnight Irene" for Mike. Please Larry. He stomped your ass.

Larry is defiant about his loss to Tyson in one segment, but in another he says Don King visited him during retirement and said I want you to fight Tyson. Holmes said "I cant beat Mike Tyson." But then King put $500,000 in Larrys hand and Holmes said "Im gonna fight Mike Tyson." But Larry should be honest about his loss. Larrys arm was tangled in the ropes because Tysons punches rattled Larrys brain and made him unable to recognize his own entangled arm.

Tyson actually has accepted the loss.

He keep talking shots at Tyson like Mike wont and cant kick his ass now 😂

Holmes can't preach others to do what he doesn't do himself: so Tyson should admit that he got his ass kicked from Douglas, but himself he can't admit that he got his ass kicked by Tyson??? Seriously...

He did Larry worse then Buster did Mike. Mike just completely destroyed Larry from start to finish. No contest. Buster came on strong in the end but he still got knocked down and almost lost

Holmes talks as if it's easy to beat Tyson if you just follow the right strategy. Well many fighters tried something similar as Buster Douglas. For-example Carl Williams Micheal Spinks Tyrell Biggs and they all failed badly. I still believe Douglas was something special that night in Tokyo and thought he was the next Ali or Holmes. That didn't turn out to be but that night he was on their level!
