Larry Holmes on Going 48-0, Losing to Spinks, "Rocky Marciano Can't Hold My Jockstrap" (Part 6)

Ойын-сауық

Part 7: • Larry Holmes on Losing...
Part 5: • Larry Holmes on Beatin...
Part 1: • Larry Holmes on Droppi...
--------
In this clip, Larry Holmes started out by revealing how he invested the $10 million he won from his fight against Gerry Cooney, as he explained that he put the money into real estate that returned a good profit. From there, Larry spoke about his fight against Michael Spinks, which he feels he won. Larry explained that he had a 48-0 record, and he believes that although he felt like he won against Spinks, the judges said he lost because they didn't want to see him surpass Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record.

Larry is the only "celebrity" that ever spoke to me in my 43 years. He had a boxing gym in Easton in the 90's, and I trained there as a teen for a while before I left for the Army. He said I was gonna be good because you can't hit me, because I wear glasses. It sounds corny, but I will never forget it. I was a teenage nobody, and he acknowledged me, just to be nice.

I grew up in the same area and Im very familiar with Larry and some of his closest friends from back in the 80's that were in his band "Marmalade" and I can tell you that Larry has always been a staple in this community. From every aspect. Real-estate, youth athletics, community investment. He's a true Champion and has raised a great family with one of the most incredible ride or die partners one could wish for in his wife Diane. We are SUPER proud of him as a community and brag about our hometown hero every chance we get! THEY ROBBED HIM WIT SPINKS...TWICE! There was a picture in the hometown paper "The Express Times" of Larry holding me as a baby after he won the belt from Norton and came home. We had a parade and everything! I hope Larry lives forever man! He was also very close to Jayson Williams at one point i hope they talk about that.

The time of his reign as heavyweight champion is why he was overshadowed. He came after Ali and before Tyson...not to mention he really didn’t have a persona. In my opinion, those are the reasons why his greatness isn’t acknowledged ... if you go back and look at the fights this dude probably had the greatest jab and technical ability of any heavyweight. He’s most definitely one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

He could have done more to establish himself. He beat Norton in a very tight fight to win the title when most didn’t consider Norton the real champ. He should have rematched the dude and beat him clearly, especially as Ken was quite old already. Holmes had a habit of avoiding rematches with guys that gave him trouble. He fought in an era that was considered weak and yet he avoided a string of tough challenges ( Dokes, Thomas, Page etc). Great fighter no doubt, but the lack of respect he gets is partly his doing.

Rocky was tenacious, he’d probably have a chance to KO most past champions if he hit them on the chin (possibly excepting the REALLY huge guys like Lennox Lewis-up until now), and Larry could be hit with an overhand right. But Holmes also had AMAZING recuperative powers as well as a great chin...I see Holmes winning by UD or mid-late rd stoppage on cuts.

Marciano was respectful of his fellow boxers champion or not. He would have never spoke about a champion like that, "carry my jock strap." It was a foolish statement then as it is now. Larry would have been better off saying I was upset in the moment and I said something stupid. Lets not forget an older Frazier in a sparring session broke 3 of Larry's ribs and he didn't need to outweigh - outsize Larry to do so. Marciano was not 5'2 he was 5'10 and close to 200lbs. @@jasona9 Yes Larry definitely underestimated Michael Spinks. There was an interview I saw that Spinks did. He said when the fight started, he threw a feint. Larry threw his hands up, closed his eyes, and turned his head. Spinks said at moment he knew he had the fight won. You should never take your eyes off your opponent. Spinks controlled the tempo of the fight.

I'm glad to hear Larry was approachable athlete. But all this makes me think back on how much the media did not like Larry. It's proof, society does not like nice people. He signed a KAYO Larry Holmes boxing card I had. He was extremely pleasant and easy to talk to. I remember wishing him good luck with the Mercer fight and he thanked me. About a week later, my dad and I watched the fight. I was blown away how Holmes took it to Mercer and had fun doing so. His ring experience coupled with "old man" strength made it a great fight. @@TheNYHITTINGACADEMY You’re a funny guy. You should do a little more research on Marciano before you count him out so easily. Go watch what Ali said about him when they filmed their movie and Marciano was 47 years old and 14 years out of the ring. Read about his training regimen. The man used a 300 lb bag. He broke capillaries in people’s arms. He was an absolute nightmare in the later rounds because he simply didn’t slow down. I’m not saying he was a good boxer - he wasn’t. At all. But, he was brutal, dogged, and had more heart and a better chin than anyone to put on the gloves in the last 80 years. He had his face split open and would not let his corner stop the fight. He isn’t my favorite boxer, and I don’t think he could beat a really smart fighter in today’s 12 round matches, but he beat everyone that came at him, and he did it with a determination that few people ever could. And from his matches and footage I don’t think many people could’ve taken a solid hit from him and lasted all that long.

You won't get another fighter as talented as rocky marciano, 9 years as pro and a few amateur fights his achievements for such little time boxing are unparalleled in the boxing game. Even Joie Louis said he would never have beaten marciano in his prime and that tells you something, anyone that knows boxing knows that marciano had something that extra special and that would have carried over too any era and any champion. Yes the size difference an skill advancements are a big difference but in any time that sort of special fighter would find a way, Look at guys like Toney they found a way from middleweight too heavyweight, marciano was that sort of mind set and ruggedness just in a day where boxing was less advanced skillfully.

Yea Ali did an act with that. He went into detail about all of that, and how he was trying to make it the most watched sporting event in human history. The build-up to the fight was revolutionary, and was basically a blue-print for build-ups in both Boxing and Pro-Wrestling angles. Joe didn't know that though, and thought Ali had legit turned on him, as a real thing. That was never the case, and Ali tried to make peace with Joe for years, and basically pleaded with him that it was an act, and that he was sorry. Joe finally forgave him, but it was a long process.
