Buster Douglas days after beating Mike Tyson - Later with Bob Costas 2/19/90

Спорт

James "Buster" Douglas is interviewed days after defeating Mike Tyson to win the boxing championship(s). An Ohio native, Douglas talks of all the hoopla soiling his moment - much of that thanks to another Ohioan, Don King. The interview was shown on the February 19th 1990 broadcast of "Later with Bob Costas". #busterdouglas #boxing #miketyson #donking #bobcostas #interview #sports

Tyson came in this fight complacement expecting another short work and so used with opponents so intimidated by him. And this guy surprised him coming in unintimidated takes control of the fight with his jabs making Mike uncomfortable for most of the fight and for the first time Tyson had to deal with adversity he's not so used to so the eventual result seemed inevitable but still shocking because Tyson was deemed invincible during that time.

the problem is that Tyson didn't take this fight as seriously as he should, mainly because he had no idea that Douglas was going to be the toughest fight he ever had. Its Tyson's fault but the fact remains he wasn't at his best imo. but saying this, when a fight is that one sided, it has to mean something, as a great champ will usually find a way to beat a lesser fighter, but it was clear that Douglas was not a lesser fighter, Tyson needed to be at his best to stand a chance. So although Mike wasn't at his best here, I feel he would have had big problems, especially without Rooney.

4:56! all credit to James Buster Douglas for the achievement because it was the biggest upset in boxing history but he’s kidding himself if he thinks Tyson came in in shape because he wasn’t he was neither in shape or mentally correct for that fight there was cracks long before the buster Douglas fight he had mice training him. Nobody knew how to cultivate the technique that made him the champion. He was Aaron Snow and Jay. Bright didn’t know how to operate Mike Tyson mentally or physically he got floored in sparring in preparation for the Douglas fight Tyson was ready. He wasn’t preparing. He wasn’t in shape and he wasn’t mentally, someone only had to stand up to much resistance which James Douglas did and beat him but James Douglas is kidding himself if he thinks Tyson was in shape in that fight he wasn’t

I'm so sick of the long count crap...everyone that gets knocked down end up being down for 14-15 seconds...the ref has to get the other guy to the corner. Buster is looking at the ref after a couple counts, and he hits the mat angry he got knocked down. He was waiting for the count to hit 8 or 9 to get up.....its not like he barely made it up. Tyson wasn't prepared, Buster was fighting with a ton of passion after losing his mom. It was the perfect storm that night for Buster to beat Tyson. 8-9/10 times Tyson wins that fight, this just happened to be that one time. Seeing Buster's past of not training hard, being up and down, losing to lesser fighters, you knew he wasnt going to hold it long. He showed up for Holyfield considerably heavier than this fight and went back to being the same James Buster Douglas. All that being said, Douglas saying he didnt respect Tyson as a champion is hilarious. No chance Douglas could have the record Tyson did at the time.

One thing I don't agree with Douglas here about is that he's being too judgmental towards Mike. Yes, I agree that Mike could be a bad role model for the youth, because of some of his ugly behaviour in and out of the ring, but at the same time, Mike was a youth himself and as a youth with the world's spotlight on him, he was a target for vile snakes like Don King and other scumbags. Basically, there's a lot more context to it and I feel an older the Heavyweight champion seeking to guide the youth in the right direction, he could've began by offering that encouragement and guidance to Mike himself (not necessarily in person, but in public broadcasts like this one).
