Mike and Roy forever my favorite boxers of all time but the way Teddy broke it down about Buster Douglas having that one night of greatness just truly made me appreciate and respect Douglas and how important that moment was for him personally for the first time ever.

Douglas dominated Tyson that night. Controlled the fight until Mike caught him with a solid shot in the 7th or 8th round. He got up in time, bro. Then went back to work, and got Mike a round or two later. Mike managed to get up, but he was rocked. Ref stopped it right there, and he was correct. Mike was reeling. Douglas was heavier than Mike, and showed real heart to come back from the knockdown. Something Tyson could never do. Teddy is spot on with his description of that classic. Tyson is a top-10 heavyweight of all time, but Douglas was better on that night!!!

Idk if it was a setup or not but it was definitely a big fuck up that gets completely overshadowed

That is absolutely true. About a year ago I was watching Tyson's first fight after he fired Rooney. I didn't know that was his first fight after firing Rooney while watching it but I have watched every Mike Tyson fight a number of times so I know his style before and after Rooney. While I was watching the fight I was thinking "Man Tyson is fighting like crap in this fight, what is wrong with him?" I thought no way is Rooney his trainer the way he is fighting. I rushed online to see what his first fight was after firing Rooney and sure enough that was it. Tyson became slower, just trying to head hunt all the time and it's well known his training discipline went down. Tyson needed a controlling trainer that he trusted to keep him focused on and at his peak level and he was never at his best again after Rooney left. Still good but never at his elite level ever again.

I can listen to Teddy talk about boxing all day! He knows the fight game like no one else! He is boxing! RESPECT! ✊🏾

I truly believe what he’s saying about Douglas. I always felt his mother dying weeks before that fight made him one of the first guys to walk into the ring against Tyson with zero fear. Buster was focused and determined for that fight like no other and I think it was from the loss of his mother.

Train hard in the gym and the fight is easy. Kevin Rooney is the X factor. He kept Mike in shape and he reinforced Cus' Dmato's strategy and techniques. He kept Mike sparring as well to maintain Tyson's timing. Tyson abandoned all of that when he fired Kevin Rooney. Bobby Brown said he and Tyson were partying and having wild sex with Japanese women the night before the fight. Tyson had done it before and in his autobiography he said he had a STD and was taking medication when he defeated Berbick & became the youngest heavyweight champ. He said he had improperly trained before and won before so he was confident that he could do it again especially against Buster Douglas. There used to be old video footage of Oliver Mccalll giving Tyson hell in Sparring. He said he told Tyson before the fight that Buster Douglas was going to beat him if he didn't train hard because he knew Buster had talent like Teddy said. I saw Buster Douglas on the undercard of Tyson vs Spinks and he destroyed a fighter named Mike Williams who was the favorite. Buster dropped him with a jab. I remembered him as the flabby boxer with the beatutiful hard jab but I never thought he could defeat Tyson.

Crazy story, my birthday was centered around that fight and everyone was totally shocked. Everyone kept saying what happened 😂

I’m sure Tyson said after Cus died it became meaningless for him to be a great fighter as his drive to fight and train was always to impress Cus as he had basically adopted him as a son. I wonder if he had lived longer how great Tyson could have been.

I believe Teddy Atlas is speaking on what he knows about Tyson. Being that he was his original trainer with Cus D'Amato before they fell out. However, Tyson still had talent and became one of the greatest fighters ever! Again, I believe that Teddy is speaking on the mental aspect of Mike. I still believe that he was a great fighter, but I understand what Teddy is saying.

I agree with Teddy here Mike was clearly a tough kid, the definition of tough tbh but its clear to see in the fightts he lost and his behavior outside the ring that deep down the hell he went through had effected him. A very emotional man that coudl definitely be got at if you managed to get past the exterior

Folks can say that about any fighter! Tyson overcame more today -than he ever had 2 in those 6 fights ! The man went through a heck of a flight only to find grounding and wisdom !! A much higher strength !! Boxing is a game that can teach you many lessons !! But so is finding your true self!! Much Love Tyson!! Much love Mr Atlas !!

I love Teddy's take, I agree to a point. Mike tried to get up, he did show guts, he was absolutely gassed out. Great fight. Busta was awesome.

As much as I love Tyson… he NEVER got up off the mat and won a fight! He didn’t have the extra gear that the All Time Greats Have. Whenever he met resistance… he FOLDED.

That fight happened the night of the Dunk contest during All-Star Weekend in Miami. I remember when it was announced, the shock that filled the Miami Arena that night nearly stopped the contest.

Wow, so well said. I was never a huge fan of Tyson for this reason. I felt Tyson in his prime, deep down was a pretty troubled man, and many of his fans were seemingly seeing the savagery of Tyson as a reflection of who they were or wished to be. To me Tyson was kind of like a child, and to be honest, I worried about him. We are fortunate that he survived and is doing great things, being a good role model.

@hmosesmamulu6491 Tyson, being a smaller, heavyweight, had trouble with taller guys. He ducked guys such as Riddick Bowe, George Foreman, Ray Mercer, and David Tua, all of whom I think would have beaten Tyson. However, Tyson did have chrisma with many fans and so was overhyped.

And I really wanted to see him fight Tua. 90% of Tyson's fighters lost before they got in the ring. The fighters who weren't scared of him beat him. Douglas, holyfield and Lewis. Shit holyfield bullied him. I love Tyson and happy hes still alive but all time great? Nope. Can't give him that.

Or like Tyson mentions in his book that after he won the title at 21 he no longer loved the sport and felt there was nothing left to accomplish. He was just boxing and going through the motions after thst and seen he could knock guys out without hardly training. Then when he faced someone who actually was taking the sport seriously and trained, thats when you get the losses......

When Tyson knocked down ,Douglas first, watch the ref slow count. Even Tyson points this out, also admitted Douglas got up and beat his ass. But start counting when he hits the ground ,a point worth looking at.

I love and respect Teddy Atlas, he's a straight shooter, (no pun intended) and no nonsense kind of guy who knows his stuff. As much as I love Tyson, Atlas isn't wrong.... However, I have to disagree with Teddy's point that Tyson never overcame a competitive fight.. Yes, most of Tyson's fights were like what Teddy said BUT Um, Tyson vs Ruddock wasn't a cake walk. Donovan Razor Ruddock was one of the hardest punchers in that time. Sure, he didn't have a great resume' and had defensive flaws but he was no tomato can and had a decent record.

I'm not sure everything is in absolutes. He overcame Ruddock, who in both fights was spending the bulk of the time getting his butt kicked, with it looking better because other than the Douglas fight, we were just used to straight domination. He landed a few good shots while never looking the part of an eventual winner. I'll grant you it shows Tyson wasn't a sheer frontrunner. But for right or wrong, boxing greatness at its highest level needs to come with that little X-factor that shows a fighter winning a fight against another great fighter, winning when it looked like he was gonna lose, or winning as an underdog--things he never did.

I'll never forget seeing Mike lose that fight and I agree with Vlad I'm 47 I saw that fight on TV at home with my parent's And my Mom and dad were both huge boxing fans and got me into it and Tyson is my All time favorite. My Mom noticed immediately that Mike looked weak that night and didn't have the fire in his Eyes. We didn't know that Mike was High on street drugs and didn't train but Mike underestimated the wrong man Douglas mother had just died and He swore He was gonna win for Her and He did He didn't just beat Mike He beat the Heck out of Mike.

Ali had a fairly steady and loving upbringing and Angelo Dundee was in his corner till the end. Joe Louis had Jacky Blackburn in his corner. Tyson had a traumatic start in his first 12 years and 6 years later Cus died. After the Tubbs fight his professional support crumbled. If Cus lived till the end of Tyson's career he would've retired undefeated, probably somewhere in the late 90s having defeated Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Bowe etc. So having said that despite his horrible upbringing in his formative years, he would've been great till the end and probably be mentioned by all boxing fans and historians as the greatest ever. Quite weird that Teddy Atlas (who is a trainer) never mentions this. Maybe he doesn't wanna see these solid arguments

Great take and I agree with Atlas wholeheartedly.

Y'all don't need to keep trying to "defend" Mike lol. He knows what his problems were at that time in his life. Vlad didn't bring Teddy on here to shit on Mike. This guy is an all-time great trainer and one specifically who in fact trained Mike. His opinion is a valid one and he's not lying on him. Mike's issues were deep-seated and like Teddy said, he was one of those types in his younger days that if you stood up to him and had elite level skills yourself you had a chance against him. In the case of Douglas he shouldn't have had a chance against him but Mike underestimated him, let his ego get inflated and didn't train anywhere near as hard as he should've for the fight. I said it about the second Roberto Duran/Sugar Ray Leonard fight; any king that doesn't keep prepared to defend his crown isn't worthy to sit on the throne. At that point in time, Mike wasn't anymore...

Both Fighter’s outside life affected their ring life. It worked toward the Bad with Mike and it Gave Buster the Push he needed.

Atlas was actually right here. When i was young i thought Tyson was superman & unbeatable even after he lost. But then i got older & got into boxing & actually became a real boxing fan & not a casual. I went back & watch all Tyson's old fights before Douglas & realized he was actually fighting ALL BUMS. & It was the record padding process every boxer goes through to make them look champion ready. Even Douglas was a bum but that night he wanted it more than tyson. Everytime Tyson faced REAL CHAMPIONS he lost. So actually he looked good against bums but could never overcome real champs. Its easy to look indestructible when you knocking a bunch of journeysmen out in the 1st round

It is kind of a circular argument. Like it's holding it against Tyson that he's good enough to just wipe out good fighters without any problems. And a lot of the reason they didn't offer resistance was because of how good Tyson was. But there are no fighters who are put on the absolute top shelf who failed to deliver in just about every competitive spot they were in and historically, you can't not count that against him.

But for somebody to be the champion for years and to knock all of those big guys out, that argument cannot apply to such a great fighter. What Teddy says does apply to different sports and life situations but not when it comes to a boxing champion of that stature. If Tyson knocks out a guy twice his size in a matter of seconds, that means that Tyson challenged himself and overcame the challenge tremendously. He's right when his says that Mike will have a problem when someone stands up to him. We've seen it with the 2 Holyfield fights, and Lennox Lewis fight

That fight showed Tyson would have troubles with a George Foreman or Sonny Liston. Big guys with jack hammer jabs. Angelo Dundee called the outcome too. I don't think Tyson quit in that fight --he was getting his ass kicked for 10 rounds but he never quit.

I think prime Foreman would have been an issue for Tyson, but the old Foreman that fought when Tyson was fighting would have been a victory for Tyson.

@@michaelloughrie5519 It's a 3-4 round fight in 1974 or 1987. 1974 Foreman by KO 1987-1992 Foreman by KO. Not only that but I don't call 1970-1974 Foreman prime. Big George became a much more relaxed fighter after he returned from a 10 year hiatus. But against Tyson it's Foreman by KO regardless of which version gets in the ring. BTW- Buster Douglas performance against Tyson was likely the best performance by anyone in a heavyweight title fight. Buster boxed on a dime that night.

@@PR-WAY Tyson lost to Douglas when he was 23 years old so he was in decline? Buster Douglas beats Tyson 7 days a week and twice on Sundays. Big George Foreman beats him 7 days per week and twice on Sundays. Styles make fights and Tyson was made for Big George.

Before Tyson fought Douglas he beat fighters that was on Douglas level. He even beat fighters that beat buster Douglas like Lou Savarese and Tony Tucker. Tyson became over confident which resulted in him not training properly for the Douglas fight.

I feeling like I am so offended by the titles that I watch these clips. I think Tyson has always been an icon that's why it offends me.

Every single thing that Teddy Atlas said is 100% correct! He spoke facts. he didn’t put Mike Tyson down, but spoke the truth by saying that Busta Douglas, exposed Tyson. Tyson just wasn’t prepared, or as prepared as he should’ve been. Doesn’t take away from the greatness of the body of work of Mike Tyson, but that particular fight, Mike got caught slipping, straight like that💯‼️

I disagree with atlas,,because Mike had many back and forth dog fights with different opponents...Also,,all of Mike's losses were in the post Mike era,,meaning when Mike left the cust'dmato gym,,stopped training,,started abusing drugs and alcohol,,partying with women,,surrounding himself with snakes like don king,,etc.....That being said,,if Mike woulda stayed with the cust'dmato gym and remained focused and holy in his lifestyle,,he woulda never tasted defeat in my opinion...

If Tyson takes the preparation and training seriously leading up to that fight he would've smoked Douglas. An unprepared Tyson caught Douglas once and floored him. His lack of conditioning and carelessness caught up to him.

This is true to anyone that actually watched more than just highlights. He straight up quit against Holyfield. Once you turn your back looking for the ref you can no longer be in a certain tier of greatness.

I think Mr. Atlas is perhaps, in my opinion, over-complicating the Tyson loss to Douglas. I see and respect his thought process but I think it is simply that Tyson underestimated the skilled, motivated, and prepared James "Buster" Douglas and came into the fight expecting to easily overpower the little-known contender, but he was caught by surprise and was not able to adjust. Tyson is not the first "great" to underestimate an opponent and pay the price for it. Look at Ali/Spinks and just what happened with Fury and Ngannou. I believe Tyson had a rough night, but it doesn't mean he wasn't a great boxer. I always thought that if Tyson Douglas II happened, Tyson would have gone into the fight more educated on Douglas and also physically ready to fight hard and stop him. But that's just my opinion. You can probably make a strong case that the one factor that held Tyson back from being considered an ATG was his discipline and consistency.

I think Teddy just mad that Tyson abandoned him and stayed with Cus. Mike Tyson lost to Buster had mostly to do with the fact that Tyson got too comfortable knocking guys out easily that he began to abandoned his great technique like head movement, combinations, body shots, using his jab to nullify his opponent jab, and leaping forward with the right cross to close the distance and hit his opponent. He became 1 dimensional fighter who just simply came forward with no head movement and throwing one punch at a time with no technique. And plus after Tyson got with that sheisty promoter Don king, he also left his old trainer Kevin Rooney. Despite all that Tyson did manage to drop Buster and should have got a KO but the ref did a long count, cheating Tyson out of a KO win.

Tyson wasn’t able to overcome resistance in a competitive fight. Buster Douglas whipped his ass for much of the fight but Tyson did endure and drop him in the 8 th around. However, Tyson went on to evader Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. And Tyson quit 3 times (biting Holyfield’s ear, not getting up against Williams, and not leaving the corner against McBride )

The main reason for these things is Mike Tyson had absolutely no desire to be fighting. He actually hated it at that time and was only doing it for a payday. Now if you took Mike Tyson with a fire in his heart in a passion for boxing, all of these guys would have probably been knocked out. How you feel about what you're doing dictates the outcome and we can all think of examples in our own lives.

The Mike Tyson that lost to Buster Douglas was not the same Mike Tyson that destroyed Michael Spinks….Tyson at his peak would have blown out Buster Douglas… when he lost to Douglas he was surrounded by amateurs not disciplined and not motivated…on the other hand Buster Douglas was at his very best that night in great shape and highly motivated…after that loss, going to prison, and getting involved with Don King Tyson’ career went off the rails

Part of what being great is being disciplined and dealing with life. Every fighter has to do it. People like to give tyson a pass. He was a great fighter, but when you compare him to other greats he's towards the bottom

Tyson didn't train. Period. ... whole this beautiful story about Douglas was possible because of Tyson. Hate as much you want Teddy, Mike will remain most loved boxer of all times.

I remember that fight vividly. I knew he would win. Told my dad who thought different. All I had to hear was that he was doing it for his mother who had just passed. You can make excuses for the Great Iron Mike Tyson but on that day Buster was Greater.

I'm not making an excuse for Tyson, it was his fault- he didn't train well for the fight, sometimes he would blow off training camp, maybe he did this time too.

I use to dislike teddy atlas but after these interviews I really like him. People saying he hate Tyson is bs he was being honest he don’t have that hate in his heart ANYMORE. And this from a Tyson fan

Teddy absolutely does hate Mike Tyson and it stems for his jealousy from the fact that Cus chose Mike over him. It was a great betrayal and Teddy will hold this grudge until he is buried in the ground. It really is this simple, everything else is just noise.

Buster Douglas, father was in his corner as I understand, encouraged him, deserves some credit.

A lot of people who dont know boxing history. The fact is Mike was undefeated with Cus D'Amato's training protegee Kevin Rooney. He got rid of Rooney because he started getting influence by afrocentrism and black muslims and wanted to surround himself with black men. He fired Rooney without even telling him why and still never apologized to him. And then he got his first loss right after firing Rooney, who had Tyson in insane physical shape. Like Teddy said when Mike was a kid he was "easily misled". Thrn after that loss to buster it was all downhill from there. From prison to drugs and all the other losses.

I think you might be wrong about the greatest upset in sports history.. I believe that was the NY Yankees choking in the 2004 ALCS to the Boston Red Sox lol..

Buster Douglas was huge tho dude had a 83 inch reach and even though Tyson lost he was fighting back and got up when dropped by hugs shots. Also he dropped Buster and the ref counted slower then he did for him. I like Teddy but his hate for Tyson like putting a gun to his head obviously is the reason he’s saying this lol.
