Land Rover - DIY easy-to-duplicate winch mount for Discovery 3 / 4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#Landrover #LandroverDiscovery #LR3
In this episode, we show how we build a winch mount bracket for Vera´s Land Rover Discovery 3. The bracket is a self made construction out of laser-cut 6 smm steel. Anyone with basic welding skills and a angle grinder can duplicate this design for about 120 US$.
Then we show hot install the winch hidden inside the bumper of the LR3 with minimum vehicle modifications.
The drawings and files are available for Patreons over our Patreon account LR Time.

The drawings are for private use only (commercial use of my design is prohibited). Copy the design on your own risk. LR Time is not responsible for any harm to you, your souroundings or your poor Land Rover vehicle.
This is a video for enterteinment only and not a how-to instruction. Don´t come back complaing to us if you cut your Landi in half and then the pieces do not fit.
The winch we used is a

Christian is single-handedly restoring my faith in German engineering, which has been eroded by 20 years of overly-complex and fragile products from BMW and AUDI. The only thing I'd do differently would be to try and fabricate an extension for the winch clutch lever to position it where it could be operated by opening the bonnet. Other than that, absolutely awesome!

Don't be, if you do your homework you know what to look out for. If you are serious, get yourself an icarsoft diagnostic tool for Land Rover, and hook it up while testdriving a Discovery. Then you'll most likely know more about that car than the current owner. Just consider this : You either can pay for the repairs or fix it yourself, meaning you also have all of the tools necessary. If neither applies to you, then do not buy one. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

I got my AUD$350 ebay 12000b winch with steel cable about 10years ago for my Defender 130, before the installation I re-greas and re-seal the gearbox that I have no problems with that side for many uses. I have once burnt out the motor, it was pulling a heavy loaded touring LC79 up hill. My local motor re-winder said the soldering on the armature was not enough, he has fixed all solderings on the armature and it was 5 years ago. Cheap winchs are not all bad. I see you have steel cable on the winch that fairlead you are try to making normally used for dyneema rope, steel cable we use roller guided fairlead, steel cable will cut the aluminum plate when in contact. As always, good video on the installation. Happy New Year.

I think the worst point in my design is, that the winch cannot easily removed for overhaul. I need to change this. Thanks for your comment. Christian

Love your channel guys! But being a welder myself I wondered why Robin grinded that weld down? There's an old rule in metal fabrication saying: if a weld looks good don't touch it! Unless the weld's in the way ofcourse and the surface has to be flush.

Hello Christian & Vera. This is a very nice looking winch bracket, and very well designed and most certainly fit for purpose. There are two different types (each with their own name) for the metal part that the wire runs through (the part you are yet to make. The one your winch came with is called a Fairlead Roller. The other one without the rollers is still called a Fairlead, though it's other more popular name is a Hawse (a shipping term, it is where the anchor chain passes through the ship. The roller type is for wire rope, the hawse is fore nylon rope. I think the wire rope or the hawse or both may get damaged if you go that way. I say I think because I have never seen wire rope used with a hawse,, only a fairlead roller. In Australia we have a number of 4WD accessory outlets that sell the cheaper products. The main one I think is 4WD Supercentre. I am sure someone will add others.

I did update the drawings and made the design compatible with a roller fair lead. Even if we will not install it. Check out our comunity page for the latest drawing. It is much improved now. Christian

Great work once again. Fitting a cradle between the chassis on my D2 for my winch, because I have an alloy bullbar, was a simple job compared to Vera’s D4. Have you considered swapping the steel winch cable out for a Dyneema rope? Best wishes to you and family for 2022. Btw; good choice of room colour. Same as mine! 👍🏻🙏🏽🦘

Fab install! I would say if vera doesnt like the look of the red cable then you should consider covering it with flexible black conduit with the split down it 👍🏼

12,000 Chinese lbs = 4,000 real world lbs ! Most Chinese products look ok on the outside, but it’s the bits on the inside that really count. I hope the winch works when you need it.😜 Very nice German engineering on a British car with a Chinese winch ! I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Christian, in Australia we don’t have a Harbour Freight equivalent, the closest is Hare & Forbes (machinery house) but they don’t have 4x4 stuff. The closest would be eBay where we can get all the quality Chinese stuff.

Love it. Very neat design. Have you considered adding a remote control and having the cable control for backup? To store the hook, you could run it down to the recovery point. Maybe add some scuff panels to stop the cable from rubbing through the bumper plastic. I would have the number plate hinge up as it will be mangled if you are winching up hills or muddy tracks. Time to get stuck to 'need it'. 😊

Hi Christian and Vera, i hope you and your family had a nice start of the new year. Like every video that you posted we stay every sunday in front our tv enjoying and learning much more than expected about ours Discovery 3. I share my experience with winches, i don´t have it in my D3 but I have some experiences with other wehicles. The steel cable will damage your aluminium hawse fairlead. For steel cable you should to use a roller (as supplied) or change it for a synthetic rope. this rope has many advantages, stronger, lighter and will not damage your alu piece even it works sideways. Best regards from Argentina

16:20 Ordered the clips from aliexpress. Was pretty cheap. Then liked how it looked without the plastic thingy and and didn't put it back. It's not like you really need it anyway. And sometimes it breaks when offroading (that's why the clips broke 1st place). Mine is D4 though. It looks bit different I think.
