Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thumbs up if you think this Land Rover should have been saved!

    What makes me incredibly upset when I see videos like this is this defender was perfectly roadworthy and in Florida you see cars driven all the time with bald tyres and broken suspension and all sorts of weird lifted trucks and Kit cars which are legal to own but a defender in perfect condition like this one is not- just goes to show you the idiocy of the customs and border patrol agents that did this.

If we were not such huge pussies in the US, we would have a more interesting line up of vehicles available to us. Big brother always has to watch out for our well being, disgusting. Yeah it has no air bags. So I can go buy a rusted out 1974 Pinto that's a real death trap and that's for American roads, but a Defender, with a proven tough body structure and a very safe vehicle, will be crushed? Maybe that douchebag at 0:10 should have to drive a rusted out 1974 Pinto. Before 1990, it was legal to import vehicles, but some of the car companies' US branches went to the government and whined "We're losing money!" when they wouldn't bring over some of their higher performance models, so people had to import them. I say, can the stupid laws and let people bring cars over. Not to mention those foreign countries have safety standards as stringent as ours in many cases. Where are they importing from, Burkina Faso? No. They usually import from Europe, Japan, etc... countries with crash and road safety standards. November 10, 2013 2:12 pm

    Im pretty sure the real reason this was crushed was because the car companies paid millions of dollars to get laws passed so that used out of the country vehicles could not be imported and cut into their american new car sales. As far as being unsafe, just because they aren't crashed rated doesn't make it a vehicle that should be crushed. High emissions? I bet its not that bad to really worry about. Another example of why america is so in debt. So many resources allocated after something so small. Well guess what-Im still not buying a new plastic car from the car companies. If I can't import the vehicle I want, I will just buy an old one before they stopped importing them and fix it up as new.

    Bang on! It's why when America gets Japanese cars imported, they are small naturally aspirated engines and front wheel drive. Where in Japan they are AWD Turbo models. There are clear laws in place that regulate these vehicles because of competition. Already Japanese cars are favored more over the American vehicles, so they have to limit power and capability. A lot of the time they use reasons like "non economical" or this case for importing "not safe for american road use". But if a car is not safe now... Why 25 years later does it become safe :) You are absolute correct about the competition law. Even some vehicles over 25 years old that we get inquires on where I work, have to be cleared with the united states, but because of high power output, they sometimes do not allow them. It's claimed that as long as there is an American counterpart, a non 25 year old model can be brought in. In some cases this is true. A few models of the Toyota iST for example are importable that are only 10 years old, but have to be re-branded by it's "american name" to be registerable. It's such a head spinning business...

  • @VulpesHilarianus

    @VulpesHilarianus

    The emissions thing is really just a lie. In the early 1980s Mercedes-Benz saw their profits getting destroyed in North America, because people in their New York showrooms were asking dealers to import cars like the 280SL and 500SEL from Germany, where the cars cost the same or cheaper and often had better options not legal for sale in America. By importing these cars and doing federalization modifications like headlight and speedometer replacements, these dealers were able to make a profit selling these otherwise illegal cars at above MSRP because they weren't from the factory -- they were technically used, having been imported from dealerships in Europe. Mercedes-Benz, pissed at the fact that their own dealers were cheating them, teamed up with BMW and lobbied the NHTSA to ban grey imports, under the guise that because the conversions weren't done from the factory they weren't safe. In 1987, after years of bitching and whining and throwing money at the government, Mercedes-Benz and BMW got their way, and the import ban was introduced. The United States government specifically designed it around the EPA, as during the time when it was being tossed back and forth the environment was a very big concern. This allowed them to appear as though they were following the initiative to clear smog from cities, despite foreign gasoline (not diesel or UK) vehicles being as clean or cleaner than their American counterparts. It wasn't until around the late 1990s that the NHTSA changed the rules and said vehicles over 25 years old could be legally imported, in a nod to the collector car scene. So in essence Mercedes-Benz paid off the government because they got pissy.

    waimeagavin808 Their are plenty of older vehicles that are allowed on us roads that do not meet new vehicle emissions standards. so... who came up with this wonderful idea to film this and put it on KZread? Didn't they have the slightest inkling that people wouldn't believe their american safety standards claim. Do they expect the public to nod in agreement or swallow whatever reasoning they come up with with a stupid smirk on their faces? Who are these idiots? Should I clap and say 'good job'

    Funny how 99% of people think this is stupid and a huge bureaucratic waste of resources crushing a safe classic vehicle...so thumbs down. BUT the description says thumbs up if it should have been saved? Either way, tax dollars being flushed down the toilet so these yoyos can play with cranes. They're following the law so can't blame them, but these laws were probably lobbied by Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors in the first place. Nothing to do with safety...

    Wait a minute. He said they were keeping an unsafe vehicle off of American roads at 3:48, yet, had it been 25 years old or older, it would have imported legally with no issues. Isn't that the same 'unsafe' vehicle still on American roads? So just because of it's age, it goes from unsafe to safe? Nevermind, who am I to expect logic out of our government.

    The argument about safety is bullshit, but if you watch to the end he does make the point that the person trying to import this particular vehicle had faked the age of a newer model to try and get around the 25 year rule... yes the 'punishment' is harsh [and almost vindictive], but equally they had purposely tried to dupe the customs and import dept, got caught, and made an example of. At the time of writing (2022), as long as it's a genuine pre 1997 Defender there should be no reason you can't import it as a classic vehicle under the 25 year rule.

    So a 1975 Defender is safer than a 2005???? And a change on the paper work makes this an unsafe vehicle???? Maybe they ought to put this genius on the Mexican boarder and see if he can target those who cross illegally and make our country safer.

    Sad to see such a nice vehicle ruined by overzealous law enforcement. I'm a US citizen and I think this is silly. Yeah, it doesn't comply with current new car regulations, but get a special dispensation or something. They did it for the first new Mini's with their bumper height dispensation. A few years later, they had to redesign the Mini and make it larger with higher bumpers to comply with regs, but a few cool ones still got in. And don't get me started on the Smart Cars. Ugh, what a waste of a sweet Landy.
