If you've listened to her "Born To Die" album, then you'll know the track next to this song, "Off To The Races", is sang in a much happier and seductive tone. Her phrasing can sound 'icy' or 'lazy', but she can gives different vibes to her songs depending on the moods of the song. When she sings in a higher register, her voice is airy and feminine; and her timbre is sweet and appealing ( her head voice is resonant and also bit operatic, check out "Cola", "Terrence Loves You" and "Brite Lites" ). When she sings in a lower register, her voice is dark and slightly smoky, carrying a mysterious vibe to her song ( albeit she often hits the low notes by lowering her larynx, an unhealthy technique ). Besides, her vocals ( both live and studio ) have improved quite a lot since her debut album. Her songs are generally always a work of progress.
