    This was excellent! Thanks Jim. I LOVE your science videos! The main product line I use is Kokoist Japanese soft gels and I use her Le Blanc lamps (cordless, made in Taiwan). I’m branching out to hard gels and was wondering if her lamp will cure them or if I need to invest in a few LE lamps for your hard gels. I really prefer her Le Blanc because it’s cordless. If you do anymore of these comparisons, I’d love to see how hers does with your hard gels! In the meantime, I’ll pick up a few of the LE lamps, but I know I’m going to miss the cordless option. 😢

    Is cure thickness representative of how cured a product is? If so is the LED Dot Mini curing the gel better than the LED Dot Pro?

  • @jimmcconnell6079

    @jimmcconnell6079

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi ReshiK - that is a great question. Cure thickness is a method to measure the curing ability of the gel in combination with the curing light but it is not a measure of how cured the gel product is. The measurement of the amount of bonds that can be formed that are actually formed (also known as percent conversion) during the curing process is best done using other techniques such as tensile strength testing or differential calorimetry testing. The gel near the upper surface of the gel sample that has been cured has the greatest percent conversion and should be 80% or greater conversion after one curing cycle. Lamps with insufficient curing power will result in a decrease of the percent conversion. This method of measuring the maximum cure thickness is good to determine how well your curing light is performing compared to how it once performed when it was new. As the curing lamp is used, the irradiance from the LED's decreases over time. As the irradiance decreases, the maximum cure thickness decreases and once the maximum cure thickness reaches 66% of what it was when the curing light was new, it is time to replace the curing light in order to prevent curing issues and lifting. The LEDdot Mini cures thicker than the LEDdot Gen1 or Gen2 because the 400nm wavelength is the only wavelength that is emitted. 400nm is longer than the 365nm wavelength and because it is a longer wavelength, it penetrates deeper into the gel and will cure to a greater maximum cure thickness than a 365nm with the same irradiance value.

    Hi Linn - thank you for your comment. It is my opinion that Sun does not make a consistently good curing light. We once purchased our curing lights from them (Sun 2) and we had constant issues withe consistency of their products and then moved away from purchasing from them to our current manufacturer. Some of the lights we purchased were wonderful but to a lesser degree we had issues with proper curing, good electronics and returned / broken lights. I hope that this is not still continuing with them and I wish them only the best, but we will not purchase curing lights from them again.

    The full-cover tips block a significant portion of the light and as such, a double cure might help but I would have to conduct a different series of tests to verify. Double curing would not hurt the curing of the gel under a full-coverage tip in this case.

    How do you define cure thickness and why is that a good measure of how good a lamp is? Thanks!

  • @jimmcconnell6079

    @jimmcconnell6079

    2 жыл бұрын

    Maximum cure thickness is measured by placing a volume of gel onto a form and curing it. I prefer to use a white gel (I use our Perfect White) for this test. I cure the gel for the recommended period of time and then cleanse any uncured residue from the form (typically). I then remove the cured nail gel from the form and measure the maximum thickness area. If there is no uncured gel on the underside of the cured sample, I repeat the test so that there is uncured gel. I will do this test with two or more curing lights to evaluate the thickness of the cure in each light. It is a decent way to evaluate the curing ability of the light without being required to purchase expensive testing equipment. Some curing lights will cure the gel thicker than others. I also use this test to evaluate the same light's performance over a long period of time (performing the test every three months) and watch the cure thickness decrease over time until it is time to buy a new curing light.

    Can lamps be repaired to keep them going for a long time like we can for e-files? Or do LED lamps just have to be replaced entirely?

  • @jimmcconnell6079

    @jimmcconnell6079

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Gabyk - this is a great question. When the LEDdot needs to have the LED emitters replaced, there are a few panels (what we call an "array") that require replacement. These arrays would all have to be replaced and this can be as costly as buying a whole new light. We suggest buying the new light.

    what does it mean if a lamp has really high wattage? is that a factor in quality? cause i've seen some low cost amazon/shein lamps with a super high wattage, and i can't figure out the reason when there's suppossed high quality lamps on the market with a standard 36wattage

  • @jimmcconnell6079

    @jimmcconnell6079

    3 ай бұрын

    Hi Oriana - this is an excellent question. Some of the curing lamps on the market are using the total amount of electrical current as a power rating. This is wrong and misleading. For example, the curing light might use a total of 265 watts of electricity (circuit board, power converter, sensors and LEDs) but have 15 LED, each using 1 watt of electricity. This should be rated as a 15 watt light but may be listed as a 265 watt light. Additionally, the light might not emit 15 watts of light or will emit 15 watts of light but over a large area. This issue can be resolved if the light manufacturer would actually list the irradiance (or emittance) value of the light. This would require the use of a very accurate measuring device to determine just how much curing potential is reaching the fingernails. This information would require actual performance testing and most, I fear, would be opposed to releasing the actual data. I hope this is helpful. Jim

    Great video! I do have a question though, when it comes to testing a cure. If a product is hardened from only a 50% cure then we can't use that as an indicator of complete cure. So I don't understand why we measure the cure thickness. How can we measure the safe 90% and higher cure that products need to achieve proper cure. Just because a product looks and feels cured doesn't mean it is. I learned this from Doug Schoon.

  • @jimmcconnell6079

    @jimmcconnell6079

    Hi Maeldeis, you are correct. This is a test of the cure thickness only and not completeness of cure (conversation of bonds that can be formed to bonds that are formed). There are tests that can be conducted to test completeness of cure but these typically involve more sophisticated testing methods and equipment.
