The fact that they have clothing for the growing lamb feels brutally sad. It was probably their daughter’s clothing that they hadn’t been able to get rid of.

It is. The mom & lamb Ada are shown next to the grave of human Ada. It is somewhat hinted with a flashback that she may have drowned in the river or streams on their land some time before (the movie showed the dad wading through the water distraught calling for her) she seems to have passed around the same age and or size of lamb Ada…which also explains why they were so hell bent on teaching how to get back home just in case & keeping her close

​@@felixgato4392the whole point of the movie revolves around the emotions that animals have yet cannot express lmao hence ingvars fate being the same as the sheep mother, and the long shots of the sheep's eyes as well as the cat and dog suggesting they are feeling emotion yet cannot portray it as profoundly as people. This is why Maria seems to realize that she experienced some cosmic justice as the same thing that happened to ram man (s/o killed, child taken) just happened to her.

The whole thing where Ingvar shows Ada how to get home through the fog gives me hope that she'll find Maria someday and they'll both get some closure.

Also did you catch that Ada can talk telepathically. When that scene happens she can't be heard talking but he responds as if she asked "what is there's fog and I can't see the mountains? “ the cadence doesn't feel like he just made up the question in his head it feels like he heard it clearly.

Ok the scene with Afa holding the cat at the table was INCREDIBLY cute. Also in general the animals liking Ada was pretty good sign how pure and good she was. Or else they'd be spooked

This reminds me of the stories of fairies in Scotland. The fae folk considered it an honour for their child to be raised among humans so they would leave their babies to be raised until young adulthood before taking them back. Of course there are a lot of differences with that and the movie but it gives me that vibe of the father leaving the child for a while to be raised among the humans (or sheep I guess he thought) and then coming back for them at a later time.

The movie does make me wonder if Ada will be safe with her father. He came and forced himself on an animal. Because he's alone? Then he took forever to come back to see if there's a child and then killed the person she saw as her father in front of her. The guy has no regard for Ada's feelings.

I mean he's not a human he is an animal like Ada. And Maria and Invar were using her in a way too, to replace the daughter they lost. If I was a kid I would resent my parents if the only reason they loved me I was to replace their other child. It probably tore Ada apart to see Invar debut, it would hurt her more to find out the truth years later knowing that you could never live a normal life because the rest of society might resent you. In this way she would be with others like her and seen as her own person rather than that of a replacement.

if you believe that directors usually don't put anything in a movie unless there is a reason, there was a reason to include Ingvar's instructions on how to get home if Ada ever got lost. Ada was beginning to understand that she was of two worlds - human and animal. She showed no attachment to the Sheep man but definitely grieved the loss of her human parents. There is hope that she would be given the agency to choose which world she belonged to once living amongst the sheep people.. and find her way in which ever world she chooses. I think this is more about free will and repercussions of choice of actions and reactions - as well as all living beings to choose their own destiny.

Initially I assumed it was trying to pull the wool over our eyes and make it a “she was just a regular lamb the whole time” due to how nonchalant everyone was about it and especially how the brother reacted to her. But I feel the ending very concretely said “no this is all real and shit’s fucked”. Really enjoyed this movie, can’t wait to get it on dvd

Like the woman who whenever she spoke, would spew a jewel or a flower from her mouth. I mean that’s helpful as they needed the money but given how her mother acted, and how weird it would be for that to happen, I can imagine it’s long term unpleasant.

Red Ridinghood, for example, is a warning to young women about the lengths that sexual predators will go to. This was what fascinated the Grimm brothers, who did extensive research into collecting as many of these folklore stories as they could. They realised that there was a verbal (pagan) history that had not found its way into accepted cannon, or into print, because the church had dominated all publishing for generations. They wanted to prevent the loss of that collective memory, by logging as much as they could. From them we learn less about reality of history than we learn about ancient attitudes, the fears that occupied people and the things they thought it was important for their posterity to remember. It is a window into the medieval imagination of great historic value. Though, in this movie, I got less of a sense of moral imperative or clear meaning that we’re meant to take away from it, and more of a mood and set of emotions that speak to what it’s like to be alive today. Something of equal value, I suppose? Her sense that her happiness could not last, and that there was something inevitable about the ending, made me think of what it must be like to lose a custody battle, post divorce? A sort of symbolic meta-play, speaking to the sense of loss and grief people have when they lose a child, and the lengths they’ll go to, to fill that void.

I'm wondering if the attachment to Ada was purely because she was cute and innocent or because she gave off some supernatural aura that made everything want to care for her. Because nothing really explains why the lamb mother was also obsessed with her. I also don't know if the lamb mother was trying to take Ada away out of love, if she was taking her to the father, or if she was actually trying to look out for the couple by taking her away and spare them pain.

I think the mother of the lamb just wanted her baby back. It was trying to do everything to keep the baby away from the couple, even leading her away at one point. She may of just wanted to protect her child.

mothers have an incredible biological bond to their babies, just like human mothers. a dairy farmer said he left the industry because it ruined hi. emotionally seeing how mother cows would cry and run after their newborns when they were taken away every year.

I think their attachment to Ada was the fact that they had lost their own child years before and saw it a gift or maybe a reincarnation of their own child in Ada. I think Adas goat mother was just trying to get her baby back cause she is her biomogical mother and she obviously was destressed when they took her away.

The mother lamb is attached to her lamb because it's her lamb. Any animal who's just given birth is incredibly attached to their young. María and her husband were probably attached because they had experienced the death of their child/children (see the cemitary scene) and saw the half human half lamb hybrid as a miracle sent to them to be their daughter.

No one seems to have mentioned how the painting on the windows looks like dripping blood. He is sanding and painting windows as part of his chores and when they both look out the window happily it's basically showing them as covered in blood. Both putting blame for the crime they committed and also foretelling their fate

Grýla isn't a witch but a troll or giantess who eats naughty children. She has a huge cat, the yule cat, that also eats children but those who don't get new clothes for Christmas. It's still very important to get new clothes before every Christmas in Iceland or else you will "go to the cat". I've always felt like you could make a decent horror movie out of the Icelandic Christmas traditions 🤣

I watched this film with friends. I'm used to watching foreign art house films and none of them are so I had to sit there for almost two hours listening to them scream at the screen about how nothing made any sense and if I tried to explain it they'd just say I was making it up.

@@rolandking640 Well if you go watch the trailer it portrays itself as a horror movie first and foremost. So if you go in expecting that and then get a metaphor inside a metaphor you're going to be annoyed. I was able to make the shift when I realized what it was but as they don't watch those sorts of movies they were just pissed that the trailer tried to make it look like a creature feature.

OMG... The look of the lamb with teary eyes really melted my heart.

As a farmer that has about 200 acres, we have about a dozen miniature cattle (Irish Dexters) and about 150 sheep with about half a dozen rams. Every lambing season we have about 70-90 lambs but we send most of them to either the auction or slaughter but we do sell/give a couple as pets. This movie kind of speaks to me because there was one lamb who couldn't make it on it's own so I raised it myself. I took it everywhere and even got it to lead in public and took it with me to tractor supply.

I felt bad for the mother sheep. They took her baby and didn't care how she felt at all. Felt they deserve it in a sense.

This! Exactly this. I can see Maria's reasoning that she saw her dead child in Ada and forcibly wanted to adobt her, but it completely blinded her of the fact that there deffinitely was something unnatural going on, which the mother sheep knew better and tried to take Ada to her actual father at the mountains. It also was upsetting that Peter had to pay the highest price and get killed, whilst it would've been a more fitting for Maria to be killed, as she was the one who killed Ada's actual mother and denied Ada from joining her biological parents in the appareant safety of the mountains.

Agreed, that was the main point of the story. They took someone else's child and didnt care for how their original parents or family would feel. It was Karma that hit them and later she realized , she needed to move on from her real daughter's death, living a good life and letting Ada live with her original father/parent.

Well, they are farmers, they basically have to kill livestock and eat, that's the natural lifestyle (at least their animals are mostly free-roaming, it's a decent life). I don't think, realistically speaking, anyone would have left creature with human body with the sheep! It wouldn't be responsible in a first place. Most people would go to TV and make money off it. Scientists would study her and apocalypses cults would spring, lol.

@@reginalannister2262 To an extent I'd agree with you, except she clearly felt disgraced and knew what she did was morally wrong, and wasn't doing it for any reason but her own desire for Ada. Hence why she buried the ewe instead of butchering her. Especially in a country like Iceland where the people aren't wasteful (and with livestock where there is little to no profit margin).

A lamb is a baby sheep. That's the only difference. A female sheep is known as a ewe, and a male sheep is known as a ram. Their offspring are called lambs.

I find it weird that the couple didn't find it strange at all to see a lamb-human hybrid, like the lady looked shocked for a moment but they both almost immediately were like "yup, we're gonna raise it & love it".

One of the yulelads is called Spoon licker, and the bad thing he does is lick your spoons.

For metaphors, this struck a chord with me about adoption. I was adopted at birth and my parents raised me, yet I do not share their blood. My biological family became present in my life when I was 8ish, and became a bigger influence on me. Because of this, I saw some symbolism in Lamb's story with my own.

I have to actively tell myself it's just a movie, because I cried for half an hour yesterday at how scared and sad Ada looked when she was taken away.

I found this movie to be a great metaphor for kidnapped children who ended up being "adopted" in a foreign country, only for them to learn later that : 1) they were never put up for adoption 2) their adoptive parents are actively pushing back against their birth parents. Ada got trafficked and the couple are (some of) the villains.

Maybe it's more like this.. the father/beast is a super natural deity, being - a fae or something from an unseen realm. On christmas he comes to give a virgin child (Ada is pure and innocent, so there may be some Christ allegories). The humans dealing with their grief take the child and begin to raise it as their own. Though Ada is somewhere between beast and human, ultimately conflicted with her existence. Karma comes to punish the mother as the father/beast comes back to take something she loved, her husband and Ada. Im not sure how Ada was meant to be raised, maybe at some point she was always meant to go to the realm the father came from or some other place. But because a sin was committed to obtain her and she was fought over, perhaps she was not able to live in the human world?? Or maybe its all just an allegory for innocence/happiness and grief/sin.

It happens more than one would think. Women who don't have support, resources or any chance are pushed into adoption and then the child gets adopted, away from their safety and the mother is just supposed to accept that.

My whole theater erupted into laughter when they first showed the full lamb body! 😝 personally… I love movies that give you something to think about long after you’re done watching them!

I saw it at a filmfest with everyone going in blind. When they revealed the baby lamb hybrid, there were gasps and hushed wtfs.

Feels kinda poetic that Maria (the faux mother) shot and killed Ada's birth mother and lost her husband (the faux father) by Ada's actual father shooting and killing him.

It surprises me the amount of people who didn't catch-on that the moral was "do not take what is not yours" and needing to learn to move on from traumatic events. Maria especially couldn't truly move on from losing her child, so she latched onto and claimed the first "baby" she could find. Maria took a baby from it's parents and killed the mother, so dad came and took back his baby and killed her husband. She learned the consequences of staying in the past, letting grief consume her, and honestly....kidnapping lmao

There was a great theory that it was mainly symbolic and what we're seeing isn't actually what's going in if you understand it metaphorically instead of literally that Ada isn't actually a lamb hybrid, but just an actual little girl but we don't see that in a literal sense. That the brother actually is Ada's dad. Peter got bored... then frisky... so he made a mistake. Later he invents a mysterious entity to explain the human-goat hybrid. He tries to shoot her to get rid of the evidence of his mishap, but he can't possibly kill his own child... Then he gets horny again, gets rejected, plays it cool, but then murders the person who's the reason why he got rejected, and again, blames everything on the previously invented mysterious entity... then he takes his child with him.

I find it has a metaphor for involuntary adoption. As an adopted kid who was lied about my adoption for quite some time and then when I was told I was adopted I was not allowed to do any further investigation and find out where I came from basically burying my biological mother, I was torn in two. Also my biological mother had me ripped from her arms. Ada didn’t ask for it, nor did her parents (the bio ones) and now everyone must pay the price.

I think the man lamb figured out adas mom was shot when she tried to take ada to him. So he came to get ada and shot the dad.

if we ever get a sequel to this film, i really hope ada is gonna be ok :( poor chilc was born into this troublesome life and probably didnt understand why her family was dealing with these awful issues... and being mistreated because of the way she looks. i feel that :(

I was thinking the exact same thing.

i think that the wife had an affair with her husbands brother in the past. him suggesting she left the door open willingly doesn’t seem like an accusation she would tolerate, so it indicates there’s some truth to it. a hint to a past between them. it also explains why he, too, becomes captivated by this child, as we clearly see his dismay at first, but he sees past it after seeing how happy it makes her. just something i noted

Its awful and Ada didn't even seem to want to go with, who was her actual father. I kind of hoped that her adoptive mom would try to find her or look for her, but it just ends and we don't really know what happened to Ada.

I feel awful for Maria too, she lost three children before this Ada. But I did think, why couldn’t they have let the sheep mom come live in the house with them? Like the cat and dog do? She could have seen the baby every day but wouldn’t have felt she had to take her anywhere. The only drawback might have been Ada seeing her all the time and comparing her to herself but she already saw sheep all the time.

It could also be that the lamb-human hybrid beings are just symbolic What actually happened is after they lost their child, they perhaps stole someone's child from them and then kept it as their own , the mother sheep that symbolises the actual mother of the child tried to take her back but was killed by her and then the brother tried to convince them to give her away but they couldn't, and in the end the father of child found out and took his child back

I cannot wait for the next iteration of this story, according to the writer/producers one of which is Nomi Rapace there will be another chapter of this riveting movie! I want to know what happened to the first Ada, did they find her body or was she taken by the Ram? I want to see home where he's taken Lamb Ada and if there are more of them! My guess is his numbers are dwindling which is why he was hell bent on getting his baby back. Will Ada make her way back to the farm, will Cat lead Maria and Petur to Lame Ada where Maria will find both Ada's? Finally, will Maria be pregnant with her dead husband's child, there is so much more to be told! This is what a great story does, it makes you obsess over the parts of the story that leave you hanging!

No, the faun is a goat-legged human, so kinda the opposite of this creature. Also "faun" is roman, the greek version is Pan, who is actually a smaller god. And he's not in norse mythology.

I'd say some sort of spirit of the wild, which is actually a good thing, in a way. The fact he used the gun shows his anger at the mother's death, otherwise he probably could have done something else.

watched this movie blind and unknowing of what i was about to sit 1h 46m through, honestly the funniest and most unsettling movie ive seen in a while

I think you’d like the show, “The Booth at the end”. I don’t want to spoil much but the best spoiler free description I can give is that the show poses the question: “How far are you willing to go to achieve your dream?” The characters have goals in life for themselves, or other family members/sometimes friends, and this mysterious man gives them tasks to make these wishes come true. The tasks can be as simple as buying flowers, or as scary as kidnapping, to building and setting off a bomb. It’s interesting to watch and question if characters are really willing to kill or traumatize others for their own personal gain.

Great interpretation as always. I've had mixed feelings regarding the movie but Ada was so damn cute. Also, just wanted to let you know there is an editing error at 16:36. "It was just a matter of time until they had to face their comeuppance" was said twice. Just in case you wanted to know :)

As a mother who lost my son at a young age, this film haunted me. The scene where they talked about the magazine article that said time travel was theoretically possible I knew at that moment they had lost a child. Just the way she said “maybe it’s possible to go back in time instead of just forward”. My sons death left me feeling like a lonely and dead ghost. Sort of like how the 2 main characters act before Ada the lamb 🐑 was born. His room is just like he left it before he died. 7 years have passed and I still sleep with his favorite blanket. This movie was an emotional one for me.

So, lamb is an object of purity, for some time of you telling the story it felt like she played a role of real second child after loss of the first one, she feels like something is off and parts are missing/not shown to her, then her "uncle" trying to give her grass looked kinda weird, you know, of course for the main plot he just didn't consider her like a human. It's interesting mom sheep came back again and again and then even tried to snatch baby away, this looked like she was a surrogate mother who grew love to her child. I don't know what to make out of the sheep dad, first they really played on this devil side, so I waited when Ade will start killing parents, but was sheep mom trying to get her to dad? Do sheep know who sheep people are? Wtf is that. So, I didn't expect him to come back for his child and do that only by killing real dad, it's either a "not on a nose" metaphore or just as you said a playing around sheep people theme, so big revealing in the end.

One thing that I think is important - at the end human father explained to Ada how to get home if she looks at the mountain or listens to the river. And she was capable to think as a human since she was raised by humans, all the love they gave her, she won't forget it for sure. I think she will maybe try to escape one day. Also, the ram shooting Ingvar in the throught so he can't scream for help or can't tell Ada to run or something... He is shut down like a lamb, silenced. Loved the movie. Only Icelanders, scandinavians in general, are able to make movies like this. Powerfull, without pathetic scenes, just slowly building up a beautiful tence story. Reminded me of the movie "Border", 2018 (Grans).

Ingvar did NOT deserve that bruh 😭😭😭 He was such a good dad. Anyways, this film is absolutely fantastic, despite it being an extremely slow burn.

I haven't watched this yet, but I just thought the goat man was some kind of species of god or demigod that protects the wilderness and every so often has to have a child and teach them how to protect the wilderness. I came to this conclusion because when I thought of goat man I immediately thought about Pan the Greek god of the wilderness who has some goat like features.

Fascinating as always! I want to recommend a movie called "I'm not a Serial Killer" for your next video. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out exactly what is happening/ going to happen in movies, but this one really kept me guessing throughout. And even the ending left me with a hmmmm.... So definitely something I think you'd be interested in!

Not addressed is the homestead with taken over by the brothers after their parents died (the mock graveyard marked the recent death of the couple's daughter and two other graves-the brother's parents). Don't miss this one. It's surprising well done, thoughtful, and memorable. This is a modern fairy tale that is very sneaky.

This movie is kind like a dark fairy tale but brought to live and almost tell couple of lessons that can represent being a parent and not steal.

At 11:17 you can actually see the thing reflected in adas eye. Nice little detail there

Its super comforting to me that you remind me so much of my dearly departed cousin PJ and like him you are an ageless wonder my friend

The only reason I didn't get bored watching this was because I was waiting for everything to go down when the creature reveal, that was set up in the first 5 minutes of the movie, finally took place.. Can't say the pay off was particularly good, but the rest of the movie is kind of a chore to get through without that.

That’s because most peoples brains are fried with instant gratification and flashiness lol. Just enjoy it for what it is. Have fun with the strange experience. It’s just a movie, it doesn’t last forever.

I find it funny how you call all the full-grown sheep lambs.

Pretty cool to see Icelandic actors on your channel. Those dudes work hard, since there's not a lot of work for actors in Iceland those dudes have to be prepared to act in EVERYTHING. Stage, children's shows etc etc

I heard this movie was slow and so I hesitated and hesitated watching it until last night. Glad I gave it a chance. It kept me interested and it was never boring. Well done story and beautiful cinematography with great performances.
