I think Ella actually switched with Catherine when she was being killed to spare her the pain of her death. she stated and I quote" I can bare the sharpest stones so you don't feel their pain", but another's free will is his alone(referring to George's will to murder his wife and she unable to do anything to stop him) that was somewhat her gift to cath as she was gifted same by the woman before her.

The movie is about women victims of domestical violence, with a lot of religious ideas like good people/martyr will go in heaven and bad people in hell. I really liked it. I can't watch horror or really scary films because they give me night terrors. I was able to watch this with no issue. It is more of a story telling movie. I really like that ghosts are hinted about while the family goes on with their lives, and that ghosts can't necessarily do things but influence. Even though I wouldn't categorize this as horror, it has better story telling than a lot of scary/suspenseful movies imo. There's a lot going on at one time and in the background, and a lot of "suggests" things without having to show it.

I completely agree. It’s more of a thriller movie. It’s the family drama that brought the real life “horror” and the ghosts were more of an element of aid and influence. It was the people story line that was the focus of the film.

The spiritual weaving isn't as off the wall as you think. Both in Greek and Norse mythology the life story and faith of every living being is represented by a thread woven by the three godesses of destiny prepresenting birth, life and death, the latter tasked with cutting the thread when it's your time to eh well, kick the bucket. And all those individual threads together makes up the fabric of the world/reality/ cosmos and is a direct link to the gods and the spritiual life. That's probably where the writers got it from

I came here to say exactly this. It's also a big part of Mesoamerican spirituality, and along with midwifery and medicine one of the gifts given to the first woman from the gods. She, in turn teacher her daughters who teach theirs and on and on connecting this generation to the very first. Added to the symbology you mentioned, the thread of life is also related to the umbilical cord, which is again related to the above (a link of both blood and knowledge going back forever). And even today we talk about "the fabric of space and time."

@@rae9450. There's a conversation between the sheriff and the wife where she says "they said it's possible she was dead longer, right?" They normally do that stuff with liver temperature but considering she was gutted, it might be hard to tell. The internal body temperature wouldn't cool at a predictable rate because it's ... Open With that said... The drugs in her shake can, the smashed phone in the kitchen, no sign she fought back or even reacted to being chopped, the fact Cole was there most of the morning/afternoon (when would the 'burglary' have occured?), him leaving his classes early unexpectedly (explains motive - he caught her leaving), his fingerprints on the axe despite him having a hired hand to chop wood, the packed bags in the car, the separate checking account, the little girl possibly remembering that they were planning to leave, the drag marks in the yard, the bruises on her back and arms from being thrown around. There is literally so much evidence and he couldn't have hidden it all. Of course, everything above is circumstancial but with the two witnesses (I think Willis would come forward) you create a plethora of motive, opportunity is established by him leaving class early, and means via the murder weapon with his prints. A good defense attorney would suggest Eddie as thebkiller. The affair (motive), how his hands were on the murder weapon at one point (means), imply he was possibly involved with Willis too, etc (motive). Say Eddie had opportunity because of Cole babysitting, and sprinkle in a little of his troubled past. Imply he equated Cath to his mother and that's why he killed her in the same place his mom died. That would likely be enough reasonable doubt for an acquittal. Luckily the husband is facing trial with an omnipotent judge now

I JUST finished watching this and came to find out about the ending; this movie was actually phenomenal minus the ending, which is really unfortunate, because then you get reviewers shitting on the entire movie when in fact it was beautifully done. The movie really seemed to follow in the footsteps of other more supernatural dramas such as Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor, where you're forced to (or maybe not so much 'forced' if you're a little stubborn and ignorant) remember that ghosts were once living, breathing, feeling people with all their own stories and sadness. Anyway -- I actually recommend this movie, just don't get stoked about the ending because it is... strange.

I actually loved the movie. The philosophical themes and concepts really resonate with the way I see life and reminds me of reiki. And the whole thing about domestic violence was portrayed accurate and realistically. I think we are too used to monsters, demons and stuff that we don't understand anymore that the living, us HUMANS, are FAR SCARIER than ANY monster could ever be. The whole domestic violence thing IS scary, because it's REAL and it HAPPENS, and not long ago people would not care or not bat an eye to it! Of course I love demon movies as well, I like to keep my horizons broadened and open, hence why I think that when watching this movie one should keep an open mind and take it for what it is in essence rather that what we may have led to want or believe it to be. I think the movie is rather deep, and quite enjoyable. Justine is the MVP here lol. I hope some of y'all were able to enjoy it as I have. :)

I don’t think this review did the movie justice. I honestly thought this movie would be a waste of time but seeing the cast I thought I’d give it a try. The writers did a great job explaining the theology of Swedenborg and working his philosophy into the plot. George is also a well-written sociopath with the way he subtly controls his wife, love-bombs her, exerts his control over her “out of concern”. And having someone like Foyd affirm Cath’s beliefs that there’s a spirit present in her house actually made me cry a little. She has such a good support system from the community, which can drive a sociopath (like George) crazy because the stronger the victim’s relationships with others the less power he has over her. The characters drive the plot forward and it’s incredibly well done. It’s now on my spooky October movie list.

So, I can agree with elements of your review, however I honestly enjoyed every beat of this movie, I never felt that it lagged for any moment of its run time. Now, my personal opinion, I think that George fed her eating disorder and continued to shame her about it because it allowed him another element of control. I think that Amanda Seyfried’s character has one of the best character arch’s that I have seen in a long long. Well done movie and well done review.

The throwing up the food was a body image issue, the child was to illustrate her being a mom, and the move with him to the house was all to illustrate she was sacrificing for him and he didn't deserve any of it. Alternatively, and I believe this is the way the filmmaker intended it - was this was all the things that the man used to keep her a prisoner (as seen in the scene where she goes to an all female art group, and the guy is seen as hungry afterwards - why didn't he just make himself a sandwich, like any guy in real life would have?) The entire movie has an anti-male feel to it, not like other movies that illustrated similar cheating husbands or murderous spouses which always showed only the baddie in the story as being someone who is doing wrong. This movie went out of its way to portray most men as bad, to give support to a popular myth. :/

@@erin_the_extra2329 I dunno. You could just as easily argue that giving her body issues was another way for him to control her. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but when threads like these have such a vaguely defined connection to the overall picture, they may as well have not included them at all. Too many subplots could be easily stripped from the movie without a single thing being lost. No joke, you wouldn’t even need a rewrite. Just edit the scenes out and a new viewer would be none the wiser. This is not a cohesive film.

I remember liking the themes and how the movie subverted the genre, but the ending was just so unsatisfying for me...like how the first ghost wife isn't free even in death her husband still harasses her. At first I thought the twist was gonna be that the ghost lady was the evil one and her ghost husband was trying to keep her away. Also they introduced aspects like having a child at a young age, and developing an eating disorder without really doing anything with it. It's a shame because I thought that could have been more interesting, but I suppose maybe the point was that (like in real life) things aren't always tied up neatly into a thematic bow at the end. The main character dies, and although not all the things that happened played into her character arc, they still happened.

I think the movie isn't even about fearing death which is why Catherine dying doesn't seem so devastating to me. Movie seemed more like it's about the connections and energies about how woven life is, in and after death. Justine's weaving skill might be a symbolism for that. And in the end justice is always served, may that be in or after life.
