To be fair, Esther was an extremely talented manipulator, even pointed out that she showed signs of a master manipulator, and given their marriage was already filled with issues, and his wife had been an extreme alcoholic for awhile, its easy to see how he could be skeptical that a kid was capable of all this.

@@crystaleuwing8411 Red flags that only were visible to the rest of the family because they werent her target. And it was made clear in the movie that their relationship had been rocky for awhile and that the mothers drinking and actions had led to their daughters accident. Combined with a.. (therapist? Cant remember the word) that checked Esther out and declared her to be perfectly fine, its easy to see why the father fell for Esthers manipulations. He aint a likable character but out of all of them he reacted quite how a normal, non-paranoid person would. Not to mention that in his eyes the problems occuring as they adopted Esther would be likely because of his wifes inability to let go of Jessica and her grief making her shut out Esther from her heart. Its a thing that can happen.

Because she manipulated him because he is who she was after. The mum was a alcoholic, he was tricked into thinking that the mum broke her arm, the mum slapped her and something clearly happened with max and the ice and the mum was clearly being careless. I feel so bad for everyone who liked this comment because clearly they didn’t watch the movie just like you. The kids never warn the parents that Ester is evil or dangerous. She scares both of them into keeping their mouths shut. The brother (Daniel) stayed in the beginning that he didn’t like ester simply because she was weird and got all this attention he wasn’t getting, but he never told his parents that she hurt him or threatened him. Even when the mom point blank asks him and Max if ester ever did anything bad or something to scare them, they flat out tell the mom no and that Ester is fine.

Honestly, what is even John and Kate's relationship? What kind of husband is he to not trust anything his wife says? It's like their relationship is solely built on lust, and no trust.

I got frustrated at that. I get that giving birth to a stillborn child is traumatic. Worthy of going to therapy for a while to work through your feelings. While not the EXACT same, I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks with my very first pregnancy. Not uncommon, but still it hurt. I now have two kids that I love dearly (even if they get on my nerves a lot). Do I feel like I need to fill the hole of that lost child? No. We wanted two kids, we have two kids. The way the movie portrayed this feeling, felt very wrong to me. Like, you have two kids who are in Elementary school, one of which is DEAF! I would have shifted that unplaced love onto my current kids and let them know that while they all lost their baby sister, mommy loves them just as much as before. Having the rose bush where the stillborn's ashes were spread? That is a lovely memory that will keep coming back each year. I would have talked with the current kids to see if THEY would want to bring another child into the family by way of adoption. Let them be included. There were many points in which the kids should have been included in the adoption process (meeting potential adoptees, progress check ups with the kids after adoption "How are you feeling with your new sibling in the house?"). All in all, I tried to suspend my belief very hard for this concept, couldn't fully.

Funny thing was: I was actually adopted from Russia. I was 9 when this movie came out, my siblings went to go see it. They were freaked out by me and I never knew why until I saw the movie 😂

This is by far the best horror movie ever made in history. No CGI monsters, no demon possession, no excessive blood and gore, no cliched concept, just psychological terror. Nothing can break the atmosphere and tension it creates.

The child actor (Isabelle Furhman)did such a magnificent job portraying the evil orphan. Her performance was the highlight for me Strangely, we haven't seen more movies with her as popular as this one.

Something I had desperately wanted to see, was how the therapist reacted to realizing she got manipulated by a 30 yr old woman. It pissed me off how the therapist and the husband had ganged up on Kate and were ignoring her just because she had ONE accident due to drinking. Granted - the accident could have been extremely tragic, but she had been working on herself since?? They were acting as if she had such a long history. As if she put herself and others in danger over 10x?? Idk it seemed exaggerating to me.

The alternate ending was more crazy. She survives and there’s a scene with her dolling herself up to relook like a child after her fighting the family. When the police arrive to the house she walks down the stairs and she’s like “Hi I’m Esther” it was so creepy lol

You made a mistake: It is clearly shown that when Kate kicked Esther in the face, she also snapped Esther’s neck, killing her.

This is probably the most believable horror movie with the most believable reactions to the situations because in everybody's eyes it's a little helpless girl so everybody has sympathy and believes her

That's what I was thinking! Granted, the way she killed it was pretty violent, but at least she was putting it out of its misery. I'd be worried about the boy who shot it. Of course they made it seem like he didn't know badly the bird was going to be hurt, but the parents shouldn't have let him have the gun without teaching him not to shoot at any living things. He was the one who killed the bird, Esther just made sure that it didn't suffer.

Well I think his reaction shows that either he didn't really mean to hit the bird or didn't fully realize the gravity of the damage it would cause. The cold heartless reaction from Esther on the other hand shows her cruel mind. That being said, I blame the parents more than anything for giving him a gun to shoot without supervision.

You should keep in mind that he's still a kid... He probably didn't think about what it means to shoot at a bird with a paintball gun. He probably didn't think one second about the consequences. And I think he didn't shoot the bird for the sake of it but more out of anger about Esther. And let's be honest - even adults do stupid things and only realize what they did when it's too late. I think he was just venting off. Sure it doesn't excuse what he did, not at all, it clearly is a bad way of dealing with your emotions - and it doesn't mean the parents weren't responsible because they should have taught their son to never aim at animals or other humans. But it doesn't mean that he has any problems. He's clearly upset after he realized what he did and he feels guilty. Seems like a pretty normal and healthy reaction to something like that. Esther on the other hand is the stone faced killer and you can totally see that she doesn't kill the bird out of compassion but for pure fun. And come on... Crushing it with a stone? You could've just snapped its neck... If you are so worried about the bird suffering you should pick some cleaner method to end it.

@@SinginVampireBlog I think it should also be pointed out that he had a small paintball gun, probably with the knowledge that it wasn't really going to do any harm if he did hit someone by accident. It would hurt, yes, but unless he was really unlucky, or a really good shot, there wouldn't be more than a bruise. Of course, it's more deadly on a small creature, but if your only concept is "small paintball gun is basically harmless", a child isn't really going to consider that the difference in a bird's anatomy would do so much more.

Remember she was just a child therapist. Esther has bested actual criminal psychologists before. And the therapist was given all the fake documents from her past therapies as an orphan, so she wasn't doing a full psychoanalysis or anything, just a checkup to see how well she was getting on as an adoptee.

Its a shame in a way given i was adopted from a abusive family and not to mention after my ex died from liver failure and transplant rejecting. On top of my biological son i adopted exes daughter after her dad rejected her. Most kids who are adopted are often very loving and kind natured. Who only wants a family of their own and to be accepted by said family.

Honestly after rewatching this movie I realize that with Esther because she is different she feels frustrated that she is stuck in this little girl body and cannot prove to others that she is an adult. And because it is hard to explain this without people looking at her crazy which is probably how she ended up at a mental institute. And her infatuation with having a dad or having a man around is her knowing that she lacked having love with another man in a romantic way and not in the fatherly way

There is one thing I'm really bothered about Kate. I feel that she was just trying to use an orphan girl to relieve herself of the guilt and grievance she feels for the accident with Max and her stillborn child. And I think her husband also think so too. That's why he ask her decision again before the adoption and also try to be the best father he can for the adopted little girl. Thus, when Kate tell all the bad things about their adopted daughter, he tries to defend all the more which looks stupid to the audience because he thought she's just not going well with all the trying-to-relieve-herself thing. Think about how it would looks like if the adopted girl is actually normal child. I'm pretty sure that if I were in the position of the husband, things would have gone the same way.

Yeah the husband gets a bad rap People forget that Kate is a known alcoholic who almost let her daughter die from drinking Known alcoholics always have a million excuses She didn’t go to AA which would’ve have helped substantially The husband was trying to make up for his own mistakes and not let his wife succumb to her drinking which would hurt another child The more times you watch the better because there’s so much to unpack and evidence of the husbands “dense” nature

It's a lot easier and a lot more accepted to just hate on husband characters in horror-esque movies, especially when their wife seems like their going through a tough time and the guy is kind of tired of it all. Clearly we see that Kate has a ton of issues and she did basically nothing to try to actually fix those issues. Going sober alone isn't enough when you're still suffering through trauma and need thorough mental help. It is also kind of ridiculous that she wants to adopt a child to help move on from having a stillborn when she already has 2 other children that she should clearly focus her love towards, because who knows how much those kids lacked motherly love when she was an alcoholic and hung over her stillborn child. Her husband tried to max sure she was ready to adopt, he's the one keeping her from relapsing on alcohol addiction and yes while he made a mistake in the past (10 years ago from what we heard) he's actively trying to be a good father and supportive husband. It's only after she assures him that she wants to adopt, then starts to get paranoid that he starts to lose faith in her. People argue that she has a reason to be paranoid, and while yes she does, he is also being manipulated by Esther since he is never present when Esther chooses to cause issues, which is the entire point. So yeah, I feel like people are just giving this man too much shit when in reality he's seeing things from the eyes of someone being manipulated, meaning he is forcibly made to be completely oblivious. But side character husbands are usually made to be complete assholes in most horror-esque movies so I get why people jump to the conclusion that he is one. Yes Kate is our main character, but she is also a shitty person who has trauma because of her shitty actions, and somehow we're suppose to sympathize with that? Idk man

Further on how much I love this little girl. The original script called for Esther to be very Little Bo Peep with blonde hair and pin curls and pastel clothes, but Isabelle Fuhrman hit it so hard that they rewrote the appearance. And she did great!

She moves in. Her previous family died in a house fire. Her bully brake her own leg. The nanny responsible for her disappear and end up dead. Their son who constantly rip on her who looks 12 wet his bed. The mom stops her car on a downwards slopes and get out without pulling the hand beak with her deaf child in the car. Honestly with regards to the prequel, Isabelle Fuhrman definitely has a baby face and hell, there are snapchat and TikTok filters that can make you look really young or really old. Really the only edits they would have to make with regards to the actress would be her height, hiding her curves, and fixing the lighting/shadows, all of which a first year film student in high school could do given enough time and instruction.

This is one of my favourite psychological horrors and I had no idea they're making a prequel, oh my god, I bloody love this

One hint that Esther wasn't as young as she claimed, was her obsession with the song "the Story of Love", which was a clue that she wasn't actually a child, since it's a song that most children that would be the age Esther was passing herself off as, wouldn't have likely heard.

I miss Isabelle Fuhrman.. this movie showed how much potential she has as an actress

This movie was released during a drought of good horror. I was so surprised my mom and I both liked the film. I see a lot of people online referencing the film on occasion and it seems that most people have a positive view of it.

One of the things that I remembered from this movie, other than Esther, was the ending where the mom breaks Esther's neck when she kicks her in the head, leaving her to drown in the lake. Stood out to me the most.

She went on to another family at the end so I don't know why people think she died. It's the actual ending

I have to say, as Ester suppose to be Russian or something similar, her behavior, way of dressing and how she eats is not so strange considering her "age".

I’m so early, Esther wasn’t even abandoned yet.

Alot of my mom associated memories are horror related. She was a big horror head when she was alive and i sort of grew up on it

Love that film, it was sad tho. But the husband there was better than the one in this one. 🙃

I also love the portrayal of the long term psychological effects on a human being and the outcome of the entire situation. Very good job by the creators of this film

Orphan is legit my favourite movie. I've seen it so many times and it's still just as good as the first time round.

This movie was amazing! Maaaaan the part when she took out her teeth had us all in the theater like "NO WAAAAYYY!" This flim is a must watch.

Whats scary is the adopted daughter getting it on with the foster dad trope actually happened in real life. The movies story wouldve hit too close to home if esther and the dad actually plotted kates murder

It happens a lot in real life. Woody Allen legit married his adopted daughter

1-Is say that kick alone didn’t kill her since she has the body of a child it likely broke her neck and she drowned 2-it is a fact the husband got what he deserved. He held his own wife to her issues and ignored the fact he had an affair. It depends On how you slice it on which is worse but both of those aspects don’t make for a happy marriage . It also doesn’t help that he was blind to the fact she was doing it on purpose.

I love this movie. Such a classic. Isabelle Furhman is one of the best child actresses I’ve ever seen.

Esther's biggest mistake was trying to kill the mother and daughter after she was found out instead of escaping. (yes she was crazy) Esther tried to act innocent after she try to kill the mother, but the mother broke her neck and her body sink at the bottom of the lake.

@@SuperJutah She failed at this and she also tried to act like a child again even though she was found out and murdered the mother's husband. Crazy killers tend to make mistakes.
