This actually looks like a good werewolf movie especially interesting to include the battle of the Somme. Werewolf movies just work best when set in the past whether it’s Victorian, Edwardian early 1900s-the makers understood that

He most likely took them in because he never knew if Ed was cured for good. And he wasn't. He was human again only because he had the silver bullet stuck inside him. The autopsy scene in this movie is one of the single coolest and most creative ideas I've seen in a horror movie since John Carpenter's 'The Thing'. The idea that the victim becomes "cocooned" inside the beast as part of the curse, and emerges when it's killed is just... - chef's kiss - Hats off to who ever came up with that idea.

That’s actually part of some werewolf mythology! In one story, a rich woman was married to the towns leader, and she was cursed to be a werewolf, so her husband tried to hide her true nature, eventually the town killed her in her wolf form, dragging the body into the town to her husbands horror, they skin the wolf only to reveal her inside, there’s other stories where something similar happens.

As a French, very cool to see the Werewolf myth mixed up with the Gevaudan Beast, which is one of the most prominent French myths. A french movie about this myth is Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups, 2001), one of the most high-profile productions in French cinema history. More like a fever dream directed by the maker of Silent Hill, but an enjoyable ride with quite great set designs

I like the incorporation of the mom letting herself be shot through by the silver bullet, because it feels like a play on how sometimes a werewolf cure has to do with love, like a Loved one has to do the killing blow to put them down for good like in adaptations of The Wolfman. Not sure exactly what the lore justification is there, like a reverse True Love's Kiss, _True Love's Kill._ The mom's blood could have mixed with the bullet entering her wolf-son as some sort of biological ritual or a symbol of christ's sacrifice, acting as some sort of partial nulification of the curse since they're tying it with Judas' silver. IDK, but normally I'd hate a random sacrifice like that but it works here, either tactically to distract the wolf long enough to get shot, or pathologically/magically having her blood sacrifice be a necessary component for it to work, like an organ transplant works best when it's doner is biologically close. Her blood/life-force helped the silver from being rejected? could have. I like the aspects of mystery with how this curse works, and where exactly it falls. it feels ancient and vaguely unknowable; not lost knowledge but knowledge yet to be discovered.

I really like the premise here. The silver coins Judas got for betraying Jesus worked as a sort of anti-Holy Grail artifact. Though it does raise the question of how the coins originally got cast into the form of silver teeth or why. I think the way the curse started could have been a bit better though. Instead of some rich landowners being greedy, some kind of betrayal would have been more fitting. Perhaps the Englishmen breaking some kind of agreement or something like that would help lean into the betrayal angle better.

Well that’s why Silver is supposed to hurt supernatural beasts. Because silver was exchanged for a life, silver became cursed by God and so it hurts “unholy” creatures. An alternative reasoning is that Silver is just a unique metal in general so artists/creators use that idea to give it special properties. Ex: Silver and the Moon are usually shown to have a connection so it stands to reason that silver would hurt “moon creatures”

The pathologist specifically hunted down the teeth and specifically melted those down to make the bullets. It probably had something to do with using the Silver originally used to start the curse. There is a folklore association where you are, allegedly, able to find the cure for poison in the same area as the poison. So, for example, if you find aconite then, in close proximity, you would expect to find a plant acting as an antidote. Take the cursed thing, melt it down (and exorcise it by flame) and create a blessed object to counteract the curse

For one thing, the creatures in this movie seem "werewolf-esque", not actual werewolves. It would, therefore, not make sense for them to have "regenerative powers". If anything, the take here is cursed humans being somewhat mutated and turning feral. So by not having them heal instantly is a better option, especially when you see that these creatures attack quickly and ferociously, not really giving anyone enough time to properly aim and fire a shot, and usually going after unarmed women and children. :/

You sir have great taste! Gunna check this film out for sure. I will say & it may well be because I was a young man when I first saw these.... I always thought the Ginger Snaps films were a great take on the Werewolf genre. Girls instead of men, said girls "becoming women" setting the Werewolf issues in motion. I hope one day we'll get another American Werewolf In X Film, the Paris one was Eh so/so but I feel nowadays CGI mixed with good practical effects we could get something pretty damn impressive!

@@pirate_duck4985 the Ginger Snaps films were definitely a welcome addition to the werewolf genre. I was a bit too young to appreciate them when they came out, but I rewatched them recently and understood the concepts way better as an adult. As far as Paris goes, I actually watched that one again two nights ago and came away with these two thoughts. 1. I actually really like the college-buddy aspect of it. Though a tad basic, the story has a few smart comedic bits in it. 2. I think if, using Blender or UE4/5, the werewolf CGI were replaced with models of the London werewolf...it might just make the film better all around. A lot of the imagery is solid, especially in the cemetery, but the sense of dread is lost with the wolf models looking like monkey-lions

The London Werewolf is INCREDIBLE for when it was made! I remember first seeing that transformation when I was WAY too young haha & it was genuinely terrifying because it was essentially a man getting prosthetics added shot by shot. Nope. LOTS of cultures have similar stories of curses and a version of their own type of magic, which can be positive as well, like for example bringing rains to a drought-stricken land, boosting fertility, astrology, etc. For example - European fairy tales had a mix of good and bad magic, and clearly showed the use of magic sometimes as a plus if used by people who weren't driven by greed or self interest, while those who were usually had those bad habits met with a bad end or suffered from bad karma in the process. If you are going use the point of roaming travelers being known for magic/curses as being negative, you have to look at various fairy tales and apply the same consistent logic there. Also, it depends on your perspective. A curse might seem negative to a person that receives it, but the person casting it might have a good reason for doing it, like for protection or for driving evil from a place, like this movie clearly illustrates. :/

I think the only part that really bugged me with this movie was the scene with the maid being attacked and her hiding that fact. Firstly, I thought it silly that she decided to pull down laundry alone, knowing that there's a dangerous beast lurking around, so dangerous in fact that there's a large mob of people hunting it down. Probably would be smart to do outdoor chores with other people and some form of protection, but this could just be chalked up as a poor character trait. Secondly, it didn't make sense for her to hide the fact that she'd been attacked. From the scene in the building with the beast, it seemed pretty obvious to me that they were hiding the fact that someone being attacked by the beast would be turned into a beast as well. So for what reason would the maid have to hide the fact that she was attacked? Anyways, I just felt like that part was forced so that she could turn inside the house and attack the father because reasons, instead of being natural.

This looks like it'd be quite good! Personally, my favourite werewolf film is Dog Soldiers - great movie 👍 I love how spindly the werewolves are in it - much more reedy/sinewy than in most other depictions. Plus Sean Pertwee and Liam Cunningham are fucking _awesome_ in it!

‘The case study of Vanitas’ anybody? I had never heard of the beast of gevaudan until recently and now I’ve seen an interpretation of it both here and in ‘the case study of Vanitas’ in the last month! Loved both takes on the real life event!

Just a heads up, the term you used at 3:17 to describe the Romani travelers is largely viewed as a slur.

Wow what a coincidence, I watched this film last night! It was a good watch, bit of a slow burn but could tell the writer/ director was heavily influenced by the thing which I really appreciated. The ending was a bit of a let down but overall a solid movie 7/10

Small nitpick here At 1:35 (I am not sure if that was irony I got a feeling it was). So in case it was: Gasmasks, as far as I know, didnt always work as both sides, naturally, were interested in producing more deadly gas that could bypass the enemies gasmasks. So while they helped, they didnt always protected u 100%.

I don't think its related to werewolves more another supernatural creature alltogether, the only things it share with werewolves is the body transformation but its not only on full moon and the silver weakness but silver was always seen as a 'holy" metal and is the weakness of a lot of supernatural things related to christianism. Its refreshing to see something that is not about vampire or werewolves for once!

Yes! And another observation that I had is that the creature was out doing the day as well.. being that the ones who are bitten are “cursed” you’ll think that they’ll have to change under the full moon which isn’t the case in this film!

Many consider Silver to be cursed by God, so it is an unholy metal, cursed by a divine being to sear the unholy with. The connection to Judas gives credence to Silver being a cursed material, Silver exchanged for a life... Note that gold wasn't just a sign of wealth but also was used to revere gods with. Silver generally isn't used to revere a god with unless they are a lesser god or demigod who has less than 'holy' powers in their pantheon.
