Lakeside Amusement Park FINALLY opens their Zyklon coaster!

After 5 years of waiting and uncertainty, Lakeside Amusement Park in Denver, CO has finally opened their Zyklon coaster. Built by Pinfari in 1973, this Zyklon/Z64 model operated at various amusement parks, most recently at Fun-Plex where it was known as the Big Ohhhh! As the old saying goes, "better late than never," we commend the Krasner family and Lakeside Amusement Park for doing what it takes to get this coaster running again.

I’m glad to hear this. I love Lakeside. I didn’t realize the Cyclone wasn’t running. I hope they get it working again. It’s a great ride.

...it was probably less costly to get the Zyklon prepared and running than the cost of repairing(?) the Cyclone, a much larger and complex physical structure (plus there is that nasty lawsuit connected to the Cyclone that may have required Lakeside to evaluate its defense of the situation). All in all great news about the already 50 year old vintage "old school" metal Zyklon brought back to life. Thats the cool thing about Lakeside, its vintage thrills, not the extreme jarring thrill rides of other parks. Yes, WE need to support this historic treasure amusement park !

I happened to visit Lakeside on September 1st and was one of the first Lakeside park visitors to ride the Zyklon for its reopening there that night! I was responsible for providing RCDB with the September 1st opening date. It is a pretty smooth ride for its age and is a good welcome addition to the park! With Cyclone SBNO since roughly May of 2022, it is good to once again see a major coaster operating at Lakeside other than the Wild Chipmunk! As of right now, the park has been referring to it as the Pinfari, which hopefully does not become the permanent name, since that is the coaster manufacturer’s name. The coaster model’s name is Zyklon, the German spelling and pronunciation for Cyclone, so that won’t work either. Hope they give it a different name! Many suggestions have been made by myself and others. I have it on good authority that we very likely will be seeing Cyclone finally come back to normal operation next season as it test ran with water barrels in the cars on Friday.

So what are the problems with the park overall? I've heard that since a large hailstorm hit the park is hasn't been returned to it' classic art deco glory days.

@@easynhonest The only issues now are 3 rides that are currently not operating. Two rides are currently being refurbished and were taken apart last year; the Ferris Wheel and the Hurricane (flying scooters). The Cyclone hasn’t been operating because of a guest inflicted accident and some refurbishment during the downtime. The art deco never left. Sure some lights were broken in the hail, but most of them have been replaced since. Only a few signs and rides are needing partial light replacement. The art deco buildings and structures have remained intact. When Cyclone returns next season (it’s been said it will be back next summer) and once the Ferris Wheel and Hurricane are rebuilt and reopened, the park will only have one non operating ride with Dragon. They just closed for the season after yesterday’s final day of operation.

Its great to see this coaster running again. I don't know how many thousands of times I rode this coaster but it was a lot. The last time I rode it was in 1999 when we dismantled it and moved it to Celebration City in Branson.

Oh, cool! Yes, I visited three summers ago and this coaster was SBNO, and it looked nearly ready. Great to hear it finally opened.

The park installed an all new, computer operated braking system which takes lots of time to test, calibrate, adjust, etc.

I don’t know why anyone would go to Lakeside. It is so run down, dirty, and unsafe. It is literally falling apart. They should invest in maintenance in what they already have before they start putting in anything new. Lakeside used to be soooo amazing, but it has been neglected. I hope someone’s puts money into it someday to restore it; not to change everything.

It won’t let me edit my comment. Obviously it should have said “I hope someone puts money into it…”

If the park was unsafe, it wouldn't be open. And the accident on the Cyclone wasn't the park's fault either. That was caused by a rider's stupidity. Yes, it does need better upkeep and at least a few gallons of paint. It could use a new owner with bigger pockets (hope the universe grants us those pockets) but owner Rhoda Krasner (rightfully so) doesn't trust anyone who wants the park as she obvious wants its historic heritage preserved (as it should).@@bestill88

I just hope in the worst case scenario they turn Lakeside into an historical site. I remember going to birthday parties every year there, I have such good memories there. 🤍 Or they can turn it into a horror maze when the summer is finished 🤷
