Lake Speed's 90's NASCAR Thunderbird Resurrection: Running 780hp Wide Open at 75 Years Old!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Lake Speed is a retired 90s NASCAR racer with a couple things still left over... Last year we pulled one of his old Ford C3 engines out of the dust for a full modern build increasing the horsepower from 480 to 780! Now at age 75, Lake Speed will hop in his Thunderbird for the first time since 2003 and lay on it wide open at the Virginia International Raceway road course! This is the same small block Ford C3 engine from the build series and dyno videos we did with Lake Speed Jr over the past year!

The last time Lake Speed drove this car was in 2003 when he did some vintage racing events with it. Back then the engine was worn out and barely making 500hp. Now 20 years later with the newly revived Ford C3 engine under the hood making 780+hp Lake gets to experience his favorite car in a whole new way! Lake Speed Retro Shirts: stapletonautoworks.com

My father is long gone now, so it's always nice to see father and son coming together and doing something they both like doing. Trust me, make time to spend with your father or son that is away from the tv or computer before you don't any time left. Just spending time together fishing on a river bank with out a cell phone to get in the way or something is memories you will hold on to the most. I so wish I could of done one more fishing trip or gone to the track one more time with my father before he started going down hill.

Mitchell, Thank you. What you have done so far, Lake Speed and family being just one example on film is like writing the history book for future generations. My father brought me to the track to watch as soon as I was out of diapers, 1963. A 1/3 mile track in Danbury CT. We we're there every Saturday night until they closed in '80's. The memories your videos evoke make my day. Seeing Lake Speed run around the track and repair his ride at his seniority give me hope that I have a few more years to play with my sons and grandkids. Thanks again and keep writing that book!

This is bad ass! My grandfather was a diehard drag racer. He passed away at 79yo from cancer and was driving a blown 392 hemi in a front engine dragster the year prior. He had cancer and was very weak the year he passed which is the only reason he didn’t race at 79. These old fellas are rare these days. They were just built different than our generation. It's VR1 for me! This brought a little tear to my eyes, brings back many memories! My wife and I's first date was to Michigan Super Speedway in the early 90's, she had never seen the NASCAR guys in action, and it was an awesome experience for her. I then took her for a ride in my 8 second Vega drag car at the drag strip, and shortly there-after we were married! lol I'm one of those guys you talked about who can no longer hardly bend over and tie my own shoes at 58 years old. My spine is overrun with arthritis, and it is destroying my legs and feet. It feels like I'm walking on sharp, hot rocks all the time, and my legs and feet feel like they are on fire. I go through many nights that I cannot sleep, last night was one of them. But I still build my own drag cars, build my own engines, transmissions and rear ends. I will not let it stop me until it cripples me so bad I no longer have a choice. This was a great video, and it was amazing seeing Lake back behind the wheel again. Appreciate you going through all of the effort to do this.

I think you might be on to something here. The excitement that Lake Speed had was amazing. Reuniting the old NASCAR stars with their old cars might be a series of videos in your future. I watched the video with Mark Martin driving his old car and he seemed genuinely excited to drive that car for a couple of laps too. Rusty Wallace too when he drove Midnight after it was restored. Maybe you can find people that own old Nascars that would be willing to let the old drivers drive them. Maybe Penzoil could sponsor this. I saw a video where Bill Rhine, I think that’s his name said drivers could use their car anytime they wanted to. Grassrootsracing, a KZreadr has a Kyle Petty Mellow car and a Harry Gant Skole Bandit car. He might be willing to work with you. See how many drivers you can get and do a show on each and then have a track day at a track with all of the drivers there. I think people would pay to see that.

Like most I suppose , I found you by accident and have enjoyed everyone you've done. I raced local dirt tracks for a few years, built our own semi late models. Some of the late model racers had cars built by Bobby Allison and a few other NASCAR drivers , watching this one was awesome. I saw NASCAR race on dirt at Richmond and watching this brought back memories. Don't be concerned about perfect videos, I can take myself back in my memories and relive the sights and sounds. Thanks very much for bringing history back.

It's awesome to see Lake out there again. Back in my younger days I was at the Glen every summer watching him and Dale Sr. And Rusty. I could go on with names. Back in the m8ddle eighties I was watching a new driver that all of them said would be the next hottest driver. Robby Moroso. He tragically lost his life after a win on his way home killed by a drunk driver. Hearing Lakes car in this video without the boom tubes brought back all those memories. Thank you Mitchell you have o e of the best channels on youtube!!

I had the honor to have the name of my company, Deltona Family Medical Center on the side of that car for the 1993 Daytona 500 and then on the car again in the Winston All Star race ... The strangest part was when Purex didn't get on the car for the World 600 and Lake ran 3rd behind the 3 car until a loose nut caused him to pit after which he went back out and chased Earnhardt down on stayed with him . Thank you Lake

Found you by accident. What I like is you’ve grown “organically” - doing what you like to do and what interests you. I like that it is NOT SCRIPTED as far as I know. I like that it seems everyone is being themselves and not controlled by some media “expert”breathing down their necks. Truly, this has been remarkable that all of these big names have taken to you so much. We know you’re disappointed but those things happen in the racing world. I’m so glad that nobody said, “stay tuned! Will Lake get the brakes fixed with only two hours to go?! We will be right back after these messages!”

The car sounds like a dream!! I met Lake Speed in 2003 at a go-kart race, he stopped by the pit to hang out for a few. He is a class act and a true racer. He can hold a pretty wheel, better than most and does not get the credit he deserves on how good he is. I really enjoy all your videos, but the NASCAR videos are my favorite.

I started watching nascar with my dad in 91 I was not old enough to understand anything I was born in 91. But the first race I remember was 95 daytona and sterling marlins 4 orange lumina. That quali run as a child hooked me. I then started watching all Busch truck races and soon sports cars and f1 I couldn't get enough of racing. Your channel has brought much joy to me watching these old cars and shops being brought to life. It's amazing. Thank you and your women for such great content. God bless you both!!

I have waited patiently for a year to see this video on the channel. Congratulations to everyone involved in this effort. Maybe, this will be the start of a longer series of Lake Speed tours again. AND, maybe, some of the others will pull their road race cars our of the back of shop, freshen them up and meet Lake at VIR for a bit of group racing fun. Wallace brothers, Mark Martin, Mike Skinner, Randy LeJoie, et al.
