Larry McReynolds Reunites with King Racing: Inside Kenny Bernstein's Former NASCAR Shop!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Before Larry McReynolds was the crew chief at Robert Yates Racing he proved his skills leading the team for legendary drag racer Kenny Bernstein's NASCAR team. King Racing originated in South Carolina and moved to THIS building for the 1989 season! 35+ years later the place has not changed very much and Larry has not been back inside since 1991! We go inside with him to hear about how the place worked, stories about working with Ricky Rudd, Brett Bodine, and some funny things that happened back in the day!

Race cars end up in museums and the buildings they came from are often forgotten. I’m glad we are able to digitally document these places for future generations to see. I also feel like there is something special about hearing stories where they happened. What do you think? Stapletonautoworks.com

Well the buildings are an essential part of the story, since obviously without a shop, it becomes much more difficult to do everything to get the cars together in order to get those cars to the track.

I enjoy those interviews with those buildings current owners also, and how they come about acquiring those. I think that's just as cool. Again why you're one of my favorite channels.

The last time I spoke to Larry was in the Yates Racing pits in Charlotte May 2003, I have pictures of me my wife and the Yates crew in the pit before the start of the race Robert and Doug were at driver introductions. Larry made my wife's day by putting her one of the show cars and started the engine, I have not seen her so frightened before or since, she almost jumped through the roof from the exhaust noise. I loved working with Ford because it allowed me to work with all the Ford teams.

I worked for Brayton Engineering in Coldwater, Michigan back in the early 90s. We built the Buick Indy V6 engines for King Motorsports. They won the Pole and Indianapolis Motor Speedway track record for the 1992 Indy 500. Kenny did everything right with his Indy Car program as well. Larry talks about the cars that GM provided to the Race teams and for us it was a pair of loaded Buick Roadmaster wagons (with wood grain as well). These days, I am a Plastic Injection Mold designer in West Michigan but I sure enjoyed my time working for Scott and Lee Brayton. And working for team owners like Kenny Bernstein, John Menard and others. Those were some great times.

Yes much to our dismay Roberto wasn't able to control the 900 plus horsepower we gave him and the 55 inches of boost allowed for the Buick. In Guerrero's defense, after a sweltering month of May, the temps that day were well below normal and the traction was poor. Larry Mac is probably one of the hardest hands on working guy I’ve ever been around in the cup garage. I purchased a car from him in 1988 when he was in travelers rest, South Carolina. It turned in to a complicated situation, against my will I shouldn’t have done it, but I trusted his word and respected his situation and he never let me down. Most people when they achieved success, become self centered, conceded, or arrogant and ignore the little guys in the sport, Larry Mac has always stayed true, very respectful and humble, I’ve always admired him and respected him because he’s never forgotten where he’s came from. Class act

I really enjoyed that. I work in Greenville, SC, and live in Hendersonville, NC. I recently ran into Dave Marcis and his sweet wife Helen at a local grocery store. We talked for a little while, and Dave shared numerous stories. One in particular was when he tested Dale Earnhardt's car that Dale won the Daytona 500 in. For an old 60 year old race fan like me, these videos are golden. Thanks again!!!

Larry McReynolds is outstanding. An excellent video of his journey in the early years. Some things I remember like yesterday. Many things he explained I never knew. He is one genuine nice guy to take the time to meet you, and explain everything. Thank you Mitchell and Logan for putting together this incredible video. I know it takes time and effort, but this was an excellent video. Definitely a Daytona 500 win here.

Thanks for the distraction. You mentioned your grandmother. 5 years ago today. We lost my mom. These videos are awesome. I started watching Nascar when I was a kid. When we only saw. 3 or 4 races a year. It was a thing my father and I shared. Up until he passed. Its funny to this day. Still watching the races. I start to call my father. When something happens in a race

I remember Dale Jarrett taking over the 28 car in 1994 after Irvan’s accident at Michigan. When Irvan came back, Jarrett gave the ride back to him and then Yates created the 88 Quality Care Ford for Jarrett that he is most known for and that he won the 1999 Winston Cup championship in. Pairing DJ with Todd Parrott was a genius move.

I pulled a huge joke on Larry Mac. Being a State Trooper in SC, I got to know several hauler drivers. One of these was the driver of the #28 Havoline hauler. We had stopped on the side of I 85 and were chatting when a vehicle pulled over in front of us.The driver said that’s Larry our crew chief. I said put your hands behind your back like you are hand cuffed. Larry walked up to the passenger said and I rolled down the window and the driver said “I need $1500 dollars or I’m going to jail and the truck will be impounded. Larry was speechless until the driver started laughing. Keep up the great work on these videos.

Very very enjoyed watching this video with the history of Larry Mac back in the 80s. I remember the Quaker State car and seeing it race back then as a kid. It very exciting to learn and see all the history of racing back then. My uncle drove his car up in Agawam Ma when it was Riverside Park. Going back to when King racing, Yates Racing, and even when Larry was at DEI what an amazing history and gentlemen of the sport of racing. Even have friends today that Larry may know in racing. Even today Larry Mac is still an amazing knowledgeable guy with all the changes over the coarse of the years still a stand out of knowledgeable young man. Thank you for the video and the to all who spent time making this history of the sport. Very appreciated, thank you.

WOW!!! As usual you two bring us the BEST stories and history of NASCAR and racing in general. Thankyou so much for that. And being said, here's one for ya's both.... Track down the story of A.M.C. in NASCAR and S.C.C.A. Probably be daunting as a task I'm sure, but if there's any team out there that can do it, it's Stapleton!!! Never doubt your task, never doubt yourselves..... you two are truly nailing it. Again, Cheers from Tillsonburg Ontario Canada(if you get a chance, check out Stompin' Tom Conners... Tillsonburg song). That explains it all. The Carolinas ran shine in the day, we ran/run Tobacco. God Bless, T.

For some of your guests, your careful preparation for the "show" is necessary to keep things rolling smoothly. Larry McReynolds is one of those who has many stories to share and does a nice job of doing so. He seems like a very humble person for all of what he has accomplished in racing and, of course, in broadcasting. You're probably aware that he announced some of Garrett Mitchell's racing events.
