The problem does not lie with the buttons, the problem is the low processing speed of the module.

You’re probably right. But since the buttons are how we interact with the watch that’s what most people will attribute the problem to.

I think the buttons are ok but the speed of the cpu or whater they name the unit is low. So it wont register your pressing while it still execute a previous command. Or it may be the refresh rate of the screen that does not match the processing speed but that would not explain why it does not execute the command with a delay.

Great review Jim! 100% Real and Honest! Thank God ordinary people make tech reviews too, and not only professional KZreadrs and Influencers! Being a G-Shock fan doesn't mean being a sheep who turns a blind eye to such serious issues, no matter how much you like the series!

Hey Jim. It's not just the buttons that's an issue. The lagginess is due to the type of display. Those Casios use a memory in pixel (MIP) display and a MIP display has a slower refresh rate than a standard LCD. That contributes so the slowness. Here is a video of a comparison. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6mEk8lsmqixdZc.html. Due to that issue, I will getting the newest mudman. Keep up the great videos!

Not true. This is a processor issue. Yes MIP has a lower refresh rate. What Jim is showing is that the watch is just flat out not recognizing button presses. My Instinct 2X doesn’t refresh as fast as my Epix, but the CPU is still able to recognizes presses. The Rangeman is not processing every interface.

I like my g shocks to be a stand alone watch. Garmin and Apple Watch have me covered as a smart watch / fitness tracker. That’s why my 9400 rangeman and 9500 mudman are perfect for me. I did have the GBR B1000 and the GWG 2000 but didn’t wear them as much because of the size and height was odd to me. Also I’m happier to knock around my cheaper versions and wear them as I intended too. My favourite g shock I had was the riseman GW 9200 which survived 6 years of brutal abuse. I sold that watch when I first purchased the rangeman but wish I hadn’t.

I was exploring the world of Master of G series and was on the fence to get the original 9400 Rangeman knowing that a new updated version is just around the corner. Pulled the trigger immediately after first reviews came out. At over 10 years since release, 9400 is a classic, an amazing value at less than half the cost of H1000, and most importantly - lightning fast. No lags. I just couldn't get into the new MIP series of Rangeman/Mudman - they look exactly like Pro Trek with a G slapped on them. And the lags are just unacceptable. Not a whole lot of updates and arguably some downgrades even, all at a higher cost. Casio tries to step on Garmin toes but they know their stuff better. Stick to what you know Casio.

Jim, do you think the lag is software or hardware related? Could it be a combination of basic programming (similar to DOS to keep battery consumption low) and grit/grime becoming trapped inside? I truly believe that Casio uses algorithms designed for less battery consumption. Having said all this, I went ahead and purchased the new Rangeman and LOVE it despite its flaws.

  • @JimKinkade

I suspect it’s related to the speed of the processor used in the watch. Since the screen has a low refresh rate maybe they thought they could get away with a slow processor. Just a guess. But anyways I hope you enjoy your Rangeman!

Speaking about the gym, a watch off the wrist a real fitness tracker at the wrist, speaking about any other activity, a fitness tracker off the wrist that Mudman (the old Rangeman or Gravitymaster Helicopter) at the wrist, that's it, problem solved. And sell that new Rangeman, that was a waste of time. Or you can wait forever for a new good update like a stupid and be more and more disappointed after every new update. Buy something that makes you happy Jim, not something that produces the frustration only.

Great video, the conclusion is, if you want a fitness smartwatch, avoid casio. The lag is annoying, screen refresh rate is slow, and the software is not optimized at all. I have the very basic GBD 200, my first watch with MIP display. But very similar with this new rangeman in terms of lag and responsiveness. Compared to older displays with segments and predefined icons and indicators, this new display contains much more pixels, and needs a more advanced processor and graphic capabilities. But if you want more power and fluidity, battery life will suffer, the apple watch battery last one or maybe two days. This new display also have a very slow refresh rate, that's why you must press the button 27 times to reach the value, speed scrolling is not possible. Long press is used on older watches too, and you don't have to wait until the watch realizes what you want. So casio will need to further improve the hardware and software and keep the power consumption at reasonable levels.

Why did you even buy this watch? I love mine and have used Tactix 7 Pro, Instinct 2X extensively and this Rangeman ticks all my needs boxes all the way through. I’ve been watching your videos and even though your videos are well done, I have to say - it seems like you are just creating content for the sake of creating more content. I mean how many times can you bitch about the same watch? Really? If you hate it so much, sell the damn thing. Quit crying about it. I’ve had mine on my wrist everyday since I’ve bought it and it’s stacks up to anything I’ve used before - perfectly simple and yet accurate enough to track all my needs , highly customizable and simple to use. I watched you complain about updating the software and each attempt you made you didn’t even click the right button in the app ……over and over again- your lack of knowledge of how to use the app doesn’t reflect on the quality of the app or the watch it’s called user error. When I got the same update, it went smooth as pie with no problems. Guess I’m done viewing your content. Good luck to you. Oh and by the way , perhaps my Rangeman hasn’t give me any problems- I have soaked it in oil, I haven’t picked at it and disassembled it, I have particularly abused it so I can create content, I just use it - on the fire truck, running farm equipment, loading and unloading or in the Medic. Trail running, gravel cycling and working out. It’s been great. Love this thing - I also had the Rangeman 9400, the M 0:29 Mudmaster GG b100, the GWG 1000 , BITH THE GBD H1000 ( returned) and the GBD H2000 ( also returned) so it’s not like I don’t have the personal experience to compare but THIS Rangeman in my opinion is the best Gshock I’ve owned yet.
