I've always liked this part of the movie a lot, together with "Within you". I always saw Jareth as not an evil character persé. This is Sarah's dreamworld and to be the heroine, she needed a "big bad", an enemy. Jareth gave her exactly what she wanted. The song "within you" explains it pretty well. He has shaped the world to fit her fantasy, he has played the role she wanted him to play, and now he's tired and fed up. Yet he knows that he himself only exists as long as she gives him that power. Which is why he asked her to "Fear him, love him and do as he says". As long as she gives him that power, he can be there, with her, and continue to give her everything she's ever wanted. Just as he has been doing all along.

For those upset about Sarah "leaving" him, remember all the magical characters return to her home (and can return whenever), including Jareth (in owl form). I like to believe that after many visits, Sarah realizes Jareth only did as she asked, and actually taught her a lesson. By making her venture off to find her brother, it was to make her decide on how far she was willing to go for her sibling. The baby being taken by the Goblin King/Jareth, was only done upon Sarah's summoning. And as for this scene, he's probably never been in love/experienced love (considering all the goons in his land), and has no idea how to express it. Also, as a king, he's used to just getting what he wants, and hasn't been corrected. I believe in JarethxSarah :-)

"Just let me rule you, and you can have everything that you want... Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave" I just watched this movie for the first time recently at a theater and seeing Bowie on the big screen, hearing these words over the big sound system, I thought I was going to melt into a puddle. I can't imagine what filming this movie must have been like for Jennifer Connelly. Especially that ballroom fantasy scene, waltzing with Bowie, him staring intensely into her eyes with his amazing, transfixing eyes, good lord. I would have fainted.

+Viviana Smith You should read the Books of Magic to know how even a magical world can turn sour. How fairy queens and kings can do the shittiest things with magic (just like any human would do with words or actions). How you need to struggle in order to survive even if you're surrounded by rainbows and unicorns. And if you have things that keep you attached to the real world (even if it's her "shitty" family, not that shitty because she's obviously a little bratty :P) it's hard to deny it all. Then again, if she knew what love is and if she had enough time to fall in love with the goblin king she would have left everything behind. After all at 15 you don't care about relationships, even Connelly admitted that she was more fascinated by the puppets than by Bowie himself. :P It needs a certain amount of maturity to know what you want.

+vivi_cho This movie is about growing up, it's about crossing that line between childhood and adulthood. In the beginning of the movie you'll notice a copy of Wizard of Oz which this is loosely based on. All of these characters she meets along the way are meant to teach her about real life, for example Hoggle. His treatment of her is erratic and unpredictable, like anyone you might meet out in the real world. When she finally has that last scene with Jareth, and she chooses to leave that "Magical world" It is meant to represent her taking that last step into adulthood, she's growing up. This is also why she gives Toby the toy in the end of the film.

Hell f**king no, screw the formalities or whatever film analyses everyone is discussing, I would have stayed! I'm absolute putty in his hands when he said, "Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave." Also, the ballroom scene. And yes, he is androgynously gorgeous and I love his "bulge." I was 9 years old when this came out, and even as a kid, I was enveloped in the sexual appeal of him at that time. Now that Bowie is gone, I want to dance with him forever as the Goblin Queen. But that's the brilliance of it. In the film's end sequence, Jareth does have "power" over Sarah. He puts all the goblins and sidekicks, that are featured throughout the film, back into place in Sarah's room (They are all visible at the start of the film anyway: as dolls in her room, and pictured on books, on her board games etc), where they've always belonged (and, most importantly, from mutually within the world of Sarah's imagination itself) before Jareth then flies off in owl-form to the moon (He can never truly be a man to a "girl", only a symbolic image, looking in from the edge of her dreams), and the little girl is now left alone to play with her toys: with her actual imagination now being the most prevalent plaything on offer. The bursting bubble is symbolic of a clarity that was always visible, but has now broken and the dreams seep through into the conscious world itself. Sarah is a child that will never grow up, and now doesn't have to. A fantasy coming alive was her eternal wish, and the world of reality and fantasy becomes entirely indivisible now, as the fantasy world has now fully crossed over to the "reality" of Sarah's world, and absorbs it and becomes the dominant visual canvas. Amazing music by Bowie, especially the song during its opening credits. What a film. Haunting.

Anako Thank you for your compliment. My study of this film was massively comprehensive, when it first came out in the mid-late eighties. To understand what's going on, you must first love it, and then study. Films now have that same synchronised, made by the same director feel to them. There's some films I've watched so much that I am now only looking at what's going on in the background of the shots/cinematography. Regards

Jareth is clearly reflected in the crystal that contains her dreams. Even when he first offers her the crystal with her dreams it also had Jareth’s reflection in it. But she made the right choice. Girl power! 👏 That line “You have no power over me” is actually so powerful if you truly mean it.

Jareth is a fantasy, someone she conjures, kind of like young girls invent personalities for celebrities they are fans of and pretend they have love relationships with. He is everything she wants, not a person in and of himself. (It's why she can only see her creatures in the mirror at the end.). It is hard to give up such a beautiful dream, but if a girl does not, it blocks her from having a real life relationship with a real guy. I was never a fan of his music, but Bowie was stunning, mesmerizing, and gorgeous in this movie.

+Lin Hiril Exactly right! Finally, someone *gets* it. Now, if she had ended up being able to call upon him as she did her "friends" at the end of the movie, that might have been psychologically healthier than his simply being cast out to fly away sadly into the night. But only in a Mary Sue dream could he remain her master. Archetypes and dream figures make for great art, but they are terrible masters.

One of my favorite movies. My friends and I have talked about this movie so many times over the years and how could it not be a great. One, a Jim Henson production, you just knew that was going to be great. Two, it has David Bowie in it. How could that NOT be GREAT. Three, a very young girl, pretty, talented, perfect for the role; on the cusp of her real life imprinted her feelings throughout the movie. As I read many of the posts below, I gave everyone a thumbs up. The dance was the best scene and then the end. He simply wanted her love him as mush as he loved her. Fabulous. This will always be a classic. It was a classic the moment it was made and we've loved it ever since. We will all wish we could have stayed with the Goblin King. Rest in peace David Bowie for all the wonder that you are. You have always and will always be loved.

Victoria Reel Dear Victoria, it appears we both appreciate Labyrinth in a unique and deep way. I am aware of the "Inside the Labyrinth" special, thank you. It's part of the Labyrinth DVD I have. You and I both seem to realize this was more than a child's movie. It's appeal runs deeper than that. In my 54 years, I've learned Time passes and we have to let loved ones, people we admire go. But the legacy of this film and those who were apart of it's genius.......lives on. Cherie Newlen aka VIVETVITAS ("Live, that ye may Live, our family motto).

VIVETVITAS You are correct Cherie. David Bowie was a man of many talents and it was great to watch him through all his stages. He truly didn't conform to the normal side of life. I think that is what I admired about him the most. He lived his life to the fullest and never regretted any of it, or at least what he could remember. I say that because of an interview he gave, I do not know where the video is of that interview, but when asked about his persona in the 70's, his reply was classic, "I don't really remember much of the 70's." So, he did what he wanted and stayed true to himself, whomever that was at the time. I remember when he and Iman got together and I thought of what a perfect match they made. And, you are not that much older than me at 50 and I can still feel like a teenager when I think of David Bowie in the 80's. He once again revived himself and it always paid off for him in the long run. It was nice chatting with you Cherie. I know there are more Bowie fans than even he never knew just how many people adored him. He will always be remembered for there is far too mush footage of him that we can sit back and enjoy. He will live on through his fans.

What Jared is talking about is mutual respect- he'll be happy to be her "slave", as long as she listens to him and does as he says. None is above the other. First off, I have always been a huge fan of Jim Henson and when I heard that he was making a movie I knew that it would be a spectacular achievement. Then, as more and more information about the movie was released I became engrossed. I had to see it. I knew David Bowie would be in it and a young unknown teenage girl who fit the bill and preformed remarkably well. When I saw the movie I fell in love with it. The work that went into it was phenomenal. All the characters, puppetry, were a true work of art. They had everything right for this movie. It will always be a classic. David Bowie made the soundtrack for the movie and it was just as remarkable. To see him in this movie this way and laying the soundtrack for it showed the world once and for all that if you doubted him before, you no longer could. My favorite parts in the movie, The Dance, where Sarah realizes that Jareth is biding time so she will stay with him and she walks away, he knew he was losing her, for Jareth did love Sarah. The second, was the end scene where he begged her to stay with him and with her final words he was heartbroken and turned back into the white owl with great loss. I will always love this movie for it's historical reasons that was all from the mind of Jim Henson. A very wonderful mix of brilliance. I cannot think of a better movie for what was put into it by so many people to see it come to fruition.

When you think about the movie as a whole and the role of Jareth, he is the machination of all her dreams and desires put into one person. If we look at Jareth as a concept of Sarah's mind then as a real person we see that Jareth is indeed fighting for his survival in Sarah's mind and heart. However revealing himself and his world to her, playing into her fantasy of adventure by taking her brother proves his undoing by obeying her. He can never really hurt her, he can only intimidate and scare her because he's afraid of being rejected as shes growing up. Without Sarah's belief in magic and childish fantasies he'll lose power and possibly fall from existence in her mind. The final gambit proves that all he can do is give her dreams and help her indulge in her desires and fantasy but he can't give her anything else thats real. When Sarah finally takes control away from him he falls from power in her mind and heart and is reduced to nothing but a fleeting fantasy as the owl. He still exists as apart of her but not as powerful as he used to be. Sarah learns that she can grow up but still reminisce about her childish fantasies without letting them take over her mind and will. In a sense this males me pity the character of Jareth rather then revile him as a villain. Jareth knows he can't win against the responsibilities of reality so the final gambit of drawing her into his world is the last attempt for survival and power over her heart which sadly fails in the end as Sarah realizes she needs to grow up.

I love the costume design here, Jareth is humbled, in tattered cloth, he looks as if beaten and poor, or like someone who had been waiting for a thousand years, and very tired. Sarah is in power here, while the once frightening goblin king appears as nothing more than a ghost, an elegant one though.
