My interpretation of this scene is that Sarah confronts for the last time her immaturity (her crush for the fairytale prince charming and all other childish fantasies) and embraces responsibility (for her baby step-brother as an older sister in the real world) and eventually turns from a girl into a young woman, nevertheless keeping a little piece of her dreams, as it is seen in the very last scene.

this is about setting boundaries. the way he talks to her is manipulative. he is an abuser. and sarah realizes as she says these words "you have no power over me." jareth can no longer control her because she doesn't fear him or trust him. she is disillusioned.

You're completely missing the point of the film. He's not a real person, he's the personification of her attachment to her childhood and possessions and refusal to grow up and take on responsibility. Her room is full of teddies and toys that appear in this labyrinth, none of this actually happened, she was all along at home with the baby using her imagination and role-playing while playing with her brother. In this final confrontation she comes to the realisation that her brother is more important than all her toys and costumes, she leaves that part of childhood behind.

This is a pretty Biblical interpretation, some won't agree. But this scene reminds me of the temptation of Satan in our lives. The way he twists the truth, making us think that we can trust him and that he wants the best for us. We are fooled to think the things of this world are really what we desire and will lead to good things... Lust, greed, pride... "Look what I'm offering you: your dreams". But in reality these are never what they truly are, and they lead to our destruction. Like Jesus' temptation in the desert, Jareth's words mirror Luke 4:5-8: "Just let me rule you, and you can have everything that you want". But yet, in Christ, it is our firm truth that "you have no power over me". Anyway those are just my thoughts! Hope you're all having a great day :)

Doesn't have to be Biblical. The Bible has a lot of archetypes in it (which is why so many people connect to it). And battle versus evil and oneself are archetypical, which is why this movie is appealing.

in a manner of speaking, Jareth is the devil. He’s offering Sarah everything she could ever want, but she’s smart enough to know that there’s a catch: betraying her friends and family and becoming his slave for all eternity.

That’s how the narcissist works 💯 I’ve never related to this scene as much as I do now as an adult fleeing a true narcissist’s abuse. After the last insanely nonsensical interaction Just like this, I started packing up boxes and moved out in two weeks. If someone takes over your entire life and tries to sell it back to you AND insists that you owe them and must “respect” them and appreciate them whist they harass and gaslight and continue to limit what you are allowed to think and do, just RUN. Take your remaining sanity and whatever remnants of dignity you have left and just RUN.
