Disturbing Parts Of Labyrinth That Everyone Just Ignores

Ойын-сауық

Remember the 1986 musical fantasy film Labyrinth? That's the one where music legend David Bowie plays a goblin king and a young Jennifer Connelly portrays a teenager who journeys through a mystical labyrinth in search of her lost baby brother.
The movie didn’t do well at the box office and with critics at the time, but over the years it has gained a large cult following and has since been reevaluated by critics and fans alike. But before we start getting over-excited about this cult classic, it's time to look at the disturbing parts of Labyrinth that everyone just ignores.

Also I watched 1980s Diane Keaton movie "Baby Boom" it actually gets decent reviews from people, but by goodness it's a terrible movie. The way she treats the kid, the way she acquires the kid, the way she makes money from apple sauce (nothing exactley wrong with this but it's just so stupid that she makes a living from "apple sauce") I think modern audience would find this movie questionable today.

I would argue that this movie is so enduring exactly because of the things you pointed out. This is Sarah’s coming of age story. She evolves from a selfish person into a good person ready for adulthood without losing her sense of wonder and ability to enjoy fantasy. She stands up to Jareth even though he is a powerful, attractive older man, and in the end, she no longer allows herself to be manipulated by him.

the film is about Apollo/Hermes and Diane/Aphrodita, the gods of the gnostics - see Revelation 9:11 the idea is that Hermes and Aphrodite, the masculine and the feminine principles, have been separated at the hand of the Demiurge - see Tarot XV when Hermes and Aphrodite reunite, the Baphomet is created. the Transhuman, who will ascend to heavens and free itself from the tyranny of the Demiurge. the Demiurge is the Deceiver. the Eye in the sky. the god who ate his babies. master of time. the reaper. so yeah, you could say this film is about a young girl finding independence, rofl. the light bearer released from the bottomless pit - see Statue of Liberty

According to the filmmakers in the making-of book, which I think every fan needs to get, it's actually about a teen girl's sexual awakening, and that's why there are so many sly phallic images in the movie. Since it's a topic that's so controversial (we can talk about boys starting to get sex drives, but shame if it's a girl...), it was framed as a coming-of-age-and-finding-herself sort of movie.

I dunno man, I watched this movie for the first time when I was a kid and it never gave me any nightmares or anything. It’s got that creepy Brian Froud/Brian Henson puppet aesthetic, sure - but it’s relatively tame. Also, Jareth’s age is pretty much irrelevant since he’s a magical being; whatever his actual age is, it’s not represented by his appearance and there’s probably no one else that exists in the Labyrinth universe that would be age appropriate for him to pursue so his choices are pretty limited anyway. The romance between him and Sarah always struck me as more symbolic of him as the antagonist seducing her away from completing her quest to save Toby - at no point is he trying to kidnap Sarah or take her to the castle, he wants her to “forget about the baby” and “go back to her room to play with her toys and costumes”. “Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave” to me is just him pleading with her to give up and in exchange he’ll grant her wishes, while also implying that his power is only effective when he is feared or worshipped (remember at the end when he’s defeated by Sarah telling him he has no power over her?). This is a fairly common fantasy trope where a supernatural being’s power is dictated by the protagonists’ belief in/acceptance of that power (e.g. in Peter Pan fairies die when someone says they don’t believe in fairies, in Neverending Story the world is disintegrating due to children not believing etc.). Jareth can only exert his power over Sarah and Toby while Sarah continues to believe in it; once she realises he’s actually kind of a sad and lonely child thief, he loses his power. The fact that Jareth intends to turn Toby into a goblin probably means that the other goblins were once children as well who he stole and transformed under similar circumstances. This would explain why he is the goblin King and not actually a goblin himself; because he just steals kids and turns them into his captive servants so he can live like a self-appointed King in his labyrinth. Presumably the guy is pretty lonely and bored being an ageless supernatural being, so he likely took up the hobby of stealing children and turning them into goblins to keep himself company. Why children? Probably because they’re easily manipulated and easy to control - an older person like Sarah has far more potential for seeing through his bs and trying to escape or defeat him (which she inevitably does), hence why he went to great lengths to deter her and make her forget about finding Toby.

Talk about not knowing what you're talking about. Just for starters, she wasn't 16. She wasn't even 16 at the time the film was released; she was 15. She was 14 when it was filmed. I remember in an interview she talked about being 14, nervous because it was a first movie, didn't even know who David Bowie was, but he was really nice to her and made her feel better. The movie was told from the perspective of a girl who was at that awkward age where we're too old for dolls but still not quite an adult. Of course some random guy's not going to understand that. And the movie was a fantasy story, so let's not get all weird because it doesn't fit into someone's idea of reality.

The generally agreed upon fan theory is that Jareth is one of the Fey/ a giant faerie without wings famous in celtic folklore (which makes sense when you consider the concept designer for Labyrinth is Brian Froud when you are familiar with his artwork covering faerie realms and mythical creatures). One of the disturbing things about the Fey is that it is said they took a fancy to young women. The peach is like faerie fruit so he could stake a claim to her

That's the point. The world of the labyrinth is twisted and weird, and that's why Sarah experiences growth for having made it through without being seduced by a strange dream world. Not only did she avoid losing her mind in a world that made no sense, she stood her moral ground against a beautiful, seductive and wholly intimidating king. She saved her brother because she was strong.

Jareth is supposed to be a cautionary tale. He’s like the sexual temptations a developing girl like Sarah would have. He’s supposed to be attractive but menacing, wanting young Sarah all to himself before she knows better. But she does know better, which is why “You have no power over me” is such an important line. More girls need to learn to say that to men trying to control them. If you still think Jareth is so romantic and think Sarah should have stayed with him, you missed the coming of age point Jim Henson wanted to make.

I hate when people try to dissect this movie to find some devious and menacing undertones. Jareth is in all likelihood a member of the Fey which is why he can shape shift. It’s unlikely that the human form is even his true form; more likely it’s a glamour. Faeries\Fey are notorious throughout folktales to snatch away children often replacing them with a changling or goblin. They are also often found luring away attractive young women or even men into their world, even having offspring with them. Brian Froud, the man who did all the character design has made several books about good/bad faeries from folklore all over the world. The themes in the movie are a retelling of classic ones. As for the development of Sarah’s character it’s about her coming of age; her transition from a spoiled and selfish child, into a more confident and caring young woman. Jareth not only represents her child like fantasies (I.e. the stronger intimidating figure she must fight and defeat), but also the advent of her sexuality. This is why he appears as an attractive older man. At different points in the movie she seems to respond to him with fear, yes, but also attraction. In the ballroom scene she is actively searching for him. And when she sees him she does not respond with revulsion or fear. Just check out the look on her face. She was a moment away from kissing him before she turns and runs away, signifying that while she is finally able to acknowledges the feelings she is experiencing, she isn’t ready to move forward, particularly with someone who desires control over her.

The movie is from the perspective of a young teenage girl coming of age. Bowie was an ideal pick because he was a pop star in real life. There are even pop star magazines in the movie in Sarah's room. You're trying to make it out to be some romance film when it wasn't. People have understood this ever since the movie came out. The idea was that it wasn't so much Jareth that was the villain, it was her teenage perspectives that Jareth personified. The idea was her finally understanding that Jareth (the image and likeness of a popstar) had no power over her. You could replace Bowie with Justin Beiber if you'd like (though not many musicians have anywhere near the same level of acting ability as Bowie did) and you can find the same story. The age of the pop star is irrelevant as is generally reflected in the real world as well; teenage idolization isn't barred by age and is driven by dramatization and pure fantasy.

When I was a kid and watched this in 1990, we didn’t think anything of the “disturbing” scenes because we didn’t think that way. It was a fun movie. Even the the Wizard of Oz had the witch “drug” Dorothy. Didn’t think anything of that then either. It’s fine. I grew up loving this movie and my daughter loved it too. This is going way too deep. It was a fun movie beloved by many. A true cult classic. For a good reason 🎉❤

The guy watching this is getting a bit too literal it's a movie of innocent metaphors and symbolism. Even Jareth is no doubt a representation of who she would like him to be, he probably was a strange looking creature but morphed into something she would find more appealing. It's like another movie Company of Wolves it's mostly about adolescence and growing up and becoming a teenager then realising all guys aren't princes in shining armour, they can be devious and manipulative. Either way it's an endearing story that countless people fell in love with growing up in the 80s. When you are children you don't look for hidden meanings, that's what adults do lol.

But I disagree that all the symbols and metaphors are innocent - a lot of them were definitely suggestive, and some of them were disturbing to some degree. The theme of both films was about a teenage girl leaving behind her childhood and going forth into womanhood, which includes discovering her budding sexuality.

I'd probably say The Company Of Wolves was more dark and sinister. Following the Red Riding Hood narrative it's full of sexual connotations and suggestion. I watched Company of Wolves as a kid and loved the imagery although I didn't quite understand what it was all about. It's a sad discovery of innocence being lost and becoming no longer a girl who believes in fairytales and fables, although some still do lol.

The whole thing is in Sarah's mind, it's the book she's reading at the start, and all the characters are toys in her room. The whole point of the entire movie is Sarah's realisation that she's not so hard done by and her baby brother and stepmum aren't her enemies. She lets go of her childish and selfish ways, but still acknowledges that these are aspects she will always have/occasionally need. And don't knock bowie, I've loved him longer than memory allows (mainly because of this film)

My fan theory: Babies get wished away to the goblins, abandoned by those who should have loved and protected them. The goblins take them in, not out of evil, but out of pity. They raise these abandoned humans, and they _can_ become goblins themselves. But once in a while there is a special child chosen by the Goblin King to replace him (or her, if it's a Queen). I believe Jareth is one such child, and he chose Toby to be his successor. That's why Jareth comes off as so cynical of Sarah's 180 for Toby, because he's bitterly recalling how he himself was abandoned to the goblins. He wants Sarah to fail and give up going after Toby because no one came for him. And once he realizes Sarah actually cares for Toby, he becomes jealous and wants to steal that affection for himself. It's why he pursues her, not because he loves her, but because he's still a lost, lonely child inside.

It's a confused, confusing view of power dynamics in sexual relationships. It's dangerous and it doesn't make sense and, in a certain light, it feels like there's more truth in it than you'd like. I remember being a teenager, how threatening love was and how much I wanted it - and, as a boy in the heteronormative wilds of the UK, I didn't even have to worry about being desired, or come to terms with the ways that would both give me power and leave me vulnerable. Jareth's desire feels like something half-remembered and only half-understood, something pieced together by a teenager who's working it out as they go along.

#4 is a huge assumption, I thought that too when I saw the movie in the 80's, but I've watched it so much, that now it seems the garbage collector is just another inhabitant. She was never human. She is also not trying to turn Sarah into a garbage collector, she is just setting up a rig to keep Sarah there, since she was probably ordered by Jareth to keep her there with the promise of a reward, like he did with Hoggle. If Sarah fell for it, she would remain Human, just staying in her room until Jareth came to tell her " time's up" and either claim her or send her back home, and the garbage collector would probably be given some useless, but fancy bauble as a job well done for delaying Sarah.

I think the movie is a metaphor on the inevitability of growing up, as shown at the beginning of the movie she is reciting the book she is reading and not wanting to watch her little brother, while throughout the movie she comes to understand how she needs to be responsible for the sake of others, and still keep her imagination and to not let it take over. I think the ballroom scene is a perfect example of her feelings about growing up, feeling uncomfortable and out of place. While the scene after with the hoarder kinda represents the opposite, with the feeling that you don’t want change, but realizes that it will make her unable to move on from that point of her life. And the goblin king represents the negative aspects of growing up, how you can be childish and lash out at others, like when she wishes her brother away. The goblin king is needlessly mean to others targeting their insecurities. He kind of represents the worst part of becoming mature, and it is lashing out at others for not doing what you say, and at the end the only love him, fear him. It sounds like he is trying to justify what he’s doing through essentially blaming her for wanting to keep her childhood. I feel like he represents apart of her that is the guilt for her actions, as he is constantly blaming her

Wanted to throw in some details. Sarah is absolutely attracted to Jareth, and that's because, like you said, she's a teenager who thinks it's super cool to have a rockstar in love with you. If you look really hard, early on in the film you see a newspaper with a picture of a man who looks like Jareth. In the novel it's more explicitly explained that Sarah's mom is an actress who left them for another man (also an actor) and she idolizes both her mom and the boyfriend for their glamorous lifestyle. The newspaper is of her mom and the boyfriend and their stage acting career I guess. So it's a more obvious link to why Jareth looks the way he does and why he's so much older than she is. Jareth is entirely a creation of Sarah's imagination so he follows the rules that she sets even at the very beginning of the film. Think of a teenage girl writing self insert fanfiction. She says he falls in love with her so he does. It's never supposed to be a real romance so much as a story about Sarah growing up and finding value in herself outside of an imagined romantic relationship. Jareth is also supposed to be this alluring idea of a glamorous future that Sarah dreams about, but in order to have that life, she would have to abandon Toby, like her mom did. She's there for her in passing and to give her gifts (that music box with the fwoofy dress is one) but not to really raise her. The stepmom is more involved but also pushed Sarah to go on dates that she's just not interested in. So both examples of women in her life are focused entirely on the male figures that they're involved with. Which is something teen girls are pressured to also emulate. There's a couple of great videos from a show called "stuff you like" on KZread that goes into more detail, also talks about Labyrinth in the context of the heroes journey if anyone is interested.

I dont think he understood that the whole point was of being stuck in between childhood and maturing. She wants to grow up and stop being treated like a child, yet when placed in adult scenes with themes of lust/temptation (e.g,. The ball scene) she quickly realised she'd taken childhood for granted from wishing to grow up. It's quite literal with coming of age trope.

Ok, but several of your points (peach dream, Jareth taking Toby and whisking Sarah off to the Labyrinth, and the fact that he’s more of a human creature) can be logically explained if we assume Jareth is a fae, like a lot of the fandom believes. 1. NEVER eat fae food, it traps you in their world. (Like it would have done to Sarah had she not remembered Toby) 2. Fae left changelings, so it’s likely that a wish-away child would be replaced with a changeling. 3. Fae tend to rule over creatures, in their mythology they were the ruling class, like how Jareth is the Goblin King. Just, I feel like we can also explain his behavior a little bit, not saying he’s not creepy, just some background for you. I love this movie so much.

A recent Labyrinth comic book series follows exactly that story. The original king of the labyrinth looked like an enormous horned owl. He stole baby Jareth from his parents (an English aristocrat father and a Venetian peasant mother) in the 1700's and then got defeated when his mother came to rescue him. Figuring he'd have a better life as king of a whole reality than he would as a shunned bastard forced to live in poverty, his mother chose to leave him there. At the end of the story it's revealed that his parents are both alive and well as permanent guests in the masquerade ball. If you're not averse to reading comic books, I'd highly recommend it. The movie novelisation also reveals that this is exactly what he wants Toby for.

And all Jareth wants is for her to forget about Toby. But she won't. Her journey through the Labyrinth teaches her about trust and family. And in the end, when she confronts Jareth for the last time, she remembers. *"You have no power over me."* How can anyone miss that? It's a textbook example of a Hero's Journey/Coming of Age.

Yeah, exactly!! I couldn't be the only one to notice!! Besides the fact that you really shouldn't say wrong the single most fanous line of the film you are trying to analyse, "do as I ask" is much less effective and doesn't make a lot of sense in context... As if someone asked someone else to obey an order...

The 80s had a lot of fairy tales with dark themes, but that's what fairy tales are like if you read anything about Hans Christian Anderson. Films I loved as a child were Legend, Willow, The Beast Master, the Never Ending Story(A horse dies) among other things. Sometimes people overanalyze things to fit into whatever biases or issues they have.

Still my favorite movie and if you study lore you see traits of Fae lore. They were said to steal away babies at night then replace them with changlings or humanoid beings that would turn into wood right after providing the parent or someone even noticed the change. It's dark but it's nowhere near as dark as the The Dark Crystal another kids movie or say Legend.

I mean ignoring the fact that if you watch the movie and pay attention to Sarah's bedroom, it actually appears as though this is all occurring in Sarah's mind - like the whole plot of the movie is actually a dream of hers. Basically all the creatures she has toys of, she has a labyrinth set in her bedroom, the plot is from the book she's reading, the ballroom scene is based off her ballroom statue and the dog Ambrosious(not sure how to spell it) is her dog Merlin. I always got the impression the whole plot was actually her working out her own issues of feeling unwanted and abandoned and resenting her little brother within her dreams.

Labyrinth has always been something of a dark fantasy. Having messed up plot elements is part of what makes it a great story. That doesn't mean anyone ignored these elements. What kind of bland utterly inoffensive stories do you want people to write? Cause whatever they are, probably no one would watch them.

The romance part is more like a manipulation tactic from Jareth, is because Sarah likes romantic books, as seen in the beginning. Jareth is not evil, he just shows her what her desires are, a mix of intrigue and confusion.

One of my favorite films -- I saw it in the theater when it was released. It's meant to be visually interesting and there are a lot of images or lines children won't understand until they're older or adults, even. The film is about growing up and learning to make decisions... learning what is important and knowing when to let go of what isn't. The Goblin King is a manipulative and narcissistic personality type -- he's supposed to be attractive in many ways and he's meant to be a warning. The world is a fascinating place, but it can also be very dangerous. Think before you act and you'll get where you want to go faster if you learn to ask the right questions. ;)

1- "Humanoid" specifically applies to most of those goblins. 2- It's pretty clearly spelled out that all of those goblins are children Jareth stole and turned into goblins over the years. The question is: Did he always "fall in love" and manipulate the people who sacrificed the children later turned into goblins? Seems to be the implication.

In my view, the movie has a spiritual theme if you look deeper. Jareth is in love with Sarah? No, that's just a trap of the Devil. All that he offers her are just pure illusion, just like when Devil tries to tempt a human being. In the end, Sarah's courage and her sincere love for her baby brother helps her stand up to the Devil. The important sentence was "You have no power over me!" Remember that the Bible said, resist the devil and he will flee from you. And it makes sense that when the whole thing was over, Sarah is no longer being selfish toward her baby brother. She gives him her favorite toy. The owl (Jareth) in the last scene flies away into the night (to tempt more people maybe). Anyway, this is just my view.

You really can overinterpret something if you really want to. As an adult I noticed other and more important things about the story. First: Sarah has created a fantasy world in her mind wich she uses as an escape when she gets stressed out. No wonder if you look at her parents. Although I'm not quite sure if her mother really IS her mother. Second: All the goblins you see could be children. The goblin king kidnaps and turnes children into goblins. Third: The goblin king himself is nothing but a big spoiled child. On the other hand he is not really a "person", but a dream-ish romantic symbol of Sarah's fantasy that helps her escaping reality. Bowie's ethereal look made it very plausible that the goblin king is nothing but a magic being. I always enjoyed this movie and I know it since I was about 5 or 6 years old. It never disturbed me (or my children). In kid's eyes it's a story about "be careful what you wish for", friendship, taking care of your siblings and "not taking everything for granted". It's awful how some people overinterpret the meanings of good old things and turn them into something bad.

The Labyrinth is a modern fairytale and Jareth is a supernatural being who just so happens to be played by an adult actor. What I find annoying is how so many people today demonize films, music and art from the past to find something disturbing or make it something that it wasn't.
