    I love how this case starts, Phelps is still depressed after her wife's divorce and when they get to the houses, they show how crude and horrifing Arson cases are going to get, even more from the homicide cases. And from all the colleages you got, Hershel is the most realist colleage from all of them as much as Mal is.

    When I played this level just recently, I responded to a street crime on the way to the crime scene. Biggs was a deadeye shot who put down three active shooters without a second thought. Then a few minutes later in the car he says "I never fired my weapon in the line of duty..." Barely 10 minutes before, he shot and killed three men!

    I can't condone what Phelps had done to his family. I'm same as Mal (10:05). I dont feel sorry for him as much as you gave him. I know I may get hounded for this but it is a brutally honest opinion from me. I mean, Phelps cheating for a woman who was formerly from an enemy country was in fact a more serious issue, even worse then the LAPD Vice scandal from a public point of view. If Phelps was really seeking atonement for the Sugar Loaf situation and the cheating by exposing the corrupt from within, that I respect.

    @@COZCATL True, sometimes Liars can be true culprits. Besides, Ryan gave the coils to Varley because of Ryan's excuse of using them for camping. I initially thought Varley, but that statement sealed Ryan's fate. That coil was the key evidence of locking Ryan in the cells due to the arson.

  • @melaniel.4269

    @melaniel.4269

    Actually, we the players know that neither Varley nor Ryan are the killers. In the opening cutscene you see the actual perpetrator. Not only does he drive a different car, you can easily tell that it is somebody else (different hair, body shape, clothes and all that) The only reason why charging Varley is considered a fail, is that the McKelty hates anarchists and thus wants to see Ryan behind bars just for that reason alone.

  • @melaniel.4269

    @melaniel.4269

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Jonathan Stone Because it didn't matter to them. Not only was the LAPD corrupt, but as they say in the beginning: Arson is the dead end job where you half ass your way through. And in general, as long as you present somebody as the perpetrator, that's fine, especially if he fits the agenda, like the guy being an anarchist. This was already perfectly shown in the Homicide Desk: You charge Femway and everybody is happy that you put somebody behind bars. That is what matters. That he wasn't the murderer came out and he was quietly released, nobody cared. Same in the Golden Butterfly: You put Eli Rooney behind bars, get a pat on the back for putting that pedophile out of public, even though the whole case was rather wonky to begin with. Most of the cases in the game are based on real cases and the whole story of Phelps being framed and it being a cover up for a prostitution scandal and how corrupt the cops are is based on the real life prostitution and corruption scandals of the LAPD in the late 40's. They all were corrupt and didn't give a fuck who went behind bars or didn't. The rate of innocent people ending up in prison was quite high back then.

    I felt like Cole was phony in some ways. Like he's noble, but kind of overdoes it to make up for his time during the war. During the flashback scene where he gets awarded with a silver star, he felt like he didn't deserve it, but accepted it anyway. When Cole met Johnny Stamponato and Mickey Cohen, Johnny mentioned that he heard of Phelps and his silver star. All Phelps said was, "something like that..."Roy (and to a lesser extent, Rusty) noticed the way Phelps acted during cases, even saying "i don't have the same voices in my head as you, Cole" when talking about his interaction with a person of interest. Jack Kelso is pretty much the real version of what people thought Cole was during and after the war. The two are very similar (which is a theme brought up early in the game), but the flashbacks show how they're different.

    I played my first time without any KZread guides, and after listening to the testimonies of both Ryan and Varley, Varley definitely seemed like the most guilty of them two, although none of them really convinced me. However, Varley did lie about being in one of the houses where the fires started, he's got the anarchist propaganda, and Ryan just doesn't seem like the guy to me. He's angry at one of the heater companies, so the most logic thing is that if he wanted revenge, he would do something to the heater companies, instead of innocent people right? I got two stars by charging Varley, and four stars by charging Ryan. I don't care what the game says, my gut still tells me that Ryan didn't do it

  • @tomato2517

    Ryan had a personal motive against the company, a political motive, the training to do it and mosquito coils. The coil being his sealed the deal for him, as Varley’s only indictment is that he got kickbacks from suburban. The captain also loves it when the guy you arrest happens to be an anarchist, so if you’re split between the two, that’s an extra reason why to charge him. Also, Varley having an outstanding murder charge means not charging him will still have him face justice. So two birds with one stone in the eye of the police department. We know it’s neither of them at the end of the day, but I like to think Ryan was eventually gonna commit industrial sabotage. He had strong motive, opportunity and the tools to do so. Anyways it makes sense to me why you change him.

    I haven't played through the arson part of the game yet, so here is my theory: - the death of the Saywers is a result of an unfortunate coincidence. - we know Varley admittedly is paid off by Suburban to rig the regulators while the inhabitants of the house are away on their vacation - we also know that Ryan is resentful to Hephaestus (Now InstaHeat) for not only moral but also personal reasons - his family got killed in an avoidable accident for which the company should have been held accountable - Ryan knows how despite it's very dangerous design flaw, InstaHeat is still pouring the 70 model to the market out of mere greed. - Ryan is also familiar with affiliations of Varley - Ryan is disgusted of course but also sees it as an opportunity to finally draw attention to the shady dealings of InstaHeat - He uses the same method to burn down empty houses in order to raise the number of arson cases to finally draw the attention of the authorities - Ryan is also probably making sure that every house he burns is empty - due to his profession, Ryan can hang around houses without raising suspicioun, he can easily open the mail boxes and figure out who are the lucky ones who received correspondence from Gulliver's - since Varley is an inside men, he gets up to date information about the houses he has to burn while Ryan has to work with significantly less reliable intel - from the mail boxes Ryan can see which families were elected to travel, but there was no way for him to learn about the last minute cancellation of the Sawyers, while Varley probably was phoned by Suburban not to do anything, who of course were getting first hand information from the travel agency - Ryan unknowningly rigged the regulators and the Sawyers met their demise... I still charged Varley though.

    The thing about those is... That the war experience changed him. The Sugar Loaf battle to the civilian cave. Phelps couldn't get over that lack of courage thing until Kelso said what he needed to get the detective to see things in different light. Had he been not a former soldier, I bet the LAPD would've pushed for a gas chamber for his 'crime'.

    Ever since I found out Biggs' actor was The Didact in Halo 4, I've been wondering how that game would've ended if Didact had a bowler hat and a .45

    Amazing storyline and detail. Especially for 2009. Rockstar always went above and beyond. Cole was a good man regardless. He cheated yes but he also cared about people.

    Every time I hear Herschel talk I expect him to call Cole 'Smoothskin'. All I hear is his male Ghoul voice from Fallout 4.
